Q and A for the Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay Residents Association
- Sarah Free
- SARAH FREE STANDING FOR WCC EASTERN WARD POLICIES: Rates: Ideally we would keep rates at not much more than the rate of inflation, but this is often not possible, partly because the costs of things Council provides (roads, water infrastructure etc) have risen faster than the average rate of inflation, and partly because residents and businesses often want more for their city.

When the media advocate racism to hide the real culprits behind bad driving

New Cycleway/Walkway for Kilbirnie
- Sarah Free
- Very happy to report that funding has been approved in WCC’ s draft annual plan to create a new cycleway/walkway across Kilbirnie from Cockburn Street along the back of the bus barns and Rongotai College to Lyall Bay- Wellington’s first linear park. Great for walkers, kids learning to ride, family recreation, and creating an oasis […]

Thoughtful Urban Planning Essential for Wellington’s Success
- Sarah Free
- A few days ago, I asked a Lyall Bay business owner what it would take for his business to grow, and his answer was swift: more space. He happens to be a successful panel beater, and that is his current pinch point. This simple comment started me thinking about the need for really intelligent urban […]

Storm
- Eye of the Fish
- Well, wouldn’t you know it – the storm of the century in Wellington, and I’m not there to see it. From all accounts, it was a real doozy – I’m glad to hear that Wellington has pulled through, even if various seaside properties are minus fences and stretches of roads. Best quote for me came from that bloke in Lyall Bay, who was quoted as saying “you think you’ve got a fence, and then you don’t” which for some reason I found very funny. I was a little distressed to hear of some of my fellow fish found flapping their last across a stretch of highway though.

Maranui v2
- The Wellingtonista
- It's a cold, rainy Tuesday afternoon in the first day of winter. Why, it's a perfect day to go to the beach! The occasion is the first day of business for the back-from-the-dead Maranui Cafe. After being damaged in a fire last year, escaping the threat of demolition and managing to keep not just the building intact but also the business, the cafe has been reborn, like a phoenix rising from a pile of coffee grounds and sand.

Surf’s Up Too
- Eye of the Fish
- People power rules. Or so it seems today - if the paper is right, then the Maranui may be about to be saved. We discussed the 5th Scenario here, with some reasonably heated dialogue, but it sounds as though a sensible agreement has been reached.

South Coast Surfs Up
- Eye of the Fish
- Although not an overly frequent frequenter to the suburbs, there is a certain feeling about being by the beach that we quite like: if we weren’t an urban blog, we’d be a seaside blog. Lyall Bay, home of Wellington’s best surf break, and a special spot for windsurfing and kite boarding, is a virtual paradise right on the edge of the capital city. At the edge of the Cook Straight, at times civilised, at other times wild beyond redemption, Lyall Bay is a fantastic place to be in the ‘burbs. In short, the Fish liked to dine at the Maranui Cafe.

Wellington is a good place to get shipwrecked
- The Wellingtonista
- We've written before about the fire at the Maranui Surf Cafe, and how bloody sad that was, but it's kind of bloody lovely to see the way that this city can be all small-town-like and good-hearted, with yet more events planned to raise money for the cause.

Compassionate Charitable Coffee
- Texture
- Yip. We all heard about it. Wellington's finest kitsch-1940's-styled-Lyall-Bay-based Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and Cafe was a fiery inferno in the early hours of Saturday morning last weekend. Initially, charred like a lava rock, it looked doubtful whether this prominent seaside haven would be restored, BUT with overwhelming support from Wellington City Council, Wellington businesses and the Wellington community at large it will be.

Local Hip-Hop about to go Ballistic
- Texture
- It’s time to embrace the future of hip-hop – starting with Wellingtons own prodigy of rhyme-time, that man we call ‘Flowz.’ This local master of the mike can put many overseas lyricists to shame, which you can witness for yourself at his show, The Jam Sessions, at bar Bodega on Friday the 24th of October. Flowz (Whose real name is Fiso Siliota) will be accompanied by the USOS, along with guest stars of a weighty caliber, including hip-hop royalty in Dam Native, DJ CXL (Ill Semantics), the Footsouljahs, Perceieve, Wanderers, Delta Sierra, F4, plus DJ Raw, Kerb1 & ninjasteps in the DJs cockpit. Straight outta Lyall Bay, Flowz is definitely one rising MC to be respected. You add in the power of Dam Native plus the skills of CXL and Raw, and boy, you have one hell of a fiery gig just waiting to go up in smoke. This show will also wet the appetites of those awaiting hip-hop Aotearoa – a celebration in respect of Kaupapa Maori Music Week - which will be shaking the Bodges walls on Thursday the 30th of Oct. This one will be a terrific showcase of the young go-getters in Kiwi hip-hop, so make sure you are amped, primed and pumped after checking out Flowz and company the week before. Oh, and you can also win tickets to Flowz right here on Texture as well. For the rest of you it’s just $20 for tickets to ‘The Jam Sessions,’ which are on sale now from the Wakefield Hotel and Real Groovy on Cuba Street. -Darren

Exhibition - Deborah Barton
- The Wellingtonista
- Deborah Barton is a Wellington-based print maker. She has done a number of exhibitions, and is about to open at the Solander Gallery in Lyall Bay this Saturday, 13 October. Deborah's prints are dark and intriguing, with overtones of childhood mysteries. And now for the good news. As a young artist Deborah's work is surprisingly reasonably priced... Need I say more.
