Maranui v2

It's a cold, rainy Tuesday afternoon in the first day of winter. Why, it's a perfect day to go to the beach!

The occasion is the first day of business for the back-from-the-dead Maranui Cafe. After being damaged in a fire last year, escaping the threat of demolition and managing to keep not just the building intact but also the business, the cafe has been reborn, like a phoenix rising from a pile of coffee grounds and sand.

Wellington is a good place to get shipwrecked

We've written before about the fire at the Maranui Surf Cafe, and how bloody sad that was, but it's kind of bloody lovely to see the way that this city can be all small-town-like and good-hearted, with yet more events planned to raise money for the cause.

The new Phoenix Foundation video, directed and starring Academy Award®-nominated director Taika Waititi is a wee gem, following our energetic protagonist in a one-shot piece of filming that takes him around the western coastline of Lyall Bay.

Exhibition - Deborah Barton

Deborah Barton is a Wellington-based print maker. She has done a number of exhibitions, and is about to open at the Solander Gallery in Lyall Bay this Saturday, 13 October.
Deborah's prints are dark and intriguing, with overtones of childhood mysteries.
And now for the good news. As a young artist Deborah's work is surprisingly reasonably priced...
Need I say more.
