Wellingtonians are being asked to share their thoughts on the proposal from the Fale Trust to build a Fale Malae on the south-west corner of Frank Kitts Park.

A cultural asset building -v- lost inner-city green space - what do you think?

What do you think about a Fale being built on Frank Kitts Park - would it be a cultural asset or a lost part of the city’s waterfront green space?

Why think about this?

This is a really important decision for inner-city residents, particularly, because we don’t live in leafy suburbs with a garden, and berms and pavements at the end of our drive. And we don’t have big nearby public playing fields like many of our outer neighbourhoods.

No plans, but they love it anyway

There was a night of magical thinking last Thursday when Wellington City Councillors debated the proposal to support a new building on the open green waterfront lawn of Frank Kitts Park. It was led by mayor Andy Foster, who said the fale maele proposal was “a magical concept, with the potential to be a great meeting place.” But it’s impossible to understand how he knows this, because there are no plans – not even a concept drawing – for anyone to see. Nothing. Perhaps Andy was looking into a crystal ball.

Fale Malae

Wellington’s Waterfront is going to be quite full, or so it seems. Yesterday the WCC agreed in principle to the proposed Fale Malae being proposed for the waterfront, or at least for them to go forward to the next phase of planning. This is the same Fale that was proposed for a site up near Parliament (on Bunny St, between the Victoria School of Law in the old Government Buildings, and the VUW Business School in Rutherford House). Evidently someone has ruled that the parliamentary site was unsuitable, and so Frank Kitts Park has been proposed instead.
