Harcourts - Court says no to demolition

Great news today that the Environment Court has for the second time said no to demolishing the Harcourts building on Lambton Quay.

The decision just made public essentially has vindicated the Council position: that our District Plan sets a high bar for demolishing heritage buildings and that in this case, the bar was not reached.

Interestingly, the Court also found no fundamental conflict between the operation of the Building and Resource Management Acts and found that leaving the building standing would not fundamentally compromise public safety.

Is the ugliest building in Wellington?

Great news that NZ owned TSB Bank has signed for another 10 year sponsorship deal for the Arena on the waterfront but I do think this is the worst building in the city - monolithic, no architectural merit, still do not know how it got oonsent.

Needs a wrecking ball through it and a redesign.

Today, I felt optimistic as I sat in a room of property developers and other related professionals to talk about the future of the Northern end of the CBD including a small part of Thorndon, there was no talk of flyovers, denial of climate change and the inequality that exists througout the world.

A really positive earthquake strengthening story of a heritage building

This made me smile today, a great story in The Dom talking about the restoration of the substation on Kate Sheppard Place which is earthquake prone. A great example of how our precious heritage can be strengthened for its next life. Photo courtesy of The Dominion Post

Always enjoy a walk around Kelburn and nice to be there as part of the St Michael's Village fair. Took photos of these two buildings on the way home. One a good example of some fine public architecture, the other a good example of how to do a house extension well.
