- ‘here is another perspective – it’s also lazy comedy. The most wonderful of comics are those that are doing new, fresh and orignal stuff. ’
- ‘Comedy that mocks the perpetrators of domestic violence can be a useful tool to reinforce societal norms, i.e. violence is not OK. Surely it is a good thing for any domestic abusers in the audience to realise their behaviour is not OK? Wouldn’t that help diminish the “problem in this country” we have? Ignoring the problem is not going to make it go away, so shouldn’t we be talking about it? Perhaps you have a list of other forbidden topics so we can avoid comics who mention those too ? It would have been preferable to have a post promoting comedy acts in the festival without the negativity. I’ve enjoyed Josie Long (female comedian!) and Sam Smith so far, and am looking forward to going to more this week. ’
- ‘Phil, the fact that you’re categorising the criticism of Kan as “furore” kinda speaks volumes. Given what Kan’s Adidas “joke” actually entailed, I don’t think much “dissection” is required. Could you point out where “the line” is, which makes comparing rugby fans being late to a game with the systematic deportation and execution of several million people, funny? ’

- ‘Hi Dan, Like the Ironman review. Being a Wellington blog, you should mention that the third act battle scene was created in little ol Miramar ’
- ‘Pretty sad reading grown men praise comic book movies. This is why I don’t respect NZ film critics. ’
- ‘Missing my weekly dose of good cinema reviews courtesy of the demise of Capital Times. Damn, I wish they hadn’t had to close – it was a good paper for Wellington. And a nice vehicle for the impeccable Mr Slevin’s weekly dose of well-reasoned cinephilia. Yes, there is Funerals and Snakes as well – I shall have to search on line from now on. ANd maybe ask a question of you Dan – do you know where the Rialto Architecture Film Festival is going to be showing in Wellington? Seeing as we have no Rialto cinema’s here? And do you have a programme of what’s on, and when? Because their website doesn’t seem to acknowledge Wellington. Only gives me the chance of watching Wellington movies in the cinema in Palmerston North, which is not a chance i want to take…. ’

One thing is for sure: whatever Cool Town was, it’s coming back. For Orientation Week only, Mount Street Bar will be transformed into Cool Town! From Monday 1 to Friday 5 of March the coolest bands in town will appear at Cool Town to perform for free! Gigs start at 5pm, so you can come straight after classes, which is pretty darn sweet.
