      • Last year it was the Bookfair and now it’s the Foodbank’s turn to use fully recyclable bags. Downtown Community Ministry’s Foodbank has started using entirely eco friendly bags to package food parcels and frozen bread.

      • Some boarding houses in Wellington appear to be cashing in on big events in the city by evicting their residents at short notice to make room for out-of-town visitors. Downtown Community Ministry is aware of three instances where tenants have been given less than a day to vacate because their room was to be let to someone else.

      • Wellington summer? No, it’s an appeal to help DCM purchase a new freezer for the FoodBank. Last Friday, the large chest freezer which has served us well for over 15 years finally died. We’re now down to just one freezer and haven’t got enough space to freeze all the food donations that come in.

Pat is nearing 20 years of service at DCM as Treasurer. Her involvement with DCM began way back in 1976 as convenor of the then ICM Refugee Resettlement Committee.

Downtown Community Ministry Outreach worker David Manuel says, “Just from the statistics of April and June 2009 in comparison to last year’s April and June there has been a 33% increase of people using the food bank.”

      • Demand for beds at Wellington’s Night Shelter is exceeding supply as record numbers of people seek emergency accommodation. In May the Shelter saw more than double the occupancy rates from the same time last year and already June look to exceed these numbers.

      • Like the line from the song, Tyler Ennis is getting a haircut and hopefully getting a real job. But this is a haircut with a difference. He plans to stand in lower Cuba Mall and charge passers by $20 to cut off a lock of hair. It all happens Saturday 20th June at midday outside Custom Printed Clothing. All the money raised will go to the Wellington Night Shelter.

      • Downtown Community Ministry needs your books for Wellington’s big annual Book Fair. The Book Fair is held in September at the TSB Arena has a staggering number of books, DVDs, Vinyl records and CDs that are donated each year and then sold to people to reuse and enjoy. Coordinator David Cross says, “It’s a fantastic way of redistributing unused items to people who want them and it raises incredible funding for DCM’s work in the city”. But first Downtown Community Ministry needs to collect the thousands of books and other items needed for the fair. Wheelibins will be placed at churches and community centres throughout the city for people to drop off their books. For a list of these locations please see www.dcm.org.nz

Things like insulation to keep them warmer throughout winter were at the top of the list,” says Community Outreach Worker Kate Bell.

      • Actually the rate increase is closer to 6.5 percent to the residents if you take into account the swimming pool improvements proposed as an option in the DAP (Draft Annual Plan.) The total rate increase including the commercial and residential sector is quoted as 2.8 percent but when the sectors are broken down the commercial is zero and the residential is 6 percent or 6.5 percent depending on the final fix in the DAP.
