Review: Dating’s a Drag

Dating apps have seen a decrease in usage, signalling a shift in the way people want to approach dating. Selina Simone and Homer Neurotic, two of Wellington's popular drag performers, have come up with a unique solution: Dating's a Drag (pun intended). This event has become an annual occurrence, specifically catering to members of the queer community. I recently attended their She 4 Her event at Mishmosh on May 24th. They also have a They 4 Them event planned for June 7th and an inclusive Queer 4 Queer event scheduled for June 21st.

The event, titled ‘Unsilenced: Middle New Zealand on Ideology’, was attended by a delightful collection of virulent anti-trans campaigners, including the frothingly homophobic culture war ‘apostle’ Brian Tamaki, celebrity bigot ‘Posie Parker’ (via video-link), Tanya Unkovich, a current MP for NZF, and Simon O’Conner, a former MP for National.

The uniting visual theme of this art exhibition is the broccoli, which our team has embraced as a symbol of queer joy and frivolity during this difficult time for our rainbow communities. With transphobia and online hate speech continuing to rise, we wanted to create a space of joy and silliness that gave a platform to rainbow artists of all generations and backgrounds.

Review: An Old-Fashioned Lesbian Love Story

Whisking us back to a world of swing jazz and giggle juice, Bars Behind Bars is an immersive experience. From the moment the audience enters, the actors are scattered about, welcoming us, having secret conversations in the hallway, sending us back in time. The show begins with a fourth-wall-breaking introduction to the characters and their lives at The Cat’s Pajamas, an illicit bar in Manhattan during the prohibition. When the bar’s owner is murdered in the back room, his wife Annie is the primary suspect of the interrogation.

Proposal for a Body Reading List

Proposal for a Body posits that sound and text-matter are mediums that can be regarded as inherently queer in their expansive and corporally liminal states. Jo Bragg and Georgina Brett draw on the music and writing of artists Loren Connors and Kim Gordon to communicate through sound and poetry abstract-experience; what is inexplicable.
