Wellington City’s art in the public eye.

- Wellington City Council’s Art Collection opens in City Gallery Wellington’s Hancock Gallery. The imposing physical presence of Paratene Matchitt’s iconic artwork Waharoa will be missing from its permanent home at the Central Library for the next few months. It has made the journey across Civic Square to City Gallery Wellington, where its hulking form will stand as the centrepiece of the Gallery’s new exhibition We are here, and there, opening this Saturday, 6 March.

New lease of life for Tutukiwi

- The new Tutukiwi Living Gallery is set to open to the public on Friday 26 February. The hexagonal structure on the corner of Laings Road and Myrtle Street, formerly known as the Tutukiwi Orchid and Fern house, has been renovated to accommodate the gallery which will open with the much-anticipated Shapeshifter exhibition.

- Earlier this week Hongoeka marae in Plimmerton was filled with the sounds of taonga pūoro (Maori musical instruments) – accompanied by the buzzing of sanders and the call of tuis flitting among the flaxes. I was one of twenty Te Papa staff who took part in a three day wānanga on taonga pūoro, tutored by members of Hau Manu.

- Givealittle approached artist Otis Frizzell to incorporate these messages of support into a special artwork to be gifted to the people of Samoa. Limited editions of the work will also be made available with the monies raised going to the Red Cross. Otis will be in Te Papa’s Wellington Foyer on Level 2 working on this very special artwork from Monday 12 to Friday 16 October so come along, have a chat to Otis and see art in progress! Artist’s Poi Reflect on Pain of Parihaka

- On September 27, works by Parihaka artist Ngaahina Hohaia (Ngati Moeahu, Ngati Haupoto) will launch City Gallery Wellington’s new Roderick and Gillian Deane Gallery, dedicated to Māori and Pacific art. Visitors will encounter hundreds of embroidered poi reflecting on interactions between the people of Parihaka and the colonial forces in the late 19th century.

- I had a call yesterday from Wellington's Dominion Post newspaper needing an expert to identify some fish found washed up on the Petone foreshore. Andrew Stewart, Te Papa's fishes collection manager, identified them as porcupine fish.

Southward Car Museum
