- The new sound and video installation ‘Hold Still’ opened to much flurry and intrigue on Wednesday evening. The work which is situated in the Film Archive’s Mediagallery space is both poignant and charming; as artist Rachel Shearer does an extraordinary job at showcasing the work of amateur female film-makers during the 1930’s in New Zealand.

- Nineties television’s Philip Alpers voice was comforting, soothing and somewhat disturbing. The various attempts at one-liners and puns were cringe-worthy, but made for a good slice of nostalgia. You’re Soaking it In was a documentary made for TV1 back in 1994 and was a large piece of nostalgia in itself as it traced New Zealand’s TV advertising right back to the un-politically correct days on the 1960s.

- Even though this winter hasn't been as harsh as Wellington winters of past, keeping warm still should be a number one priority.
Sometimes, this means forgoing cocktails for tim-tams and movies under a soft, comforting quilted blanket (maybe with bunnies on it?), but if you are anything like me usually you can't keep still and are not very good at just relaxing- unless it's a terrible hangover. That's why I'm thinking of taking up knitting so movies, blankets and indulgent biscuits are a little justified. Maybe knitting and its sweet purity will even stop my drinking, either way today I found a new store that may inspire this possible new pastime of mine.

- With Wellington now having its own Paper Bag Princess, there is even less reason to visit Auckland. The second hand clothing store has been hiding down in the corner of Left Bank Arcade for a while now, and rumour on the street is that more and more people are discovering its goodness.

- I've just come back from the 11th heat of the Wellington 48 hours at the Paramount theatre. I've managed to see 5 out of 11 so far so I reckon I am doing pretty well! There are still two more to go, on Tuesday night, and I urge you to go along and check them out, and vote for your favourite.

- This weekend marks the 6th time 48 Hours has been held. What is 48 hours you might ask? Basically, a whole bunch of film makers, both experienced and amateur, organised and chaotic turn up at various locations around New Zealand this Friday night, are given a genre, and maybe some other mysterious factors to include, and are let loose to make a film and hand it in 48 hours later. This year there are more than 600 entries, so the mind boggles as to how many people in total are participating.

- Starting this Saturday, the 3rd of May is Fair Trade Fortnight. Fair Trade Fortnight happens all around the world and it's aim is to promote sustainable and fairtrade to 3rd world producers. We are lucky enough to have a wide range of events happening right here in Wellington over the next two weeks.

- It may not have got him over the line last time, but Lower Hutt mayoral candidate Ray Wallace hopes using the same approach will get his nose ahead in this year’s election.
In what is a two-horse race between himself and Mayor David Ogden, Councilor Wallace has again adopted a “hands-on” approach to promote his visions for the city and to gauge public opinion.
