    • Songs of Hollow Hill
      • If you are looking for something a little bit different to do this week, then I can highly recommend that you get along to Happy to see Songs of Hollow Hill. Happy is the perfect wintery venue; warm, cozy and intimate and this show is one not to be missed. A combination of deliciously insane gypsy songs and theatre performed by two extremely talented Toi Whakaari grads.

    • Wellingtonians clean-up top Comedy Awards
      • Wellington has emphatically come out with the last laugh at the 2008 New Zealand Comedy Awards. Both of the top prizes went to local Welling-town comedians at the culmination of this year’s comedy festival, held in Auckland’s Sky City Theatre.

    • 48 Hours: Furious Film making
      • This weekend marks the 6th time 48 Hours has been held. What is 48 hours you might ask? Basically, a whole bunch of film makers, both experienced and amateur, organised and chaotic turn up at various locations around New Zealand this Friday night, are given a genre, and maybe some other mysterious factors to include, and are let loose to make a film and hand it in 48 hours later. This year there are more than 600 entries, so the mind boggles as to how many people in total are participating.

    • The Best Cocktail Party In Town
      • It’s the 202nd birthday of the cocktail this coming Wednesday (the 13th) and YOU are invited to the early party. On Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th of May, three of the best cocktail-making institutions in New Zealand are pulling out all the stops to celebrate this very special occasion.  The Matterhorn, Motel bar, and the Hawthorn Lounge will be combining their super-powers to deliver a taste of class to all Wellington cocktail lovers.  Each bar will delve into a sacred tome on the craft of the cocktail, and strive to recreate their classic recipes for your tasting enjoyment.  The Matterhorn will be working from The fine art of mixing drinks (By David Embury, 1948), Motel from The bar-tenders guide (Jerry Thomas, 1887) and the Hawthorn folks will be utilising selected drinks from The Savoy cocktail book (Harry Craddock, 1930).  There will also be an aim to enlighten one and all on the glorious (and at times infamous) history of cocktails. This is shaping up as two stupendous evenings of entertainment, indulgence and (Fun) education.  So round up you homies and homettes for cocktails at one or all three of Welly’s cocktail-forging icons.  You can practice your James Bond or Sarah Jessica Parker for this, so don’t forget to dress to impress! -Darren

    • Human Rights Film Festival 2008
      • Having spent many years working for the Paramount theatre I have been lucky enough to see an overwhelming number of incredible films, but none have affected me more than the films I have been privileged enough to see courtesy of the Human Rights Film Festival. Their programme continues to get stronger with every year, and this year also celebrates the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

    • Vodafone Homegrown 2008 - Wellington Waterfront, 26th of April
      • Blessed by good weather, Vodafone Homegrown had a lot to prove if it was going live up to all the hype surrounding it's innaugural year. And in most areas that promise was fulfilled. 30+ local acts appearing on four stages for over 10 hours, had all the hallmarks of a logistical nightmare in the making. Yet the Wellington waterfront was a good choice for such an undertaking, providing space and scenery to enhance the spectacle on hand.
