      • The new sound and video installation ‘Hold Still’ opened to much flurry and intrigue on Wednesday evening. The work which is situated in the Film Archive’s Mediagallery space is both poignant and charming; as artist Rachel Shearer does an extraordinary job at showcasing the work of amateur female film-makers during the 1930’s in New Zealand.

    • You’re Soaking It In – 3 June, Film Archive
      • 4 Jun 2009
      • Texture
      • Nineties television’s Philip Alpers voice was comforting, soothing and somewhat disturbing. The various attempts at one-liners and puns were cringe-worthy, but made for a good slice of nostalgia. You’re Soaking it In was a documentary made for TV1 back in 1994 and was a large piece of nostalgia in itself as it traced New Zealand’s TV advertising right back to the un-politically correct days on the 1960s.

        • ‘Thanks! As the writer (and introducer) of the film it was SO much fun to watch the audience rather than the film when certain bits were coming up. BTW, I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't (self-)promote the website nightofthehellhamsters.co’
        • ‘Well that was a lot of fun. Night of the Hell Hamsters was especially funny, though I think this is one horror film that was more difficult for guys to watch. There was one scene where I had to cover my eyes.’

    • Reflections on Film Studies
      • 18 May 2008
      • Salient
      • As many of you will know, the recent proposal to incorporate the film programme into a new school of ‘Visual Culture’ was defiantly routed. With some 108 proposals made to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, there was a clear indication that the proposal made little sense, both administratively and academically. To be frank, it reeked of bureaucratic wankery. (more…)

    • 48 Hours: Furious Film making
      • 13 May 2008
      • Texture
      • This weekend marks the 6th time 48 Hours has been held. What is 48 hours you might ask? Basically, a whole bunch of film makers, both experienced and amateur, organised and chaotic turn up at various locations around New Zealand this Friday night, are given a genre, and maybe some other mysterious factors to include, and are let loose to make a film and hand it in 48 hours later. This year there are more than 600 entries, so the mind boggles as to how many people in total are participating.

      • Registration for this year's 'V' 48 Hours Furious Filmmaking competition closes in only 8 days and organisers are once again looking (somewhat apprehensively) at a record-breaking number of entries. 2007 saw more than 120 teams take part in the Wellington region alone, and this year extra capacity has been made available so no one will get turned away.

    • Film school closure receiving national coverage
      • 23 Mar 2008
      • Salient
      • The proposal to close Victoria’s Film programme to create a Cinema Studies programme is receiving growing national media attention, as two protests and a forum with University management earlier in the month contesting the closure have so far appeared meaningless. The closure of Victoria’s film programme adds to the proposed closure of Canterbury’s Film Studies and American Studies programmes, causing growing alarm for staff, students and the New Zealand Union of Students’ Associations (NZUSA). • Wellywood: good idea, dreadful idea
    • 9 Mar 2010
    • Wellington Scoop
    • It’s a great idea to put a Hollywood-style sign on the Miramar peninsula. But it’s a dreadful idea for the sign to use the cliched “Wellywood” word, which does nothing except show that we are hankering after older and bigger film industries rather than having confidence in our own identity and our own name.
