      • 142 runners and walkers fronted for the Waterfront 5k Series on 26 March. Numbers were boosted by 41 students from Newlands College, testing themselves over 5k. It was fantastic to have them along. Weather conditions were again very good – fine with a light wind. Let’s hope the weather holds for one more week, as next Tuesday it is the final race in this Waterfront Series. We take a break before returning for the next series in August. A big thanks to Dan, Don, Henry and Daniel from Wellington Scottish Athletics Club for the excellent officiating.

        • ‘Ban parking on the side of narrow roads full stop. It creates a hazard, blocks traffic, but then again it comes down to peoples attitudes, you stop and let them in they dont thank you for doing so. Im sick of having to flash my lights and yell “”get out of the way” every time a car is coming in the opposite direction. Parking on narrow road sis not only dangerous but can lead to road rage as well. ’

        • ‘One can only sympathise with J. Coburn’s opening commentary related to the horrific situation in ChCh. However he then goes on criticise the Civil Defence and Local Body organisations and suggests that organisations he is associated are better. If he saw deficiencies of the established arrangements, why didn’t he become a member of them to offer his wisdom and knowledge? Insofar as Newlands is concerned, I would like to know if the “ambulance” which is an old Japanese van is fully certified by the transport authorities as such? Newlands is fortunate to have a great volunteer Fire Brigade who have highly trained personnel and over many years their response to many emergency situations has been and continues to be inspirational. Of course, people in communities have to be resilient and endeavour to look after one another in times of emergency. Probably one of the most appalling aspects of major disasters is the usual criminal element who surface with gusto to steal, plunder from the homes and businesses of citizens. ChCh has not been immune from these low-lifes. Perhaps J.Coburn has a plan for this situation as well. There is an old adage about leading a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. Emergency and disaster situations bring out in humans a whole different behavioural pattern. ’

    • JOTA 2009 - Another fun-filled event.

      • Wellington VHF Group were again privileged to be involved in the annual Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) event, this year in its 52nd iteration. Once again our friends at the Paparangi Scout Group were hosting a JOTA station at their scout hall in Paparangi, on the outskirts of Newlands; we operated using the special callsign ZL2JOTA for the duration of the event. read more

      • Newlands suburban shopping centre is even worse than NaeNae by many standards: tantalising close to Wellington, the shopping centre (shown above) is worse than virtually anywhere else in the region: about 6 shops (Fush and Chups, Dairy, Emergency condom supplies, and off-license), some more closed down, with a large tarmac spin-out pad parking lot, and an architectural value quotient of precisely zero. I'm sure that there are many happy Newlanites / Newlandiers that love it precisely for its unpretensionness: however to me it is hell on earth (but with a nice view from some parts). However: all that has recently changed.

        • ‘weeeelll… not everyone can afford to buy apartments in the city, so even though we wanted to buy we needed to be realistic. and after three years of cuba street we needed some respite. the city is great and all, but there are a great many poseurs obsessed with booze and shoes. PS. your site loads like a dog. ’
        • ‘What ? Me? Venture forth into the suburbs again voluntarily? As Sean Connery once said, “shurely shome mishtake”. I’ll leave that to bigger Fish than me. Bit I’m interested in what you say about architects high fees and leaky houses – said with a wry, lop-sided grin and barbed point I’m sure, to see if I would take the bait. But no, happy to say, the architects I know don’t design leaky houses, and of course their fees are only fair commensurate with their talent….. ’
        • ‘Hmmm – architectural quality in the suburbs? Probably pretty much like city apartments. There are a few bold exterior statements both ways but at the end of the day, it still comes down to practical service areas, living spaces and bedrooms. As most people don’t sit outside admiring the sculptural magnificence of the edifices in which they live, a few extra rooms are in most cases bound to win out against high architects fees and exhorbitantly priced fittings. Besides, recent experience shows that architects were pretty good at designing leakers which didn’t do the profession much good. Note to Maximus: Perhaps your undoubted seek and evaluate skills could lead to an article or two on examples of past and present good quality suburban domestic architecture. There must be some from the past and present. ’

        • ‘Just to reinforce what my fellow contributor said, we’re non-partisan – but we definitely have our own points of view and intend to be clear about that. I don’t identify with or belong to any party – but I have strong opinions and I doubt anyone would want to read a sopping wet blog that sat on the fence. (excluding members of the Labour Party obviously… ) This blog is broadly about keeping an eye on local govt and the goings on in and around Wellington. We will call out stupidity, nonsense and the great things we see regardless of who or what body says it. We also now have multiple contributors and as you have probably gathered, we have our own differing perspectives and this will come through more and more. ’
        • ‘Jolly good, thanks for replying. There’s so few sources for local body politics information, and it’s important to know that the theme is non-partisan. ’
        • ‘Good question! No. Let’s have a look at the quote in question… “The city and the council need good leadership and some decisiveness and some action. We’re the centre of the region, so we should be leading the pack, not following.” This is not a matter of ideology – its just basic leadership. No doubt in the coming months John Morrison, and the other mayoral candidates, will announce their policies. Then we’ll be able to take a proper look at what they are promising, and judge them accordingly. For the time being, I don’t think wanting decisive leadership is a particularly right-wing trait. ’
