        • ‘Agree with Dorothy, I was at the meeting too. It’s great that Kowhai Park residents will get a boost in service, it’s much needed. But we live at the end of the proposed D1 route in Kingston. Currently in peak times it runs every 5-20 mins. The proposed changes will cut that to every 30 mins- a dramatic change and not frequent enough to cope with demand. Buses every 15 min at peak times would be great on that route. It’s not rocket science! ’
        • ‘PS correction: I meant “to extend it to weekends and later in the evening” ’
        • ‘I was at the Brooklyn meeting and do not agree that the “general feeling” was that current services are fine! As so often happens, a few vocal people monopolised the discussion. Those of us who live on the no 8 bus route do not find the present service at all adequate, indeed we are very happy about the proposal to extend it to evenings and later in the evening. The main problem with the proposed changes is that they will be balanced by thinning out the no 7 route, which means that rush hour services, which are already often standing-room only, will not be able to cope. For example the morning peak time services are often already full by the time they reach Brooklyn village (where the no 7 and no 8 routes merge), so any reduction in bus numbers during that time will be very problematic. ’

        • ‘Good stuff. Hopefully someone can comment on my concern with light-rail through the Golden Mile; would that mean rail-tracks in the street? Those are deadly for bicycles. If there’s a way to do light-rail that doesn’t conflict with safe on-street bicycling (elevated or otherwise segregated), them I’m all for it. Maybe with light-rail it would be feasible to do a tight loop around the Golden Mile? Then make the GM exclusively non-motorized…? The “Electrify Wellington” title on the Green’s page also reminded me of this: Diesel buses in most cities use exhaust pipes that are at the top-rear of the bus, not the bottom-rear. Here in Wellington, being behind a bus on a bicycle often means being caught in a cloud of black smoke when the light turns green. GWRC should require that diesel buses are fit with taller exhaust pipes. That should have been done before the new buses were ordered, but I’m sure they can be re-fit. ’

        • ‘I would have loved to see the Golden Mile become car free as part of this review. That would make plenty of space for proper bike lanes along the Golden Mile and a new pedestrian plaza at the north end of Lambton Quay. ’
