Stadium Roof East

Following on, in a timely sort of manner, and because the Wellington wind has gone away and left us with some perfect walking / swimming / photo-taking weather, I thought it would be nice to have a look at the roof of the new Indoor Sports Stadium in Wellington.

Support needed for Cobham Park indoor sports stadium

The Cobham Park indoor sports stadium is going through the notified resource consent process and we need as many submissions as possible in support of this project. The indoor facility will be a fantastic asset for netball in Wellington, and will save us from playing in all the horrible winter weather.

New developments re: the Cobham Park Indoor Courts

Netball Wellington have advised that although everything was moving ahead towards the resource consent process for the development of the new indoor courts at Cobham Park, this is now being reviewed as part of the Council’s Annual Plan process. Andy Foster from the council has questioned the need for 12 courts. He is pushing to revisit the ’sites analysis’ with the idea of 8 courts at the Port (if the land can be obtained) and possibly covering some courts at Hataitai (amongst other possibilities).

Good sports

There's a Waterfront Development Subcommittee meeting on tomorrow night, and for once, I'm not going to put myself through all that pain. While there's no single development up for specific debate, this time, feedback is due on the entire draft Waterfront Development Plan, so all the interested parties are having their say.Of the 633 written submissions, 604 were about the future of indoor sport given the changes to Sheds 1 and 6; and in particular, most of these called for the ground floor of Site 10 to become the new indoors sports venue, along the lines of what I've also been suggesting.

A sporting site

Submissions on the Draft Waterfront Development Plan close on Friday, and while my opinion on most of it is just "get on with it", there's one area where I'll be promoting a specific change. While the ground floors of Sites 8, 9 and 10 have been designated simply as "retail", I think that Site 10 should be explicitly set aside as an indoor sports facility to replace Sheds 1 and 6.

Bringing it back

As Kegan pointed out, there's a story on the front page of today's Dominion Post about the council reconsidering the placement of the indoor stadium: they're now thinking of putting it on the edge of Harbour Quays rather than way out at Kilbirnie. So it's almost come full circle, as the site is adjacent to the location originally proposed!
