      • I've pretty much given up trying to follow the convoluted saga of the Indoor Sports Centre.

        • ‘Thanks for the link, Adam. Some of that editorial echoes my comments, but the Dom being the Dom, it inevitably ended up with a call for "hey, let's fix it by building more roads!" - "Now may be the time to put the second road tunnel through Mt Victoria".’

        • ‘It would indeed be good to see the other entries for the competition - if SKM's design winner was the cheap option, it would be nice to see what some of the other teams had come up with for wherever they designed the projects for. Perhaps you could ask the Council to display the entries on thier website - or let you display them on yours? And also it would be interesting to see what SKM have done for the other site as well - if they have 2 different sites, presumably they have 2 different designs as well. So far, we've only seen Kilburnie. What does the port scheme look like?Yes, it is ridiculous not to have the site near the stadium. Traffic chaos at Kilburnie will ensue without a doubt, not that it will worry the netball mums who will want to drop their little darlings off close to the door. But it is also ridiculous to expect the Port not to try to develop their land in the mean time - so the council will have to pay them to sit still with a dead unused site for the next 10 years. Seems like a waste of everyone's time and money to me.’

      • There's been some debate over on the Architectural Centre blog about whether or not the Freyberg Pool belongs among Wellington's ten best buildings, but for me, there's never been any doubt.

        • ‘I believe that the building is completely out of place. it either needs to be renewed (upgraded) or sorted out in some other way. and it's useless too! Why do we need a swimming pool when we have the beach right next door? And the gym when there's plenty of running and jogging paths around? I think the pool has lost its old 'sports' spirit and no longer serves it's initial purpose. besides, it looks way too bulgy, feels like it's just been dumped there and left for the fate....’
        • ‘I concur on this one. Freyberg all the way. Not only does this building represent a fresh form in general, but it demonstrates an approach to the water not seen by any other building. This to me is numero uno.’
        • ‘and here too - no doubt it is one of the most beautifully sculptural buildings in Wellington - but any dissention would only be over the age... after all, if we are looking for 10 best recent works, then at some 45 years old, its no mere teenager...’

      • As Auckland faffs around about how and where to build a half-decent stadium in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, our acting mayor has jumped in with a classic piece of opportunism. Why not upgrade the capacity of our Stadium instead?

        • ‘oops, Freudioan slip on the prelacement there... ...they demolished the old Wembley in 2003, and despite planning it since 2000, they're still not quite ready to open yet. So would anyone seriously back Auckland, with its crippled road network, to demo Eden Park, plan a new one, and rebuild by 2011 ? 5 years - piece of cake - but not if they still haven't decided where to put a new one.’
        • ‘Hmmm, the d'Aucklanders should take note and give this serious thought. Given the debacle that has happened over the redevelopment of Wembley stadium in London, where they thought they could just whip the old one down, and quickly bang up a replacement.... some years later, they've found they're 200 million pounds over budget and several years behind schedule.... and still no prelacement stadium. Must have got some cheap, dodgy architect or something.... ;-)’
