More tea, Martha?

So winter kinda sucks, and the economy sucks, and the government sucks, and everything pretty much sucks. Except oh wait, do you know what doesn't suck? Tea and cakes and good company! So as the first of a series of posts of Cheering Upness, we'd like to recommend that you book yourself and an adored friend in for High Tea at Martha's Pantry, a lovely little place at the top of Cuba Street that has oldschool tea cups and all kinds of girlie pretty stuff on display.

Enigmatic

Die-hard Espressoholic fans seem to be happy that it will continue in a new location, taking over from Dorothy's Patisserie in Cuba St. There are still grumblings about its previous location being taken over by "another godawful Courtenay Place bar", but there are signs that its replacement, "Enigma", might not be another Shooters or Electric Avenue.

We've mentioned Habebie Restaurant before (well, actually I can't find a link, so maybe we didn't actually) but we have exciting news - it's BYO now (and may have been for a while now), but more importantly, from Monday-Thursday, all mains (except seafood) are $17.

This should be more popular: Chef's Cafe

At the top of Cuba Street, opposite Fidel's and next to a sex shop is what appears to be a crappy little tea room named Chef's Cafe. You might think that they're going to try and sell you a pie and a custard square, but you couldn't be more wrong. See that little sandwich board outside that says "Takeaway Curry $10"? That's right, this is an Indian restaurant. And it's good. And it's insanely cheap*.

The Masked Barfly has joined the problem drinkers in Cuba Mall. No, I haven't started quaffing meths or wrestling diners for their steaks (it's all a filthy lie): Good Luck have gone overground and now have an outdoor drinking area in the middle of the mall.

Plum position

As anyone who frequents Cuba St should know, Plum has been undergoing renovations for a while. The old Plum had been well-liked (as these reviews attest), but was starting to feel a little tired: perhaps somewhere between the late Krazy Lounge and Mr Bun. I expected little more than a lick of paint and some new furniture, so it's a bit of a surprise to see it in its sleek new incarnation by Alistar Cox of Matterhorn, Mojo and Mighty Mighty fame.

Krazy Lounge has Konked out. There's a sign on the door saying "Sorry, Krazy Lounge is closed forever. R.I.P.", and the inside is currently being used as a temporary sale shop for the appropriately-named fashion label Insidious Fix.
