Why we can’t be smug about the leaky buildings on Auckland’s waterfront
- 16 Feb 2010
- Wellington Scoop
- I felt unreasonably smug at the weekend when I learnt that the Hilton Hotel on Princes Wharf in Auckland has had to close some of its best rooms because there are leaks in the walls. Would this have also been the fate of a Hilton Hotel in Wellington, had it been allowed to build on the outer-Tee of Queens Wharf?

- ‘It appears the leaking is based on the fact both buildings have flat roofs (which need lots of maintenance). The leaking is also occurring around window frames in the original facades of the buildings. As far as I can tell, none of it is the result of an’

We have a winner

- WELLINGTON will get a Hilton Hotel, but where will it go? “We don’t have anything we can release at the moment, it’s still a work in progress,” says Charlotte Seymour, public relations manager of Hilton Australasia. Wellington Waterfront Limited chair Ian Pike says the Hilton is looking to secure a waterfront site.

- Eye of the Fish
- It has been announced by the Wellington City Council, that following on from the demise of the proposal for a Hilton Hotel, there will be an ideas competition for the end of the Outer T on Queens Wharf: currently home to an old tin shed, as I’m sure you all know. The Hilton-to-be, as you will recall, was vanquished by the continued badgering of the combined forces of Waterfront Watch and the Civic Trust (go Grey Power!), and no one much seems to have mourned its passing (blogged by Philip back in March). The Hilton’s Auckland architects have left town with their tails between their legs, probably destined never to want to return. While details for the competition for the replacement building have not been clarified yet, there’s one thing for sure: there’s going to be a call for it to be Iconic.

The Hilton vanishes?
- 15 Mar 2008
- Eye of the Fish
- The potential Hilton hotel has had the appeals against its consent upheld, signalling what is likely to be the end of the controversial waterfront proposal. Having started the applications process back in later 2005, the news seems like it will be a decisive blow to the project; although an appeal is possible, it must go through the High Court.

Save Our Game
- 17 Aug 2007
- Zephyr Rovers FC
- Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall today confirmed he would be making a submission to the Wellington City Council next week to save sport on the waterfront. "The council has decided we need a Hilton Hotel on the waterfront and I have no issue with that" said Hall "but we want to see an alternative venue for sport on the waterfront as we sure can't jog to Kilbernie at lunch time to play in the new indoor facility out there".

- ‘Land Rovers: Waterfront Watch don't actually like the "swamp" (and the wetland is one of my favourite bits of Waitangi Park): they'd prefer nothing but paddock, with perhaps the odd rose garden or statue of Queen Victoria. Just as long as nothing spoils ’
- ‘Re: The Mound by the lagoon, I think its removal at this stage was a mistake, as it stood, you had 3 areas (East, North and Top that were resonably sheltered from the constant "swoosh" of road noise, now the entire area is exposed to both audiably and vi’
- ‘Let's face it Waterfront Watch would just build another swamp like Waitangi Park if they had their way - we need progress, we need a decent indoor soccer pitch and it has to be somewhere in the vicinity of Shed 1. And no we're not a narrow interest lobby’

- Just imagine the reaction if a huge multistorey structure appeared at Queens Wharf, full of wealthy foreigners, and serviced by coaches that interfere with pedestrian movement. There'd be a huge outcry, wouldn't there?

Rovers Back Save Our City Centre Sport
- 22 Sep 2006
- Land Rovers Football Club
- Land Rovers manager Steve Hall said this morning that Land Rovers would throw their full support behind Save Our City Centre Sport. "Comments made earlier in the week might suggest Rovers don't support inner city sport which we obviously do" said Hall "but let's face it ideally we'd like to have better facilites with little luxuries like toilets and showers, not available in the Shed of Dreams".

- ‘Waterfront Watch have cunningly turned the other end of the waterfront into a swamp feature, all we need now is mosquitos and the job is done. A hotel sounds much better’
- ‘The Hilton didn't end sport on the waterfront, you can build a hotel and have sport on the waterfront. However, the council might like now to consider how to accommodate sport down there’
