Auspicious Sites: Wellington Chest Hospital at Alexandra Road
- 19 Mar 2013
- Eye of the Fish
- Running from Oriental to Lyall Bays is a faultline which geologists have not yet favoured with a name. A huge boulder of Jurassic sandstone caps this fault like a seal, its extremities reaching from deep beneath Melrose and Newtown to the siltstone below Hataitai; at the surface-level of its northernmost point, a triple-pronged crown emerges along the slopes of Mount Victoria in the form of the Wellington Chest Hospital. This hidden landmark allows surface-dwellers a rare peek at the subterranean dimensions of our day-to-day world. The mountain’s privileged vantage has been recorded since its earliest recorded name: Matai-Rangi, or Place to Watch the Sky.

- The Mt Victoria Hum has been the subject of numerous complaints/comments for the past few days in various media. Capital Times, which as always is up with the play, has the answer. And sadly (not as rumour would have it), there’s nothing nefarious.. It’s from the Singapore Navy frigate Stalwart parked at Queen’s wharf.

Protecting heritage values on Mt Victoria
- 21 Dec 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- It has been a busy year for the Mt Victoria Residents Association. One of our objectives is to protect the heritage value of Mt Victoria. This does not mean that we advocate the return of the outside privy or petition against the renovation of your kitchen or other rooms. But it does mean we try to prevent the look of Mount Victoria being spoiled by a mishmash of new buildings.
