Just Ice Skating Rink

      • The events manager who brought the last temporary ice-skating rink to Wellington says if a conventional rink is constructed at Queens Wharf it is doomed to fail. Phil Sprey managed the construction and maintenance of the ice rink at Waitangi (formerly Chaffers) Park, in 2002. He says an ice rink might make good political fodder, but it would be financially risky.

    • The pressure to spend more money, and the worry of a bad reputation

      • Wellington Scoop
      • The Wellington City Council’s waterfront company is keeping the pressure on councilors to pay for two expensive and controversial projects which haven’t yet been approved. By June next year, says Wellington Waterfront Ltd in its Statement of Intent which was given to councilors on Friday, plans for the temporary ice skating rink and the temporary sideless tent “will be significantly advanced, if not completed.”

        • ‘Oh dear! Isn’t it a pity that we live in an age where mechanisms such as blogs are able to spread misinformation with gay abandon. Where to start? Just a few comments. I have work to attend to! The reason that a very small number of people (according to last years consultation process on this very issue!) want Wellington Waterfront absorbed into Council, is that they, rightly, think this will reduce the focus on the continued revitalisation of this wonderful space and nothing would happen as a result. Exactly what these few people want -no change. At the same time as this discussion goes on, Auckland has considered best practice in terms of rejuventating its waterfront – and guess what – they are modelling themselves on the Wellington example because it is so successful. So, a CCO will be established for this purpose – a transparent, focussed and fully accountable organisation that is answerable to the people of Auckland via its Council! Allan Probert’s accusation that WWL is one of the worst performing CCO’s is a comment that demands substantiation. On what basis is the outrageous comment made? Where are your facts Allan? Mayoral candidates must do better than make sweeping statements like this. I challenge you to support your statement – with hard facts drawn upon our delivery against clearly articulated objectives and performance measures. Which one of these objectives have we failed on: recognition of design locally and internationally ? improved accessibility? safety? attractive place? development of events and activities? protection of heritage builidngs? integration with the harbour. Go on Allan, tell me. I know this may be astonishing, but a market that attracts on average 8,000 people each week (Wellington’s biggest regular event?) does not run itself! Stall development, sustainability measures, health and safety, eftpos facilities, car parking – all takes management!! Two staff work 15 hours a week to deliver this incredibly popular weekly attraction. Hardly symptomatic of an organisation out of control. Hope this goes some way to clarify just a few issues. Looking forward to hard facts to dispute my response. ’
        • ‘As I understand not only does the Council’s Parks and Reserves tend the open spaces on the Waterfront but all events are also organised by Council. This begs the question why the Waterfront Company saw the need to increase their staff by five, two to serve the Motorhome Park and two to serve the Harbourside market and a Maintenance Contractor. Currently with the arrival of winter the Campervan park is not well patronised and surely if there is a member of staff sitting in the office all day, these toilets could be made available to the public instead of the “crayfish pots” planned at $375.00 on top of whatever these new Motorhome facilities cost. Even with the expected popularity in the summer and rugby world cup, most of these visitors are unlikely to be sitting around the camp all day so cannot imagine there would be queues! With markets only open at the weekends, again why two new extra staff? As for the suggestion that the “tent” might be used as a food venue, there are already food outlets and coffee vans in the area, plus extra on market days, and the sports folk who currently use Shed 1 in their lunch time, are in the majority based in the CBD and unlikely to either transfer to this end of the city or if they did hav e time to sit in the tent to eat! To suggest that this “temporary structure” would provide an architectural solution between Te Papa and the Park is laughable. ’
        • ‘The motorhome works OK? You must be joking Celia. From casual observation, it appears that there are seldom more than a few vans on site. This must provide a poor return for a half-million dollar investment, ongoing running costs and the expenses of two staff that rumour has it have been employed to look after the enterprise. Another observation is that the half-naked sleepy bodies that roll out during peak traffic times tend to be overweight older males. Not a great turn on! Presumably a solid fence was not on the plan as the general public would than get an idea of the views that will be lost when Hilton Hotel ends up there now that Variation 11 has stymied ratepayer concerns. ’
