- ‘Sadly to err is human, but feel so sad we may have lost Happy Feet, I would have liked him to have been left near a colony of penguins, so he could find a mate, but we can learn from our errors cant we? But do we really believe he was on his own, did he really swim in the wrong direction to Peka Peka Beach, or was he caught in a fishing net and put ashore on the nearest beach… I think there is more to it, being found so close to the Capital… thank goodness he was found, and pumped out so to speak, ridding his body of sand, stones, driftwood and what the humans love to ditch in the open… plastics..let us pray he is safe, and we can put our rubbish in the correct places, not the sea or beach, try a waste bin! ’

The global penguin – Part 6. Hitching a ride south
- 19 Aug 2011
- Te Papa's blog
- It’s time to go! After nearly two months in care, a decision has been made on how the emperor penguin will be returned to subantarctic waters. After a satellite tag has been glued to his lower back, he will be placed in a purpose-built crate and loaded on to the NIWA research vessel Tangaroa at its berth in Wellington Harbour, a few kilometres from Wellington Zoo, on 29 August.

The global penguin – Part 1. How a lone emperor ventured into superstardom
- 23 Jun 2011
- Te Papa's blog
- An ordinary Tuesday morning. Logged on to the Te Papa server, downloading emails, waiting for the first caffeine jolt of the day to kick in. And then a Department of Conservation colleague rang “What do you know about identifying large penguins?” This was my introduction to the surreal story of the emperor penguin of Peka Peka Beach – a tale that continues to build media momentum as I type.

- ‘At a Meet the Candidates meeting at Ngaio last week, when this topic was raised it was dismissed by the Mayor and the three Western Ward councillors Foster, Morrison and Coughlan despite a vigorous debate and a pathetic explanation from Cr Coughlan as to why she had changed her vote after the S and P meeting on 5th August to support the Mayor at a full Council meeting on 25th August. ’
- ‘Agree with all of the above comments re consultation and engagement. I believe that the officers should take a significant share of the blame for this as councillors vote on officer recommendation unless they have a significant agenda. The next council must change the paradigm of the relationship with officers and drive the city forward with a new vision. I know I would like to if elected! ’
- ‘As a long time activist in support of the preservation of the blue penquin colony and opposed to attempts to sell off this locality, I am shocked and angered at the action of the Mayor and Councillors re the decision to promote the privatisation of this treasured section of the Southern Coast. The implications are serious and there will need to be a public review of this backward step ’

For sale: a home of the little blue penguins
- 27 Aug 2010

- Consistency must count for something in Mayor Kerry Prendergast’s strategy, but it was conspicuous by its absence in a 24-hour period this week. On Tuesday, she honoured Forest & Bird and their project to save little blue penguins. One day later came her action to remove from city ownership and protection a piece of land that is a home for some of those same little penguins.

Swampy Gets Planted
- 1 Aug 2010
- Simon 'Swampy' Marsh
- Saturday 31st, goodbye to July! However Saturday was all about congratulating the dedicated volunteer Coast Care group that spent three or four hours planting around Te Raekaihau Point. I was invited to help out, so kitted out with spade gloves and gummies I rolled up along with 25 or so others to plant thousands of flax, coprosma and grass. While lattes and breakfasts were being ordered around at Maraenui and Elements these guys were battling rock hard ground and wind chilly enough to freeze the bum off a penguin.
