Protecting heritage values on Mt Victoria
- 21 Dec 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- It has been a busy year for the Mt Victoria Residents Association. One of our objectives is to protect the heritage value of Mt Victoria. This does not mean that we advocate the return of the outside privy or petition against the renovation of your kitchen or other rooms. But it does mean we try to prevent the look of Mount Victoria being spoiled by a mishmash of new buildings.

DDT does not deter local community food growers
- 18 May 2011
- Newswire.co.nz
- DECADES of DDT is being leeched from the soil of a former Mt Victoria bowling green to create a community garden safe to eat from. Innermost Gardens members have come up with clever ways of restoring the soil at the old Bandoliers site, in Lawsons Lane, by using planter boxes and innovative thinking. Since beginning the garden last year, a combination of mushrooms and peat has been used to cleanse the soil of DDT, which was used to control grass grub in the bowling green before it was banned in 1989.

Mt Vic Tunnel Survey
- 14 Sep 2010
- Simon 'Swampy' Marsh
- Miramar resident Simon ‘Swampy’ Marsh’s survey of Eastern Suburb resident’s desire for an additional Mount Victoria Tunnel has so far generated a 91% positive response. Simon says many residents took the opportunity to comment. Typically those doing so said; “Too bloody right and sooner than 15 years I hope” and “It’s a no brainer”. Others suggested that the solution to congestion lay with light rail as opposed to more cars.

- MANY Hataitai residents are unhappy with Wellington City Council proposals for the Hataitai bus tunnel. They feel the council is not listening to them, particularly over tunnel safety. In particular Kent Duston of the Mt Victoria Residents Association says he is not happy with out of service buses continuing to use the tunnel. “Any claims that residents are happy with this is a continuing process of council staff incorrectly representing the views of residents,” he says.

- ‘We invite you to come to the Environment Court on Tuesday the 6th of April for the Battle for Manners Mall. The City Is Ours Inc vs WCC asking the Court to quash the declaration made by councillors to revoke the pedestrian status of Manners Mall. Proceedings start at 10.00am at the District Court on the 5th floor. ’
- ‘How much for Pigeon Park and cost overruns on the tiles? And does anyone remember the pohutakawa outside the Michael Fowler Centre that was moved then replaced. The exercise cost over $60,000. ’
- ‘And let us not forget “millions” to rearrange Manners Mall. As someone who walks and buses through the city regularly, I can see little advantage and the mind boggles at the prospect of buses entering and exiting Manners and Willis Streets at the same time, as against an easy turn into Mercer, along Wakefield to Lower Cuba Street….. Bang goes the well established trees in Manners, wide footpaths and verandahs and guess who foots the bill, the ratepayers. ’
