From: Wayne Hastie, GWRC

- Rumours are flying that the NZ Transport Agency will begin consultation on the options for the Basin Reserve on Monday 22 February, and that five options will be presented - three involve building an unnecessary flyover, and two are "at grade", i.e. ground level without a flyover. Consultation will run for six weeks.

- There has been a predictable reaction from the NZ Transport Agency to the Architecture Centre's innovative designs for the Basin Reserve - it's too hard and too expensive. According to the Capital Times:

- Over on wellington.scoop Lindsay Shelton is asking how the NZ Transport Agency has become the object of so much contempt from local communities. He notes that even columnist Karl du Fresne at the Dominion Post is increasingly skeptical about the performance of this agency:

- The DominionPost is reporting that shortages of engineers are likely to drive up the costs and delay the completion of infrastructure projects across the country:
New Zealand will suffer a shortage of engineers and technical professionals as it embarks on multibillion-dollar infrastructure projects over the next decade, industry sources say.

- The NZ Transport Agency has created a few web pages about the Basin Reserve flyover, and it's pretty apparent they are trying to hide their real intentions behind some slick PR spin. Having looked at their Frequently Asked Questions and Orwellian answers, we thought it might be useful to provide the real responses to the questions.

- Save the Basin Reserve!
- Before Christmas the NZ Transport Agency began an "engagement process" with groups who are regarded as stakeholders in the Basin Reserve project. (This is euphemistically referred to as the "Basin Reserve Traffic Improvements", rather than being called a flyover. George Orwell would be proud.) In a series of meetings - which included the Save The Basin Reserve Campaign - NZTA outlined the next stages of the consultation process.

- Yesterday Transport Minister Steven Joyce announced a massive roading project, running from Levin in the north to the Airport in the south, that will cost taxpayers more than $2.5 billion, disrupt communities, demolish homes, and destroy the Basin Reserve as a test cricket venue. Within the Wellington CBD It includes the construction of a flyover at the Basin, two tunnels at The Terrace and Mt Victoria, a four-lane expressway across the city, the four-laning of Ruahine Street, and much more.

- Today is likely to be a day of infamy for the Basin Reserve.
The NZ Transport Agency is announcing the funding priorities for the Wellington region, and the Basin Reserve flyover is likely to remain as the number two priority, despite 89% of submitters being opposed to such a high priority for such a pointless project.

Wellington architecture blog Eye Of The Fish has an interesting discussion on the Memorial Parkway, the strip of land in front of the War Memorial in Buckle Street that was intended by the last government as an extension of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.
Given the proximity of this area to the Basin Reserve, there's been some conjecture that the two projects would end up being linked by the transport planners. It's worth taking a look at both the original article and the comments that follow.

- Worryingly, the Council has placed the Basin Reserve flyover as number two on its list of priorities, which raises the very real danger that they will proceed with this ill-conceived project as a matter of urgency. We're therefore asking supporters to put in a submission reqesting that the project be dropped.

- On Sunday the Mt Victoria Historical Society hosted a walk around the Basin Reserve, highlighting the heritage of this important precinct. The walk was hosted by Joanna Newman and Alan Olliver from the Historical Society. Thanks to the Wellington wind and the bells of the nearby Carillon, the audio quality is a bit patchy in parts, but the tour is an interesting insight into the heritage of the Basin Reserve.

- In the original consultation documents for the Ngauranga to Airport Corridor Plan, the flyover was being costed by NZTA at $27 million - although they have declined to provide any substantiation for their figures, and are currently claiming "commercial sensitivity" for how these numbers were arrived at.
But in the media coverage of the prioritisation of the flyover as the number 2 item on the regional transport wish-list, the cost has inexplicably risen by $10 million, to a quoted $37 million.
