Or, how far can you travel on a Flamingo before it dies on you? A Pōneke Easter Experiment. Do not try this at home. It’s not wholly dangerous, but it is a little foolhardy. Mostly it’s just time consuming and will make your legs ache. I’ve been scooting ever since I was a kid. I […]

Bond Street needs us

So I’ve been thinking about Bond Street for a while.

Council is currently planning changes to the area. Submissions are open on Traffic Resolution TR70-12 (PDF). The rationale for the change is reasonably strong – 7 reported crashes at the intersection of Bond and Willis Streets since 2010. The basic proposal is also reasonable – closing the intersection and making the west section of Bond Street into a cul-de-sac.

You know when you tag on with a Snapper and the voice goes "PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO TAG OFF"? Well, duh.

Snapper have realised that these voice alerts are kind of annoying and/or unnecessary; and that we as public transport users have learned how the magical fish box works, so they're updating the Snapper sounds.

Here's a handy table of the changes:

If you're a pedestrian, sometimes it seems as though you're the last to be considered. Other modes of transport get all the big bucks while we get to stumble along on our own, catching our heels on the cobblestones and dodging the seemingly interminable earthworks.

So it's nice to see that there's a dedicated Cycling and Walking journey planner from the Greater Wellington Regional Council

Having observed a steaming hot urn of it at the Southern Cross on Saturday night, surrounded by blankets and hot water bottles, we want to know: where can one get the best mulled wine in Wellington, how much will we have to pay for it, and approximately what alcoholic percentage will it be?
Do our work for us in the comments section. Thanks!

Some of us at the Wellingtonista are rather fond of the old Snapper card. We worked through its teething troubles and are now happily tagging on and off as we bus about the city.
So when Miki Szikszai, CEO of Snapper, asked us if we'd like to visit Snapper HQ and learn a bit about what's new in the world of the magical talking fish box, we (well, Alan and I) jumped at the chance.

It's been a long time since we've mentioned Snapper in these pages.
In the meantime it's become so much of an everyday part of life in Wellington now that it hardly seems worth mentioning anymore. Or is it?
Recently we got an email from Snapper asking us if we'd like to come and see what they're up to. It seems they've had a few other things on the go as well as the recent Valley Flyer conversion

Cold Train

Wellington's Tranz Metro trains have lately been known for certain carriages with broken heating. It's horrible enough being (relatively) young and only faced with a 30-minute chilly commute. I wouldn't want to be a Paraparam gran making the hour-long trip to Wellington in an unheated carriage.

But it seems that while the carriages are slowly being fixed, Trans Metro are also paying attention to,

So, the John St/Riddiford St/Adelaide Rd intersection has undergone a bit of a lights phasing tweak. It took this particular Wellingtonista by surprise when, last week, I confidently started to cross John St as the lights turned to red, only to discover that instead of my little green man, I was now the target for traffic coming down from Adelaide Rd.

You don't have to be a trainspotter or J-line commuter to be interested in the redevelopment of the Johnsonville Line (though it undoubtedly helps). In any case, you shouldn't miss your one and only opportunity tomorrow to walk the tracks between Crofton Downs station and the Wadestown crossing loop. Highlights include spectacular views of the gorge and a couple of spooky tunnels to explore.

Of course, the GWRC transport plans (PDF) are well worth protesting about: more roads, no light rail? Despite the hundreds (and the great majority) of submissions asking for the opposite?

Wellington has a pretty kick-arse public transport system as it is, with a well used network of buses, trolley buses, trains and the good ol' cable car.

It's been a couple weeks since we last checked in on Snapper.
The Snapper rollout has continued apace, and some of us haven't used our old ten-trips for two whole weeks! (Well, we were excited about this, anyway.)
More and more people are boarding buses armed with the cards; and more and more buses (and their drivers) are ready to take them.
And in the meantime we've learnt many things.
