The strength of grass-roots opposition to an expressway through Kapiti is shown in this week’s announcement that residents are planning to march on parliament. The “frustrated and angry” residents aim to target Transport Minister Stephen Joyce, whose Transport Agency is preparing to build the new motorway.
You can’t help feeling sorry for the 15 (or more) Raumati South families who’ve discovered that their houses will be demolished to make way for the southern entrance to the new Kapiti expressway.
This is part of the new $500million expressway which Kapiti Coast residents are concerned will slice through the heart of their district, dividing east from west. The four-lane expressway is being planned by the New Zealand Transport Authority, but the image – showing four lanes cutting through a residential area of Paraparaumu Beach – wasn’t seen till campaigners obtained it by using the Official Information Act.
