Toxic Algae Now In Wainuiomata River

- Toxic algae infestation has now spread to the Wainuiomata River. The algae has been widespread in the Hutt River system over the past few weeks and is blamed for the deaths of at least four dogs. The Wainuiomata and Hutt Rivers have separate catchments.

Toxic Algal Bloom Continues to Threaten

- All time record low flows in the Hutt River for this time of the year mean the toxic algae threat in Hutt Valley waterways continues. The Hutt River at Taita Gorge has not even maintained a flow level of five cubic metres for most of the past week and the river level is falling. This time last year, the flow was more like 20 cumecs.

WATERWAYS ALGAE THREAT DURING WEEKEND

- The Hutt City Council is warning Hutt Valley residents over the weekend that the toxic algal bloom in the Hutt River is not restricted to the Hutt River itself. The Greater Wellington Regional Council issued a warning on Wednesday of high toxin levels in Hutt River algae. It has now killed at least two dogs.

Bridge closed to prevent overload
