It’s a Renters World, and We’re…Not Living in it?

You may have seen headlines telling you that Wellington rental prices are dropping, that it’s a renter’s market, or that with the exodus of public service workers from the capital, landlords are getting desperate. To some extent, that is true, and to a greater extent, it’s not.

Salient asked Trade Me about the current perceptions of the rental market. Year on year, the asking price for a property in Wellington was down 2.9%, and since September 2024, Trade Me saw a 28% increase in the number of rental listings in the city. These figures might lead you to believe that rents are dropping. Well, they’re not (in most places). Between December 2024 and January 2025, the median rental price went from $650 to $675 according to Trade Me’s data.

Amelia Bentley on Keeping Her Art Sacred

Amelia Bentley is an artist who captures beauty with both brush and intellect, balancing her life between her passion for art and a more academic career path. Currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Science at Te Herenga Waka, Amelia is majoring in Data Science and Psychology, disciplines that may seem worlds apart from her deep connection to painting. Growing up in Wellington, the proximity of Victoria University allowed her to pursue her dual passions while remaining close to home. But this balance between art and academia has been anything but simple.

The Lochburn family have moved into Circa Theatre from the 5th of October to the 2nd of November, filling the stage with family drama, nostalgia, and lots of music. and the Lochburns, by married couple William Duignan and Andrew Paterson—playwright and director, respectively—presents an authentic depiction of a family moving through grief and change (with an ensemble cast of talented actor-musicians).

Review: Ngā Rorirori

After debuting in 2022 with great success, Ngā Rorirori is back and better than ever. Combining contemporary dance, commedia farce, and traditional theatre, this show is like no other Māori lands settlement story you've seen before.

Set in the wharekai of a rural marae, Ngā Rorirori centres around a brother and sister's newfound ownership of their rohe as the last two members of their hapū. Pillow, the tungane (Manuel Solomon), is a convicted fraudster recently released from prison looking to sink his teeth into another cash-grab project. Manuela, the pōtiki (Mycah Keall), is a forthright activist trying to keep her whānau from falling apart. As the new owners, they have an incredible responsibility placed on them. And today is the day that the Department of Whakapapa, Whenua and Whatever will come to cement their title as rangatira. Will Pillow give up the whenua to make some big-time mulla? Or will Manuela save the day with mana wāhine?

While Metlink reports an overall 79% satisfaction with its public transport service, public transport advocacy group Better Buses Ōwhiro Bay (BBŌW) argues their suburb is being left behind.

Mimicking the questions Metlink uses during its satisfaction survey, BBŌW’s own survey found 84% of Ōwhiro Bay residents were dissatisfied with the coverage the suburb receives. Comparatively, only 10% of Metlink’s region-wide survey recipients expressed dissatisfaction.

Rose Hu’s journey as an artist began in the most unlikely of places: an office job she loathed. 'I was working an office job for the government, and it made me want to die,' Rose shared candidly in an interview. 'I had always been creative, but I followed a more traditional career path because I was taught that "art" wasn’t a viable career. I never found it fulfilling, and I reached a point where I realised I needed to fully commit to giving a creative career a go.'

It’s 4:45 PM on a Wednesday night. Across the city of Wellington, hospo workers are preparing for the dinner shift. They are setting tables, wiping down bars, and fixing kegs. If you’re reading this article, you’re probably a student, and the chances are you’re all too familiar with this ritual. Equally familiar is the pre-shift briefing. Depending on the temperament of your manager, this could sound like anything from group therapy to a fiery military pep talk. Tonight, though, I’ve been invited to sit in on one such briefing for the non-profit restaurant Everybody Eats.
