      • IT’S as we expected. Rugby supporters in Wellington for the weekend were well behaved. Around 20,000 Welsh, Irish, Springboks and Wallabies fans were in town and as many as 70,000 people packed out the city centre on Saturday night. Wel

        • ‘The WCC is simply spending at will at present, well above its means to repay, making the presumption that Wellington region councils will be merged so all the new extra ratepayers from hutt & porirua will be able to pay the bills long term. I can only imagine the hilarity once the other councils flatly refuse any such nonsense. ’
        • ‘Dear Natalie, before you are captured by either of the two monopoly publishers as perhaps your future employer, be aware that next year the modestly paid (by his opinion) town clerk, oops Chief Executive Officer of the WCC Gary Poole will again be rewarded for his “prudent management” of the Council’s finances despite a rapidly increasing debt which will arguably be around $400 million this time next year. But, as you’ve now discovered, the WCC can fob off any investigation or indulge in rather creative accounting (which even the mayor will not understand) in order to placate those who dare question WCC’s money matters. ’

        • ‘Great article & have been following Mr. Blanket Man for a while now and thanks to some relative? (Name will keep disclosed!) We here in Sarasota have our own street dwelller and local side-kick. Known as ” Shopping Cart Man.” He resides in Sarasota, Florida and we do believe, he is “infact” Blanket-Man’s, long lost cousin in the USA! Old shopping cart man, lives on the street and within our front stores, during most days. He’s easaly spotted to, with not only 1 but 2, pully assembled shopping-carts and piled high! The man has now a sleeping bag and more gear, to move from the truck depot & dumpster to, a local tree in some nearby neighborhood. He wants to live this way and has been helped by local officials, people in the neighborhood and amny, many other’s. He’s got clothes and is now fully operational, with 2 carts and a night-time light! Blanket Man in Wellington might have a Web Site but, our “Shopping-Cart Man is doin’, A Hell of a lot Better in Fla! Go Blanket Man and buy some new duds! And geta new act going and soon! “Shopping Cart Man” Sarasota! ’
        • ‘When Blanket Man was incarcerated at ward 27 to convert him to wearing black shorts before being allowed back on the streets of Wellington they asked him why he came to Wellington: Ben answered: To start my own business…… ’
        • ‘Dear Mr Nick Gray I read your article about Blanket Man of Wellington with great interest. I thought the article was very balanced and showed people’s thoughts for and against Blanket Man residing on the streets in Wellington. Thank you for a most interesting article. ’

    • Don’t sing in the railway station – it’s banned because of the Rugby World Cup
      • 8 Sep 2011
      • Wellington Scoop
      • Be warned. The ultra-strict Rugby World Cup rules take effect in Wellington this weekend. One of the most surprising bans – and one of the meanest – is a restriction on where buskers can perform. The city council always requires them to get a licence. (It’s free, after you’ve filled in a form and studied the guidelines.) But for the Rugby World Cup, with or without a licence, no busking will be allowed within 500 metres of the Westpac Regional Stadium.

        • ‘I”m a busker in invercargill. Normally I busk outside the rugby stadium as part of my license for every other game. At the RWC, some nice looking woman from the social economic department told me to move along and she wouldn’t accept my $20 bribe from making $70 in 40mims. After that day, according to the Invercargill city council I was told I wasn’t allowed, but luckily I was shown a spot that is 501m from the stadium that has decent foot traffic. I don’t follow the rugby but what’s the different between RWC and other games? And what is wrong with free street entertainment with a koha box? ’
        • ‘Not the first time Mr Plod the Policeman has changed his mind on Council press releases. ’
        • ‘Who do you believe? The council’s website continues to say that busking is not allowed in the railway station or the subway during the Rugby World Cup. But council spokesperson Richard MacLean seems to have changed the rules. In the DomPost this morning he says: “Following discussions with the World Cup organisers, we have decided to chill out about buskers down there. They are more than welcome as long as they don’t impede any organised events.” ’

    • Newtown Park closure during Rugby World Cup
      • 5 Sep 2011
      • Athletics Wellington
      • Newtown Park has been designated as a training ground for the Rugby World Cup. It is therefore closed for general use, and the locks which give our coaches “key access” will be changed this week. RWC have security concerns around their practice fields, and may well have their own security people up there. Parks and Gardens have managed to secure Athletics Wellington some limited access for our pre-season training.

        • ‘Geoff Running passenger trains is not cheap and yes fares are high here but I don’t think KR are making a killing here. It is strangely ironic that they price up the services here whilst they continue to charge most freight customers including Solid Energy, Fonterra, Mainfreight freight rates well below fully allocated costs. Long distance passenger rail is drawing the short straw but let’s face it bugger all of KiwiRail services generate enough revenue to cover their costs so is it a crime to try make a little bit of a surplus where they can?? ’
        • ‘I agree Geoff, monopoly pricing to support a bloated and oversized business (including overpaid CEOs and other executives) won’t work here, as buses and cars are such an easy (and often cheaper) alternative for customers. KiwiRail would be better to relinquish its government supported monopoly on passenger services nationally and pave the way for independent, lean, customer focused operators to step in and provide the rail services NZ deserves. ’
        • ‘Giel, the normal CC is a commercial service as well, so doubling the price can’t be justified purely on saying it is a commercial service. It’s more to do with KiwiRail not wanting to provide regular passenger trains anymore. They are only targeting high end tourist dollars, so have set their fare schedules accordingly, even for trains that don’t target tourists. KR is essentially pricing passenger trains off the domestic market, which is partly why they seek such a high subsidy for the proposed Waikato train. The future of passenger rail in NZ lies with other operators. ’

      •   Down on the waterfront between Shed 11 and Foxglove the construction of the ‘lobster loos’ has quietly started behind a discrete plywood hoarding.  No doubt these will be ready in time for revellers at the rugby world cup.     The last we heard of the toilets was late last year when councillors voted 8-6 to proceed with the [...]

      • The winter solstice is fast approaching …. Tuesday 21st June. This is our shortest day of the year when the sun will be at its most northerly point and at its lowest altitude. One question we are also being asked a lot lately is will be running late night sailings for the upcoming Rugby World Cup matches. The answer is most definitely yes and we hope, barring any other charter commitments, that we will be offering late night sailings for all the matches.
