Prince William visits Wellington Hospital

- An estimated two thousand people turned out on Tuesday 19 January to greet Prince William on his first official visit to Wellington Hospital. What was scheduled to be an hour long stopover turned into a ninety minute stay, as the Prince extended generous quantities of his time to speak with sick children in Wards 18 and 19.

Joint media release: DHBs plan to establish Joint Chair of Emergency Medicine for Wellington Region

- Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast DHBs have agreed to establish a Chair of Emergency Medicine for the Wellington region, covering Wellington and Hutt hospitals. Wellington and Hutt hospitals’ emergency departments are among the busiest in the country, which combined see almost 90,000 patients each year – 50,000 at Wellington and 40,000 at Hutt.

C&C DHB’s new scanner is first of its kind in Southern Hemisphere

- A brand new gamma camera which is now installed in Wellington Hospital means patients have access to technology that is restricted to just a few sites in the world. The new SPECT-CT gamma camera for nuclear medicine has just started being used and provides a much improved scan image for medical staff when diagnosing patients.

Clinical Director appointed

- Last month Dr Colin Feek was appointed Clinical Director for Kenepuru, Kapiti and Community Health. The appointment is part of a longstanding relationship he has had with Capital & Coast DHB that began when he emigrated from the UK in 1987 to become a specialist endocrinologist and physician at Wellington Hospital.

A Pandemic Pictorial

- Winter’s always a busy period at any hospital, and June 2009 was especially busy with the arrival of the “Swine Flu” pandemic adding further stresses and strains. The arrival of “Novel A H1N1” (to give the swine flu its proper name) required all hospital staff to rapidly adapt to the changing environment. Otago University School of Medicine photographer Lousie Goossens spent some time looking at the various roles C&C DHB staff played during the early stages of the swine flu pandemic.

Wellington Hospital gets OK to train super-specialists in treating high-risk pregnancies

- Wellington Hospital has become only the second hospital in New Zealand which is accredited to train specialist consultants in the management of high-risk pregnancies. The training – called Maternal and Fetal Medicine – will begin next year. Senior doctors who have already qualified as Obstetricians/Gynaecologists can then take a further three year course in this sub-specialty which focuses on high risk pregnancies.

Settlement the size of Mt Cook wiped out annually by smoking deaths

- Dr Julian Crane of Capital & Coast District Health Board says the equivalent of a settlement the size of Mt Cook is wiped out every year because of smoking. He was commenting on Face the Facts, a new series of messages to inform and educate the public about the health risks associated with smoking. Face the Facts is part of the Ministry of Health's ongoing tobacco control programme.

Wellington Celebrates new $285 Million Regional Hospital

- Wellington’s new Regional Hospital officially opened last week, with hundreds attending an historic Open Day.New services at the hospital include complex specialist and acute services, procedures and treatments such as the Intensive Care Unit, cardiac surgery, cancer care, cardiology procedures, neurosurgery and renal care.

Phoenix spreading Christmas cheer (18/12/08)

- The Children’s wards got a special visit today from Wellington’s A-League soccer team The Phoenix. It was the team’s first Christmas visit to the Children’s wards (18 and 19). Owner Terry Serepisos said because the players had such a huge following amongst children the team wanted to pay a special visit. “This is a way to give something back to the kids because the Phoenix is all about getting kids involved.”

Departments begin move into new WRH

- The first two clinical support departments have now made the shift into the new Wellington Regional Hospital building. Ribbon cutting of new radiology departmentRadiology (which includes X-Rays, MRIs and other diagnostic imaging) is up and running in the WRH, and saw its first patients there on 3 November. Sterile Services - who sterilise equipment used in operating theatres and other clinical settings - moved into the new building just a few days later.
