What a season we have had. I know we haven’t celebrated our tamariki as often as we should in this newsletter, but hopefully our social media content has shown how we love seeing what they and the parents achieve. Jump on Facebook www.facebook.com or instgram www.instagram.com/maranuislsc/.

As I look back over this season I feel proud of every child that pulls on togs or wetsuit and hits the water at Sunday sessions, Carnivals & Mid week development sessions. I thank our amazing coaches for the effort and care they give to developing these amazing kids. We did not cancel a Sunday session, ran for 3 extra weeks into March and ran the Inaugural Boat ramp to beach swim.

This year had 18 athletes regularly taking part in mid week development & 16 of those headed to Oceans - Junior surf nationals and represented Maranui with pride and showed all the values of the Maranui way. We also had a steady 6-10 keen paddlers come on a Thursday to board skills sessions. We want to grow these groups and grow more lifeguards as well as athletes who continue through to lifeguard sports.

We can not achieve what we achieve without unwavering support from our parent group, sign in crew, lifeguards and board members. Thank you to the parents who have become officials this year, managed age groups at carnivals and squeegeed the floor before leaving, it was noticed and appreciated. As we plan for 2023/24 we are always looking for more officials, coaches, helpers …If your not sure what you can do give me a call/text/email. If you have any thoughts on what we can do to support more kids getting involved again reach out.

Sunday 7th May is our end of season celebration. We celebrate the success of our tamariki, excellence in our senior lifeguard sport athletes, achievements of lifeguards in service and our amazing volunteers. Please do join us, its also an opportunity to meet some of those people you don’t see often or haven’t met but do heaps for our Nippers.

MARANUI REPRESENTS AT TSB NATIONALS 2023 IN NEW BRIGHTON

Big, challenging, scary and exciting are all words that Maranui's lifeguard sport team would use to describe the surf conditions at TSB Nationals. Maranui has been going through a rebuilding phase of it's senior team with only 2 current athletes having experienced Nationals previously thanks to Covid. The club has some exciting talent that showed their potential and that they are heading in the right direction.

Athletes made a number of finals across the age groups. Whilst only one Podium was achieved the young team showed they are on the cusp of producing podium finishes, by recording 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths and top 15's in highly competitive races and challenging conditions.

Ski events were incredibly hard in 3 metre surf and gnarly sandbars. It was incredibly satisfying to see our U19 women's ski relay team of Holly Reynolds, Ruby Douglas and Ella Strang rewarded with a bronze.

Coach Rhys is looking forward to continuing the work and fun, seeing what can be achieved in 2023/24 as the team matures and the mahi starts.

                            MARANUI IRB RACE TEAM

The Maranui IRB Team competed at the 2023 bp New Zealand IRB Championships at Waihi Beach, Bay of Plenty on Saturday 15 April. Unfortunately due to surf conditions, Day 2 racing (Sunday 16 April) was cancelled.

Day 1 - Strong wind and rough conditions meant a challenging day of racing for the crews.

Upcoming events

Round the Bays, 16 February, Frank Kitts Park

Round the Bays is the biggest running festival in Wellington. It’s one of our best opportunities to invite new people to join the club. So, repeating from above, here are five big favours to ask this week for everyone doing RTB:

Wear your singlet – be visible and promote the club; Join us at the yellow tent afterwards; Say hello to the people near you during the run/walk and invite them to visit us at the yellow tent; Tell friends and colleagues who had fun to come and talk to us; and Sign up for our membership special for 2020-2021.

Michelle Knight will be coordinating that recruitment drive. If you think you can help either beforehand with promotion, publicity and administration support or on the day handing out flyers, staffing our tent and talking to people about Scottish contact her.

Todd Stevens, todd.stevens@pwc.com is looking for a 40min pacer for the 10km. Please let him know if you want to help.

Matairangi Fun Run, 23 February Hataitai Velodrome,

Open to the public, the Matairangi Fun Run, based on Mount Victoria, runs over the iconic Vosseler Shield course. There are two race options: the One Loop Race (5 km); or the Two Loop Race (two 5 km loops, adding up to 10 km). Each loop has approximately 190 metres of elevation.

McVilly Shield Relay, 7 March, Karori Park

The McVilly Shield is the first club event for the season and a great way to get to know other people in the club. This relay has teams of three people each. Everyone can participate, runners, walkers, J Team, seniors, masters and friends of the club. Just turn up and we will find you a team. You can either race it or use it as an opportunity to do some training.

Each team must do ten laps of Karori Park. No individual team member can do more than four laps. But you can do the laps in any order you like. The race is randomly handicapped after the teams start.

Commuting by bicycle in Wellington

In the past few years the number of people I see on bikes riding from Newtown to town in the morning has literally quadrupled. Unfortunately, many of the people I see stopped at the lights are on seriously terrible bikes.
I’m see rusty, too-big or too-small mountain bikes with brakes that barely work and people look unconfident and uncomfortable on their bikes. Riding the wrong bike can actually make cycling seriously not fun.
Recently several of my colleagues have gotten bicycles with the intention of cycling to work. I have noticed that they too seem to have missed some items that to me are essential for bike commuting.
Namely:

Hataitai Swimming Club - 1971 to 2008

The early 1970s proved a critical period for the club. The clubrooms were not being fully utilised but of course still had to be maintained to health regulation standards. Membership had declined. There was little supervision of the use of the clubrooms at weekends. The public were using the rooms without making any contribution to the upkeep costs. Learn to swim classes at the beach were spasmodic and were becoming less popular. Lessons ceased altogether at Hataitai Beach in 1972 after 61 years.

Hataitai Swimming Club - 1940 to 1970

The Second World War robbed the Hataitai Bathing Club of young men and women. However the club continued to operate a learn to swim programme. Community social activity began to flourish after the cessation of hostilities in 1945. The energy of comradeship and togetherness learned during the previous six years greatly assisted the rejuvenation of clubs such as the Hataitai Bathing Club.

New developments re: the Cobham Park Indoor Courts

Netball Wellington have advised that although everything was moving ahead towards the resource consent process for the development of the new indoor courts at Cobham Park, this is now being reviewed as part of the Council’s Annual Plan process. Andy Foster from the council has questioned the need for 12 courts. He is pushing to revisit the ’sites analysis’ with the idea of 8 courts at the Port (if the land can be obtained) and possibly covering some courts at Hataitai (amongst other possibilities).
