The Elite and Under 19 Championships are in Invercargill from 2-5 February 2017, while the Age Group and Under 19 Omnium Championships are in Cambridge 15-19 March 2017. • Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series Wrap: Huntin’ Hunkin Unstoppable
      • Lisa Hunkin continued her domiance of the women’s competitions at the seventh round of the track cycling Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series held at the Wellington Velodrome in Hataitai on Sunday December 11. Hunkin picked up another 12 league points with a great win in the B grade 2 lap Sprinters’ Scratch and second in the 8 lap Scratch. Hunkin, last season’s overall women’s victor is well in front of her nearest rival on points and well poised to take another Champion System winner’s jersey. With her focus on the shorter events, she has been unstoppable in the one-on-one The Lanes Sprint Ace races, and Sunday was no exception, as Hunkin smoothly beat Grace Saywell into second. With Speed League taking a pause until the Summer Series kicks off in January 2017, riders can reflect on an excellent first half of the season. Race official and former Cycling NZ selector, Kirsty Fleming says the standard of racing has been really high. “A real highlight for us is to see new riders coming along and improving really quickly,” says Fleming. “They also get really good support from riders who have raced for a long time which makes for a really positive environment.” As usual, some of the most competitive action has been in the junior grades where Millie Donald has had a ding-dong battle with Alex Baguley for the overall lead in the under 11 girls. She holds a slender four point lead over Baguley who racked up a whopping 20 points during round seven, partly thanks to two wins in the D grade Hare and Hounds and Sprinters’ Scratch. Likewise, Jackson Moyle in the under 13 boys is ahead by only 13 points over Elliot Robertson after the duo exchanged the lead a number of times since the season started at the end of October. Caleb Moyle took advantage of rival Louis Hodgkinson’s absence and jumped into the top position in the under 17 boys with a highly profitable win in the C grade Hare and Hounds. In the Coffee Supreme open men’s grade, Nick Warren maintains a comfortable lead ahead of Matt Disney and Bruce Cook with wins in the 10 lap Scratch and 12 lap Points Race. Cook resumed his The Lanes Sprint Ace battle with Gideon Burke taking this week’s ride off by a bike length and leads the competition by just one point over Burke. Rivet Racing lead the Zeal Commercial Interiors Teams’ Prize by two points from Lone Rangers. • 2016 Rice Mountain Classic Results
      • This years edition of the Rice Mountain Classic was run on Sunday 11 December. First held in 1996 the race honours the contribution to the club by Alan Rice.  The Rice Mountain is without question one of the regions highest prized titles, being raced over extremely demanding courses, it has always found worthy winners. Past winners include Jeremy Vennell, Jeremy Yates, Scott Lyttle, Antosh Kowalewski, Hayden Roulston, Andy Hagan, Dave Rowlands, Wayne Hiscock and Brent Backhouse.  The womens trophy has been won by Serena Sheriden, Tracey Best, Catherine Dunn, Susie Wood (4 time winner) and Nadene Boyle. A Grade A small but quality field of 17 riders started this year’s (A grade) Rice Mountain Classic over a brutal course of 110km with 2500 metres of climbing. It was the same course used in 2014 that saw PNP stalwart Dave Rowlands get the better of rising star and then 16 year old NZ rep Robert Stannard.  Both riders were in the field this year along with some of the best local riders all expecting a tough day at the office. The pace was solid from the start with the majority of the field staying intact up the west side of Kourarau. Tristan Thomas and Matt Webb-Smith slipped away shortly after and were joined by Calvin Standrill, these three worked well together and lead by around 30 secs at the Limeworks hill  turnaround.  The break was reeled in by a Robert Standard surge up a climb on the return trip from Limeworks, the surge resulted in 6 riders going clear for around 5km before 7 riders joined them. The 13 riders stayed together at all the way to the Te Wharau Rd turnaround despite the crosswind and a number of smaller splits. After the turnaround things started to heat up on the climbs back to Kourarau. Robert Stannard turned up the heat and by the time the leaders got to ‘The Wall’ there were just five remaining.  Stannard, Dave Rowlands. Andy Hagen, Liam Sherlock and Anthony Nalder. But not content to wait until the final climb up Admirals Robert Stannard unleashed up ‘The Wall’ and one by one all 4 of his opponents dropped off.  ‘The Wall’ is a brute of a climb that must be 15% gradient for close to 2kms, at the summit Stannard had about a minute on Andy Hagan who was 30 odd seconds in front of Liam Sherlock with Dave Rowland close behind. Not content to sit on this lead Stannard kept pushing all the way to Admirals Hill and kept extending his lead to the finish line for a convincing victory. Behind him the race was in tatters with the next 8 riders all riding solo to the finish. Andy Hagan stayed strong to the end and finished a creditable second some 3 minutes down with Dave Rowland powering through to take third place.  The rest of the field filed through the finish with minutes not seconds between them all pleased to have finished and hopefully with some sense of accomplishment having completed the toughest club race of the season. The legend of the Rice Mountain Classic lives on. B grade 25 riders started in B grade with a good mix of young riders keen to show up the old (wiser) men. The course, weather and wind meant the field stayed together for much of the race as riders saved themselves for the final couple of climbs.  Several brave breaks were attempted by some of the younger riders, but nothing able to stick as the main bunch ensured no one established any significant lead. The undulating hills out and back on Te Wharau Rd and the second last climb up the back side of Te Wharau Rd saw the field finally split up with riders dropping off the peloton at regular intervals and the pace remaining solid. Ten riders started together at the base of the final climb up Admirals Hill.  However, it did not take long for the field to split up with five riders heading off up the road stretching the field out.  Rob Kilvington and several of the younger (lighter) riders battled it out on the upper part of the climb with Rob Kilvington (older, wiser) narrowly winning from Matt Stevens, with Henry Levett a short distance back. C & D Grade The C & D grade riders tackled a shorter less demanding course, but still challenging with ca. 1700 metres of climbing.  Taking line honours on the day was Pete Wilkinson from Philip Sutherland in second and Nigel Mehta-Wilson in third. First woman was Natalie Hardaker, (also 4th overall on the 65 km course) followed by Ione Johnson and Diana Borman in the minor places. • PNP Masters 2 Win North Island Teams Series
      • The final round of the North Island Teams Series was held around Masterton on Sunday. Across the five rounds many PNP members have raced in various teams, including a team entered by PNP in the ever competitive Masters 2 category. Going in to the final race on Sunday Kerrin Allwood was in the leaders jersey by a single point from Gary Anderson from Velo Ronnys Trek. The PNP Masters team was also in the hunt for the team win so there was plenty up for grabs! In the end Gary took the race win, with Kerrin coming across in third, not quite enough to retain the jersey but taking out second overall for the series. There is certainly no shame in being beaten by a former Olympian and Commonwealth gold medallist! In the teams category, top finishes on the day by Kerrin, Graham Hall and Rob Kilvington saw the team collect enough points to take out the team title for the series. Awesome work representing PNP in an incredibly competitive series by the various riders including Kerrin Allwood, Rob Kilvington, Andrew Ivory, John Carran, Mike O’Neil, Trevor Rice, Graeme Hawkins, and Graham Hall.

    • Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series R6: Burke vs Perry in Sprint Ace Thriller!
      • Gideon Burke won a thrilling The Lanes Sprint Ace ride off at the sixth round of the Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series at the Wellington Velodrome on Sunday December 4. Burke was second to Grant Perry in the qualifying event, the A grade 2 Lap Sprinters’ Scratch, in which the first two riders go through to race a one-on-one match sprint for Sprint Ace honours. Perry and Burke guarded each other closely until the final 200m when Perry dropped down the banking and launched his sprint. Burke was right on him though and remained out of the saddle as the raced neck and neck into the finishing straight. Burke was given the victory by less than a tyre’s width and the organisers are considering getting a camera to help capture future tight finishes! Burke now jumps into the men’s overall Sprint Ace lead ahead of Bruce Cook. Lisa Hunkin won the women’s Sprint Ace ride off against an improving Ruby Straugheir to continue her unbeaten run in the competition. In the ding-dong battle for under 13 supremacy, Jackson Moyle racked up 13 points to leap ahead of the absent Thomas Joyce. Millie Donald edged a few points further ahead of Mikayla Perry with wins in the D2 grade Elimination and Sprinters’ Scratch races. Top-Dad Chris Goodger took a win in the C grade Elimination ahead of Ryan Bogardus who bounced back for a class victory in the Sprinters’ Scratch. Meeting closer was the A grade 30 Lap Super Scratch. An early breakaway of Max Uivel and Rinze Shuurmans spent 10 laps ahead of the pack, scooping up the mid-race prime points but were caught with 18 to go. Attacks peppered the second half of the race, whittling down the field to just Mike Thomas, Grant Perry, Rinze Shuurmans and Nick Warren for the closing laps. With Thomas and Perry closely marking Warren it was going to come down to a sprint. Warren chose to lead it out but Thomas came over the top for his best win in the A grade. Warren was second with Perry third and Shuurmans fourth. The win also helped propell Rivet Racing to the top of the Zeal Commercial Interiors teams’ prize ahead of Lone Rangers. • Burkes Cycles Speed League R5: Coburn takes Wheelrace
      • Mark Coburn won an epic Wheelrace final at the fifth round of the Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series held in sunny conditions and light winds. Wheelraces are a mainstay of New Zealand track cycling and are generally held as handicap events over 1-2 kilometres – short enough so anyone can win, long enough to hurt! The A, B and C grades held a qualifying race with the first six riders in each going through to a final. The front markers were allocated an almost three quarter lap lead with riders spread evenly behind all the way back to the scratch riders, Gideon Burke, Grant Perry and Nick Warren. Most riders came together as one group with just over a lap to go. However for the back markers they still had to negotiate their way through to the front. Coburn, a noted sprinter, was always going to be hard to stop and with a handicap of +130m he was well positioned and took a fine win. A grader Matt Sharland who started on +30m got the closest, deftly moving through the field. Gideon Burke and Matt Disney were third and fourth respectively. The other standout event was the B grade Elimination won by Boston Bright after slugging it out with Scott McKendry who had attacked solo early on. Bright took some laps to catch McKendry, and immediately gapped his opponent to record a memorable victory with McKendry in second. Elsewhere, Perran Coppard won the combined D1 and D2 Wheelrace with Thomas Joyce second, Millie Donald third and Jackson Moyle fourth. The points helped Donald take back the under 11 girls lead, and Thomas Joyce went top again in the under 13 boys. Gideon Burke won the Lanes Sprint Ace ride off against Jamie Hodgkinson to go second in the men’s competition while Lisa Hunkin continued her dominance in the women’s. Hunkin is also hot favourite to retain her overall Coffee Supreme women’s title, and score a second Champion System winner’s jersey. Nick Warren leads the men’s after winning the A grade Elimination. • Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series R4: Moyle Edges Into Under 13 Lead
      • Jackson Moyle jumped into the under 13 boys category overall lead yesterday at the fourth round of the Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series. Moyle, a newcomer to Speed League racing this season and riding in the D2 grade, won the new Tempo Race and scored 17 points to edge into the lead over Thomas Joyce. Joyce himself racked up 14 points with second places in the Tempo and Sprinters’ Scratch events. Millie Donald and Mikayla Perry resumed their rivalry in the under 11 girls category, with Perry holding off a chasing pack in the opening D1+D2 3 Lap Handicap while Donald took two third places and a win in the Emma’s Pursuit team race. Donald currently leads overall on 42 points to Perry’s 34. The elder Perry sister Zoe put in fine performances after moving up to C grade, most notably by shooting out of the pack on lap one of the Sprinters’ Scratch and gaining a tidy lead. It was a big ask however, and she was overhauled with half a lap to go with Camden Feint taking the win ahead of superdad Martin Joyce, Josh Turnbull and Glenn Catchpole. In another exciting Sprinters’ Scratch, Chris Taylor won the B grade race although appeared to be tying up in the home straight as Lisa Hunkin closed in with Louis Hodgkinson and Ruby Straugheir just behind. Gideon Burke won the A grade Sprinters’ Scratch in a very tight, shoulder to shoulder finish. Bruce Cook was second, Grant Perry third and Jamie Hodgkinson fourth. Both Hunkin and Cook won their The Lanes Sprint Ace ride-offs for the second week running. Meanwhile, The Lone Rangers moved to the top of the Zeal Commercial Interiors Teams’ Prize. Nick Warren and Hunkin lead the Coffee Supreme overall men’s and women’s tables.

    • Signage is up for A, B & C Mt Vic courses
      • NOTICE TO ALL RIDERS COMPETING IN THE WHITE RIBBON / PNP SERIES RACE THIS SUNDAY ON MT VIC Ash and I finished marking up the A,B and C courses yesterday, so if you have a chance to get out there and ride it before Sunday, let us know if you find the signage easy to follow (or if there are any signs down or missing). Note: there has been a change in the lower part of the course, we are no longer sending A & B down Park Bench, as there’s a tree down on that track. WCC have installed danger tape across the entry to those trails, so obviously don’t ride down them and just continue on straight ahead and then left up to the saddle. Once you cross Alexandra Road to head back to the velodrome, take it SLOW as the track is very rutted out from the heavy rain fall we’ve had. I’m aiming to complete marking up the White Ribbon / D course today, so with luck you can get some time tomorrow to practise on it too. In general though, the tracks are still very wet and slippery, so please take care out there. Cheers, Krissy

    • Second Zeal Commercial Interiors Junior Track Cycling Scholarships Awarded
      • The Zeal Commercial Interiors Track Cycling Scholarships have this year been awarded to George Jackson and Izy Alloway. Zeal were very happy to have received a number of extremely high quality applications, and deliberated for some time over the recipients. Izy Alloway will be racing in the under 19s this season and is targeting the omnium at the National Championships after a successful year of improvement in the under 17s. George Jackson is one of Wellington’s most successful young cyclists having won a number of medals at national level. He has recently been named in the New Zealand team for the Oceania Track Championships in December. This is the second year Zeal have awarded the scholarships to junior track cyclists who are members of PNP. Izy and George will both receive $500 towards funding their career. “We’re proud to support these young cyclists in achieving their goals and look forward to seeing how they get on in the coming year,” said Zeal Director, Aaron Stagg. PNP Track Cycling extend their thanks to Zeal Commercial Interiors for creating this opportunity and congratulate Izy and George.

    • Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series R3: Battle of the Baguleys
      • The battle of the Baguleys heated up yesterday, Sunday 13 November 2016, at the third round of the Burkes Cycles Speed League at Wellington Velodrome. D2 grade youngster Alex Baguley lies just one point behind dad Chris who rides in the C grade. While the overall table gets split into categories when trophies and prizes are allocated, to keep things simple all riders are ranked on the same list throughout the season. Alex Baguley picked up two second places and a third before going on to help her team to a win in the combined D1+D2 grade Emma’s Pursuit. Chris Baguley’s fourth place in the C grade Scratch plus a second in the Sprinters’ Scratch was just enough to maintain a one point lead over his daughter. Meanwhile under 15 rider, Camden Feint, won the three individual races in C grade, racking up an impressive 20 points on the day. Another high scorer was Zoe Perry in the D1 grade who grabbed three wins including the combined Emma’s Pursuit where she had to ride two laps instead of the usual one to match the opposing team. Only B grade’s Rinze Shuurmans scored more points in the round, adding 21 to his overall tally. Shuurmans only lost out to under 15 star Boston Bright in the 8 Lap Scratch, winning all three of his other events. Grant Perry took a dramatic win in the A grade 10 Lap Scratch after breaking away four laps from the finish and only just holding off Mike Thomas and Nick Warren by half a wheel. Warren won the Snowball Race and Bruce Cook the Sprinters’ Scratch. It was also the first round of The Lanes Sprint Ace contest in which the first two riders in the Sprinters’ Scratch qualify for a one-on-one match sprint ride off. Bruce Cook comfortably won the men’s ride off against a tiring Perry, while Lisa Hunkin led out the women’s to win ahead of Grace Saywell. Rivet Racing move into the lead of the Zeal Commercial Interiors Team’s Prize, with Lone Rangers in second and THT in third. • Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series R1: Juniors show how it’s done
      • There was a great buzz at Wellington Velodrome yesterday, Sunday October 30, for the first round of the Burkes Cycles Speed League Spring Series – and not just from the drone that was whizzing around capturing the action. Under 13 Zoe Perry was dominant in the D1 grade, winning the Elimination and Mystery Distance races, while under 15 Boston Bright smashed the C grade 6 Lap Scratch ahead of Dylan Reid (under 17). Both Bright and Reid were bumped up to the B grade for the rest of the meeting, and immediately made an impact with Bright placing well in the Elimination and Mystery Distance. Another under 15, Josh Turnbull picked up where Bright and Reid left off to win the C grade Elimination and Mystery Distance races. 2015 overall champion Max Uivel was back on form winning the B grade Scratch while super vet Chris Taylor took out the Mystery Distance ahead of last season’s Coffee Supreme women’s chmpion Lisa Hunkin. Peter Moore won the B grade Elimination and picked up top four positions in other races too to come out top of the senior/ under 19 leaderboard. Jamie Hodgkinson won his first ever race in the A grade despite some pre-race mumblings about “not having trained enough” and “perhaps riding the B grade races”. He followed wheels expertly, timing his sprint to perfection to inch ahead of under 19 Ollie Wood for victory in the Scratch. Defending men’s champion Nick Warren won the Elimination race and the closing Team Scratch, Bruce Cook sprinted to a fine Mystery Distance win. Footage from the drone along with a GoPro will be used to make a video to promote all the good stuff we do at the Wellington Velodrome, and later, to help with our fundraising for a new surface. It’ll take a bit of time to get the edits done, but initial word is that it looks fantastic! Huge thanks to filmographer Mikel Taylor from NZ Productions for coming to the track yesterday. • All set for fifth season of capital’s premier track racing league
      • Wellington’s track cycling scene continues to flourish, with the fifth season of the weekly Burkes Cycles Speed League promising another summer of record attendance and performances from the region’s quickest cyclists. Kicking off on October 30 at the Wellington Velodrome in Hataitai, every round features up to 20 fast and furious races for five ability-based grades. Riders returning include 16 year-old George Jackson who recently signed with top kiwi outfit Team Skoda Racing. One of many young talents racing Speed League, Jackson has risen through the junior ranks and is now a serious contender for the Coffee Supreme senior men’s prize thanks to his excellent finishing sprint. Hot on his wheels will be another youngster, Liam Cooper, seniors Dan Waluszewski and Pat Crowe-Rishworth, plus defending champion Nick Warren. Last year’s Coffee Supreme women’s champion, Lisa Hunkin will have her work cut out against young riders too, with Bridget Olphert and Ruby Straugheir among her likely rivals. Three time champion Ele Pepperell returns for another crack at the title. In addition to the main men’s and women’s competitions, there are trophies up for grabs for under 11s, 13s, 15s and 17s, as well as the Lanes Bar and Bowling Lounge Sprint Ace and Zeal Commercial Interiors Teams’ Prize. Further support comes from Champion System who provide limited edition jerseys to all the winners. Burkes Cycles Speed League organisers, the PNP Cycling Club, are also beginning a programme of maintenance work to get the Wellington Velodrome resurfaced. “The track is now very well used and a new surface will encourage even more people to use the track’s safe and fun environment to get into and improve their cycling,” says Peter Mitchell, PNP Club Treasurer. www.facebook.com/wellington.velodrome www.twitter.com/welly_velodrome Image credit Emmet Riddle.

    • MTB Spring Series starts with a beauty!
      • The PNP Spring Series got underway this weekend with a fantastic event at Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park. 135 people (32 of which were under 19 years of age – go juniors!) lined up on the start in less than perfect conditions, knowing that the overnight rain wouldn’t have made the tracks any easier to ride. This didn’t slow the front-runners at all though, and some killer times were logged by some of the best around. Tom Bradshaw took out the Open Men’s Grade in a time of 1:38:23 completing the two LONG laps of A Grade. Kim Hurst took out the Open Women’s Grade in a time of 1:31:09 riding the B Grade Course. Awesome work Kim to come back so strong for your first race since your injury. Hamish Paice showed everyone in B Grade how it’s done coming home in a super-impressive time of 1:21:47 to take out the U19 Men. Maxwell Wickens was right there with him though, crossing the line in 1:21:51 – that must have been a great finish! It also marks an excellent start for Wellington College for the shield. Other B Grade winners included: Mansour Youssef Masters 1 Men (30-39) in a time of 1:28:15, Jonathan Brown Masters 2 Men (40-49) in a cracking time of 1:22:50, and Gary Moller Masters 3 Men (50+) in a time of 1:32:10 despite giving everyone else an unplanned minute head-start (thanks Marco) The overall winner for C Grade was Dylan Reid, who rode clear ahead and took out the U17 Men in 1:10:15. Jo Neeson was the first woman home to take out the Sport Women category, in a time of 1:25:49. Other C Grade winners include: Dave Rudge Masters 3 Men (50+) in a time of 1:25:14, Karl Laurence Sport Men in a time of 1:16:14, Matthew McCarty U15 Boys in a time of 1:26:01, and Martine Barnes U19 Women in a time of 1:30:09. 20 young riders tore it up around the D Course, with Hollie Anderson taking out the U15 Girls (D1) in a time of 2:05:58, Ben Mitchell winning the U13 Boys (D2) in a time of 58:36, Benjamin Corlett winning the U11 Boys (D1) in a time of 40:18, and Lara Comeskey winning the U11 Girls (D1) in a time of 51:20. All in all it was a great day out, thanks Bex and everyone else in the sub-committee. Big ups to the course designers, thanks to all the sponsors, marshals and to all the riders for coming along. Also an honourable to mention to Ash, who unfortunately took out the award for best smash of the day. See you next Sunday 9am for the pre-ride at Wainuiomata, or the following Sunday for Round Two. • Wellington Trails Trust
      • Update:  Wellington Trails Trust Launch Function Thursday September 15th  Wellington Trails Trust is launching this week, and while they would love to be able to welcome everyone to their function, they simply don’t have the space. So, contrary to what the PNP weekly newsletter said, it’s invitees only – sorry. The Trust have said that they are keen to run a big biking bash at some point (like a “bikers-ball”) – so watch this space. In the interim go to www.wellingtontrailstrust.co.nz and sign the petition lobbying for continued support for trail development, from the next mayor of Wellington. This is important, as it enables the Trust to let the Council know how popular trail riding and running are in Wellington.

    • PNP Race Report Balfour Pennington Round 3, 10 September 2016
      • The last race of the series challenged the riders with some wet and cold conditions raced over an equally challenging Mangaroa – Wallaceville circuit.   The scratch riders finally had their day over both the long and short courses taking line honours in both races. Thanks to Deidre Johnson, timing and registration assistance and those people who agreed to volunteer. Five laps – 70 km The Break 4 riders were unable to stay away from the chasing hordes over the slightly more challenging course and were bettered by the scratch riders.  Congratulations to Matthew Higgins, Andy Hagan and Dave Weaver (all scratch) who finished in that order with only ten seconds between them.  Fastest time on the day went to Matthew Higgins. Georgina Chadwick was the sole female rider braving the conditions and racing the 5 lap course this week. Three laps – 35 km The three lap race continued to feature a number of younger riders keeping the older riders working for their pride. First place went to Matt Lymbery (scratch), followed by Matthew Rofe (break 1) in second and Luca Vertongen in third. Fastest time went to Matt Lymbery (scratch) followed closely by Paul Morten (scratch) and Matt Coburn (scratch). • PNP Race Report – Balfour Pennington 3 September 2016
      • It was another fine day and good turnout for the second race of the BP series on Saturday. Thanks for all those riders who raced. The last race and prize giving will be next Saturday from the Upper Hutt Cozzie Club. Also, thanks to Deidre Johnson, Kerrin Allwood for the timing and registration assistance and those people who agreed to volunteer. Given the nature of the course on the 3rd, we managed without significant requirements. However, next weekend we will require 7 volunteers to race. Please contact road@pnp.org.nz if you can volunteer next weekend. Two laps – 70 km Some hard work by the limit riders saw them stay away for the entire race and take the first three positions. Congratulations to Tony Clark, Marco Renalli and Andrew Price who finished in that order with approximately a minute between them. Fastest time on the day went to the scratch riders, Ben Barry, followed closely by Steve Bale in second and Matt Sharland in third. Unfortunately, no women raced the 2 lap course this week. BP race 2 results – 2 laps One lap – 35 km The single lap race had a number of younger riders keeping the older members of the field honest again. The break group held off all other groups and took the first three places. First place went to Callum Hancock, followed by Aileen Campbell in second and Luca Vertongen in third. Fastest time went to Matt Lymbery (scratch) followed closely by Louis Hodgkinson and Jamie Hodgkinson (both scratch). First woman across the line was Aileen, followed by Liz Tomlinson (break 2) who was also second last week and Amelia Taylor (break 2). Fastest times for female were also in that order. • PNP Race Report – Balfour Pennington 28 August 2016
      • PNP Race Report – Balfour Pennington 28 August 2016 The first race of the BP series ran successfully on Sunday in fine weather and with a good turnout. Thanks for all those riders who raced with the number of riders making for competitive racing across the grades on the day. Being the first race of the season, there was some serious lung burning during the race. Two laps – 54 km Aaron Anderson of break 3 managed to stay away and take the race from Solomon Powell (break 4) and Richard Henderson (break 3). Fastest time on the day went to Dave Rowlands (scratch) followed closely by Anthony Nalder (scratch) and following review of the photo finish, Andy Hagan (scratch) in third. First women across the line was Emma Cachemaille (break 4), followed by Sam Bowman (break 3), who was also fastest woman on time and Kath Tate (break 4). Good luck to those riders racing in the Perth Grand Fondo next week – Dave Rowlands, Oliver Ferry, Sam Bowman and Kath Tate. race1_54km_results One lap – 27 km The single lap race was competitively contested with plenty of young riders and it is encouraging to see so many younger riders racing and pushing the older riders. Simon Vita (break 2) took the win, being first across the line with a sizable gap to the next riders. He was followed by Juliette Lister (break 2) and Oliver Mears (limit). Fastest time went to Matt Lymbery (scratch) followed closely by Paul Morten and Andrew Ivory (both scratch). First woman across the line was Juliette, followed by Liz Tomlinson (break 2) and Zoe Perry (limit). Fastest times for the single lap women went to Juliette, followed by Liz and Sarah Barclay (break 2). race2_27km_results Please volunteer The club needs assistance from volunteers. • Burkes Cycles Speed League Summer Series R9 – Record turnout for season closer; prizegiving April 2
      • As another season comes to a close, Burkes Cycles Speed League co-organiser Nick Warren gives his thoughts on the year just gone: The final round of the Burkes Cycles Speed League Summer Series track meeting was the perfect end to a season for which I am running out of superlatives. When Speed League was conceived by the PNP Track Committee over four years ago, this is what we wanted it to become. A record 52 riders raced yesterday’s (Sunday March 20) round 9 with at least as many spectators and supporters watching the action, making the average attendance for 2015/16 well over 40 over the 18 race meetings we’ve organsed. One hundred and five different riders have raced at least one Speed League since we kicked off last November. Numbers aside, the quality of the racing has jumped. Former Track Convenor Peter Moore commented a week or two ago how much quicker and harder the grades have become, and this shows right through to the results Wellington riders now achieve when competing at other tracks and at the National Championships. The opening race of each meeting this year has been the D1+D2 4 lap Handicap Scratch, an event which I think represents everything great about track racing. More than a dozen kids under the age of 13, expertly handicapped by Kirsty and Mike, encouraged by parents and riders from other grades, smashing it out over 1.3km – that’s a long way for little legs to go flat out. The atmosphere these kids generate throughout the velodrome is fantastic and sets the scene for the rest of the day. There’s still a ways to go, and we’re indebted to all our sponsors and volunteers who turn out week on week coaching, taking registrations, judging every race, organising teams and events and doing all the boring but necessary admin stuff in the background. If we’re going to keep growing, and maintain this momentum, we’ll need more help so don’t be a stranger. See you at prizegiving on April 2 at the Lanes Bar and Bowling Lounge, Nick.   Burkes Cycles Speed League 2015-16 Category Winners Congratulations to all our winners and to everyone else for making it hard! • Burkes Cycles Speed League Summer Series R8: Crowe-Rishworth goes joint top in Sprint Ace
      • Pat Crowe-Rishworth’s explosive finish earnt him two A grade victories plus maximum points in the Sprint Ace ride-off at the eighth round of the Burkes Cycles Speed League Summer Series on Sunday March 13 at Wellington Velodrome. More commonly known for making attacks early in races, Crowe-Rishworth’s sprinting success means he is joint top of the men’s The Lanes Sprint Ace competition with one round remaining. Comeback kid Aaron Anderson won his first A grade race of the season with a well-executed Elimination Race while Nick Warren retained his lead in the Coffee Supreme overall senior/ under 19 standings with a scattering of minor placings. Matt Disney took three well-timed B grade race wins to earn himself promotion to the A grade while under 15 ace, Freddie Dosser out-rode virtually all of his older rivals in a thrilling C grade Elimination Race. Dosser only lost out to Glenn Catchpole on the final lap after cleverly nudging ahead every previous lap. In the D grades, Thomas Joyce held off the chasers in the opening 4 lap Handicap Scratch while Elliot Robertson, Ben Leslie and Jake Leslie scooped up the honours in the other events. Zoe Perry rode strongly to pick up some minor placings to preserve her under 13 girls overall lead, while younger sister Mikaela Perry continues to lead the under 11 girls. • Burkes Cycles Speed League R7 – Dosser takes over under 15 lead
      • Capitalising on a number of riders being away at the National Championships, Freddie Dosser jumped into the lead in the under 15 boys overall competition at round 7 of the Burkes Cycles Speed League Summer Series. Dosser won two C grade races and was part of the winning Emma’s Pursuit team which helped him amass a tidy 21 points on the day. He now leads Josh Turnbull by seven points with two rounds in the season-long contest remaining. Evergreen Lawrie Farrington nabbed two second places and a third while Stephen Coppard helped himself to the C grade Keirin win. In the D grades, the Leslie brothers continued their winning streaks, Ben picking up wins in the combined 4 lap Handicap Scratch and D1 Keirin. Ben went on to win the Mystery Distance, which turned out to be one of the longest races of the meeting with chief official Mike Meadowcroft refusing to ring the bell lap after lap, despite anguished looks from the riders. Jake Leslie won the D2 Mystery Distance while Elliot Robertson took the Keirin. In the B grade, Matt Disney was on fire yet again, and came shoulder to shoulder with his partner Lisa Hunkin in the 8 lap Scratch. Disney just edged ahead over the line leading many to speculate what their evening dinner conversations might be like. He also won a snap one-lap Mystery Distance ahead of Ruby Straugheir, the starting gun and bell sounding at the same time. Nick Warren stretched out his lead in the overall Coffee Supreme senior/ under 19 men’s standings with A grade Scratch and Mystery Distance wins, plus assisted team mate Grant Perry to victory in the closing event, the Team Scratch. Surprise package Tristan Thomas won the Keirin after leading it out early and recording a split time of 13.16sec over the final 200m. He then faced off against Aaron Anderson in the The Lanes Sprint Ace ride off. Known for his road racing prowess, Thomas got to the front early and wound the pace up, levering his long legs to push a big gear and hold off Anderson. Lisa Hunkin won her eighth women’s The Lanes Sprint Ace and also remains top of the Coffee Supreme women’s overall competition. Next week’s round 8 kicks off at the usual time of 15.45 (here’s the programme) and there’ll be an opportunity for setting times to the Wellington Track Championships beforehand – if you want to take this up, post on thefacebook.com/wellington.velodrome page or email track@pnp.org.nz or talk to Nick on the day. • World Champ Pips Wellington’s George Jackson for Laykold Cup
      • Junior scratch race World Champion Campbell Stewart (Palmerston North) out-sprinted George Jackson (Island Bay) for victory in the Laykold Cup, the capital’s premier track cycling event, held at the Wellington Velodrome in Hataitai on Sunday February 28. Stewart is the latest in a long line of high calibre riders to have won the 88 year old cup, Commonwealth Games medalist Graeme Millar and Olympic medalist Gary Anderson to name but two. The 17 year old won two gold medals at the 2015 Junior World Championships in Kazakhstan, and the under 19 scratch race at the National Championships in Cambridge in February. With such a big name lining up for the 10km Laykold Cup race, the highlight of the day’s racing, tactics were always going to play an important role. The first half of the race was run at a fast but even pace, making it difficult for riders to attack. With nine laps to go Nick Warren (Miramar) jumped out of the pack to gain a 60m lead, however his escape lasted only three laps before Stewart pulled the field back up to him. Going into the final two laps it was all together but on the back straight Dan Waluszewski (Silverstream) made his move. Stewart had him marked though and, with under 17 rider George Jackson tucked on his wheel, sped past him with 200m to go. Jackson tried to come over the top but couldn’t match the speed of Stewart. Waluszewski held on for third. In the women’s event, Sophie-Leigh Bloxham retained the Poneke Plate, winning the 6.5km Scratch race surging ahead on the last lap ahead of Kapiti’s Grace Saywell and Lisa Hunkin (Vogeltown). Bruce Cook (Eastbourne) took out the Masters Stayers’ Cup 8km Scratch with a fine sprint after an attacking race over Jonathan Leonard and Aaron Anderson. In the junior Wheelrace Grand Prix, a 4.5 lap handicapped event mixing under 13s, 15s and 17s, Boston Bright took a fine win with Josh Turnbull in second. Bright and Turnbull had worked well together to overhaul the front markers and stave off the chasers, Louis Hodgkinson the best of the under 17s in fourth behind Dylan Reid.
