Statues or Fun?

So, $350 000 for a statue that will be passe in a couple of years. One of those statues like the Queen Victoria ones that cities try to fob off on each other. Yet, those events that help to make Wellington a great place to live or visit like the Cuba Street Carnival and the Newtown Fair can't be held for lack of money. How absurd!

In this high-tech world, there is a new trend emerging in Lower Hutt. People from all walks of life are rediscovering a simpler time and simple pleasures like freshly baked bread, homemade preserves and freshly grown vegetables. As well as saving money, they are reducing their impact on the planet too.

Wellington is facing rising sea levels

At the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee briefing of December 1 we were shown a computer model of the areas of Wellington that would be flooded by sea level rise as a consequence of global warming. One of the areas that may be impacted is the site of the Indoor Sports Centre. There is no doubt there will be consequences that will be beyond our control even if Wellington were to reduce green house gas emissions.

A press release from the New Zealand Police today revealed community constables are going to be working with Tranz-Metro and talking to commuters about problems in their areas, while in transit on the train. If this is what the police is going to do with their "precious" resources we need to build a railway station in Newtown!

Save the point has won in the environment court

In 2000 I began one of my longest political battles . Yesterday it finished in the Environment Court with a ruling that the South Coast is not an appropriate place for an Aquarium. In that time I was supported only by Cr David Zwartz. In 2004 I was joined by Cr Jack Ruben in my opposition. This proposal divided the community. While the political battle was raging and we were overwhelmed by a developer friendly Council, Save Te Rae Kai Hau Point was formed. It was this group that in the end won the day.

Recently I said at a Council meeting that it was predictable to see that the Wellington City Council has learnt nothing from the recent petrol price rises.
