- ‘I can’t claim to be a saint, or know of someone who has been saintly to others as of late, but I can say that I have tasted Gingerella and she is gorgeous. Great taste and a perfect bottle, as you say. She sits on my desktop now, watching over me. More interesting and much nicer than that other well know carbonated beverage! ’
- ‘I’ve been ridiculously lucky with the people in my life over the past couple of weeks. My amazing flatmate, the nurses at the hospital (who really deserve the biggest raise in the world), and special people who are just generally making things worthwhile. While there’s not a single person, it’s been really great knowing how many supportive people are out there. ’
- ‘My pal Rachel is a super-busy and important woman, but she still takes time out to volunteer for refugee services, helping families settle into life in NZ. She inspires me that no matter how busy you think you are, you always have time to help others. ’

Statues or Fun?
- 8 Jun 2010
- Sharon Blaikie
- So, $350 000 for a statue that will be passe in a couple of years. One of those statues like the Queen Victoria ones that cities try to fob off on each other. Yet, those events that help to make Wellington a great place to live or visit like the Cuba Street Carnival and the Newtown Fair can't be held for lack of money. How absurd!

Rocky road for Cuba Carni

- ‘John Key – goodness, is that really you? How did you know that I was always the last one picked at sports in high school (except for swimming, where of course I excelled…) – I guess you had the SIS check me out. The J-dawg bit makes me wonder – you don’t come across as quite that ‘urban’. But: have at you Sir – I’ll take thee on. “Is rugby not our iconic sport?” Yes, yes, quite, but I’ll have you know that we have no truck with that word iconic here. Much over-worked phrase. And besides, we’re all on about soccer at the moment. Yes indeed, the entire world, if they have heard of us, know us as the country that is long, green, uninhabited, and where they play rugby with sheep. The truth is more like that we all live in 3 cities, the river is polluted due to all the bloody cows straining their udders out to make cheese and dodgy milk products (literally, working their teats off), the south island is empty apart from a handful of Australian and Japanese snowboarders, we’ve eaten all the sheep, and yes, we play rugby, endlessly. Wouldn’t it be nice, if instead of reinforcing their stereotypes about the rugby (sorry Mike, but it’s true), that we are known for having a damn good Latin dancing party as well? All hail Martin Wilson then, according to Barry. See you there indeed. ’
- ‘[...] and one last thing: there’s a comment on a previous post of ours, that says it comes from John Key. Have we really cracked open the cabinet then? Read on… [...] ’
- ‘For a start Maximus, I’m a huge Wellington Carnival fan, amazing event, many fond memoriesBut has New Zealand been recognised globally for this carnival? Is rugby not our iconic sport? We are known as one of the best rugby nations in the world. Wouldn’t it be prudent to prioritize our resources towards this epic event where the worlds eye would be upon us. Just because you were perhaps the last picked in sports at high school, there is no need to be ignorant towards this huge event that will economically benefit our country. This is no doubt that these incredible individuals have dedicated their lives to represent us and will unite New Zealand. Vote J-dawg. ’

Trust for better celebrations
- 24 Jun 2009
- Capital Times
- CUBA Street Carnival founder Chris Morley-Hall says Wellingtonians can expect a bigger, better carnival and a bigger and better Fringe Festival. It’s Showtime!
- 20 Feb 2009
- Eye of the Fish
- Cuba Carnivale is upon us once more. But will the showers hold off for us today, or is it time to think of the perhaps inevitable: do we need a SambaDome ? Carnival night parade is all about being hot and sweaty and (so it seems, near-naked), along with the inevitable music, rhythm and hypnotic samba music beats. Will the crowd break into spontaneous dance and applause this time, or merely look a

- ‘>You must have a munty great flash on that thing of yours My digital SLR is having trouble focusing on things, even during the day. So I dropped it off at home and used a Canon S3IS compact for the night photos. It's a fairly modest camera and I was surprised to see the shadow from the flash on the side of the Film Archives, right across Taranaki St. ’
- ‘Give me Cuba St carnival over Notting Hill any day. My ears were fair bleeding after a day of that, and the crush and the sweat and the Jamaican “sound-systems” (stacks of speakers half as big as a house) could give your chest such a pounding that you felt like you were getting CPR. But the Welly carnival has some aspects that are starting to take fruit quite nicely. The massed ranks of Batucada in teh drum off were one such – hopefully they’ll have more of the same next time. In Rio, apparently, the different regions of the city support their local dance / samba / drum troop – perhpas we should start that for next time – Kilbirnie vs Thorndon etc. Just a thought…. ’
- ‘>My point is that anyone with a mobility limitation would have found the Carnival a nightmare. Unfortunately, there probably isn’t any way to cater for these people. The Carnival wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t based around Cuba St and Courtenay Pl. You can’t just move it to Waitangi Park or the stadium and get the same vibe. And Cuba St isn’t getting any wider. Which is tough. But it’s ten times as bad at Notting Hill where, at times, it approached crowd densities that were worst than I ever encountered on the Tube at rush hour and had me worrying that it could turn in to a crush situation. Getting back to the Carnival, I thought Courtenay Pl was better for crowd density than Cuba St. The bands in Pigeon Park and outside Burger Fuel were generally pretty good, there were plenty of stilt walking people, and the bus and titty painting was fun. It’d be a better bet for a family than forcing your way through the crowds. Oh, and Max’s Samba Dome looks like it’d be ideal for motor sport or jousting as well as carnival parades. ’

February Cuba St Carnival will extend beyond usual borders
- 10 Dec 2008
- Newswire.co.nz
- THE CUBA ST Carnival is set to expand for its 10th anniversary, with stages reaching down Courtney Pl as far as Blair St and road closures between Victoria St and Cambridge Tce. “The bigger you get, you’ve just got to put in more entertainment,” says organiser Chris Morley-Hall (pictured below). Speaking at the official launch party at Havana Bar, Mr Morley-Hall says he still thinks the heart of the Carnival is Cuba St itself.

Car-nival
- 22 Feb 2007
- WellUrban
- 's going to be huge, of course. This weekend's Cuba St Carnival is set to be the biggest yet, with some unmissable acts on the Main Stage and even the Courtenay Place bars getting in on the act. The open-ended consent means that its future is secure, and you can get there by bus for only $1 (assuming that there are any drivers available). Some of us are getting very excited indeed about the weekend, and with luck even the weather might come to the party.

- ‘Rather conveniently, two major fun events just had to clash schedules. I went to Video Games Live @ TSB Arena, but had to leave halfway thru so I wouldn't miss the Cuba Parade.Better still, my camera chose the perfect moment for a battery coronary - halfway during the Parade. Fully charged for the day as well. Panasonic digicams seem to eat batteries faster than Pacman eats his dots.’
- ‘saw some toga-party-ers last night after leaving mighty-mighty.they were bowling along singing 'scar tissue' by the red hot chilli peppers.my favourite like?"roberta shares this lonely view, and, roberta shares this lonely view"http://redhotcp.tripod.com/calif/scartissue.htm’
- ‘Hayden: no, the bulldozer was in the parade in the carnival prior to the last one (2005) which the bypass monster was in. Maybe that was 2003, 2004, can't remember off hand. The bulldozer was fully sanctioned by carnival organisers and I reckon it was really well-received by the punters - it got heaps of applause, particularly when it entered Cuba St from Ghuznee. For me, the response really validated the cause. I think WCC had much less oversight than it does now, which probably explains why we were allowed to enter the dozer. The monster was a chinese dragon type thing. We did have a 'legal' float in the parade, but the monster was banned. As I said last night it made an appearance anyway! I don't think we were too popular after that...’

- The Cuba Street Carnival has just been granted an open-ended consent to operate as an annual event. It may remain as a biennial event, though, since the organisers prefer to avoid competing with the Arts Festival.
