Distance Learning Plan (DLP) On Monday 23 August all Year 1 to 13 students will move to full DLP. This differs a little from the programme your child has been following in the past few days as we now move to both synchronous (live Teams or Zoom video lesson) and asynchronous (independent class work as set by your teacher on Teams or Seesaw) learning. All information outlining our DLP is available on the College website and can be accessed directly from the home page. We encourage all families, whether you attended the College during lockdown in 2020 or not, to familiarise themselves with this over the weekend. https://www.scotscollege.school.nz/distance-learning-package/ Junior School: At the beginning of each week, classroom teachers will send an email with the weekly overview. Students in Years 1-4 will continue to access their work through Seesaw and in Years 5-6 through Onenote. Further information will be communicated shortly. Middle & Senior School: Students will be provided with a clear weekly learning plan via their class Teams/notebook for each class by 8:45am on Monday mornings to ensure they know what learning they need to accomplish each week. All Year 7-13 students are expected to attend at least one synchronous (face to face) lesson with their core and semester teachers by the close of school Tuesday 24 August. The exact details of which lesson and when will be given in their weekly plan. If a parent or student is unsure of what they should be doing please contact your teacher or House Dean via email in the first instance. In addition there are a variety of resources available to assist parents, students and staff. School TV have recently released a helpful article: Instilling hope in uncertain times Although life is always filled with uncertainty, the levels we are currently experiencing are unprecedented and it is becoming evident that this is taking a toll on our young people. In new research published on the impact of the pandemic, it makes clear the breadth and depth of the toll it is having on young people. It appears that snap lockdowns and tighter restrictions will be with us for some time, but it is important in such times of uncertainty to instil hope and remain optimistic. Adult carers can play a vital role in helping young people reframe their worries, encouraging them to see life as it is and getting them to focus more on the things they can control, rather than those they can’t. • MAPS performance at Tu Tagata Festival
      • This year’s Wellington Secondary Schools Tu Tagata Festival was a memorable night of celebrating our cultural beliefs, traditions, and values through the medium of Dance and Singing. Scots College MAPS (Maori and Pasifika students) group had the privilege of performing their Maori and Polynesian repertoire with their intricate and powerful movements. The MAPS journey, of embracing their Maori and Pasifika cultures, captured the essence of their identity and honouring of their heritage – past, present, and future. MAPS produced a stunning performance with a strong opening act of the Whakaeke followed by the graceful movements of the girl’s poi dance led by Rosearna Stairmand. The sounds of the pacific reverberated through the hearts of the Wellington audience. The impact of the MAPS performance cemented their place for the next event. Brilliant performances led by Tana, Cody, Rachel, Merenia and Valentine. This was followed by Year 13 Maea, who showed a lot of passion with exceptional strength on the ASB Tu Tagata Festival stage. The Pasifika songs and movements won the hearts of the Wellington people.MAPS would like to send a special thank you to the tutors, parents, families, and staff for contributing their time and support for our journey towards the Wellington Secondary Schools Tu Tagata Festival. This year’s performance was dedicated to Ana Fidow a dear mother of the MAPS group who passed away suddenly a week before the festival.

    • Learning Support Department Request
      • The students on the Learning Support Register are entitled to a variety of Special Assessment Conditions when they sit both internal and external assessments. These can be any combination of reader, writer, computer, extra time and separate accommodation. These conditions are applied for to NZQA and granted following testing and/ or recommendations from specialists. They are put in place to enable each student to reach their full potential. We are calling for volunteers to help us with provision of this support. It would involve coming into school and assisting a student (under strict NZQA guidelines) as either a reader and/ or a writer during an assessment. The Senior School Practice assessments will take place during Week 6 (Monday 24-28th August) Term 3 and the external NZQA examinations from 16th November to 9th  December and can occur at any time during the school day. Ideally we would like to be able to get the same person to work with the same student for both the practice and external exams but realise that this is not always possible due to prior commitments. We would however be able to give you advance notice of when your assistance would be required. If you have some spare time and are interested in helping us please email laingp@scotscollege.school.nz  by Friday 31 July.

    • SCPA Speaker Series: Jake Bailey
      • In 2015 Jake Bailey, then Christchurch Boys’ High School senior monitor was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitt’s Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Jake’s message of perseverance, hope and resilience is particularly relevant during these uncertain times. This event is an opportunity for members of the college community to consider how we can apply what Jake has learned from the personal challenges he has faced to our current situation. If you missed the online event you can watch a recording here Jake Bailey Jake Bailey is the ex-Christchurch Boys’ High School senior monitor, whose end of year speech made worldwide headlines after going viral in November 2015. A week before he was due to deliver this speech, Jake fell ill and was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, the fastest growing cancer known to man. Jake was given 2 weeks to live if this was left untreated. He persevered through to make his speech to his school, and the video of this went on to touch the hearts of tens of millions and drew support from across the globe. Since being announced in remission in January 2016, Jake has gone on to share his experiences, his story, and the things he has learnt that have given him clarity throughout his journey, in the hopes of helping others facing their own difficulties. He has been speaking full-time for over 2 years now, and has presented several hundred speeches across about three dozen cities, to tens of thousands of people, audiences of 3 people and audiences of 3,000 people, aged from 8 to 80 years old. While based on the Gold Coast full time, he travels most weeks for these presentations. He is the author of the #1 Bestselling book, ‘What Cancer Taught Me’, a weekly columnist for the NZ Herald, and the subject of the documentary ‘The Common Touch’. He scored three game-winners, with those coming against Creighton, Houston Baptist and Louisville. Johnston, a team captain, was drafted No. 11 overall in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft by Nashville SC after the season. The economics major totaled 11 points on three goals and five assists from the right back position, and earned the honor for the second-straight year. In his first year as a starter, Pannenberg posted nine solo shutouts and a .758 save percentage while conceding 0.72 goals per game, a top 15 mark in the nation. He is pursuing a degree in communications. Parente finished second on the squad with seven assists, also adding a goal for nine total points.
