It’s been almost a year since the rebranding, opening of the visitor’s centre and hefty ticket price increases at the Karori Sanctuary, now know as Zealandia (brand guidelines be damned – I refuse to use all caps).

Many households over Wellington will have got a letter from the council this week asking if they would like their regular green recycling bin to be replaced with a 140 litre wheelie bin (or plastic recycling bags if you’re property isn’t “accessible”).

To:Protect and maintain our green belt and our other reserves and green spacesActively promote the use of facilities at Zealandia and Otari-Wilton Bush to teach Wellingtonians about our natural heritageMake sure Wellington’s public buildings and public spaces have architectural value – I like the way sculptures are scattered round WellingtonConstruct and maintain in public ownership water, stormwater and sewage facilities that have minimal negative impact on our surroundingsEnsure every part of the city is served with adequate waste disposal and the best feasible recycling facilitiesEncourage a reduction in carbon emissions wherever feasibleDevelop district plans that enhance our natural and built environments and provide facilities that allow Wellingtonians and their communities to thrive – and stick to them save in exceptional circumstancesSee that all new buildings and renovations are well constructedProvide an infrastructure that allows people to get around the city easily and safely by public or private transport , walking, jogging, cycling or runningMaintain effective noise control

Why I voted against Mayor Prendergast for Local Government New Zealand

The position of president of Local Government New Zealand is too important to be held by a peak oil denier. That is why I would not support Mayor Prendergast in her bid for the position. Peak oil is the most serious issue that we face on a local and global level. I made that clear while the Dompost reporter was recording proceedings. Furthermore, the mayor has shown nothing of the balancing qualities needed in a democratic role. Democracy is much bigger than one person getting their way. Majority rule is always to be balanced with minority protection and sharing the benefits.Bryan Pepperell Wellington City Councillor for Southern
