Just Cuba Street
    • CubaDupa presents GO HOME STAY HOME
      • CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home, a Live-Streamed Musical Happening Wellington festival set to unite the community through virtual music festival   Following the cancellation of CubaDupa, the festival team have been working on a remedy—a virtual way to celebrate the creativity and community that would have taken over Cuba Street on the 28th and 29th March, with over 1500 artists and 450 performances throughout Wellington’s favourite precinct. And so, Go Home Stay Home – a live-streamed virtual festival has been arranged to keep you smiling through week four of lockdown with a selection of the CubaDupa 2020 artists. Festival Director Gerry Paul says “This is a way of keeping the CubaDupa fire burning until we next hit the streets. And it’s a time when the creativity and talent of our artists are playing such an important part in keeping us sane and inspired – so tune in and come together in solidarity – he waka eke noa!” The programme for Go Home Stay Home may be on a micro scale compared to the monumental street festival, but you can expect it to be bursting with the same energy and vibrancy CubaDupa is known for.    On Saturday 18 April from 5 pm, settle in for an evening of sweet tunes from fresh local artists alongside well-loved homegrown acts, streaming live on the CubaDupa Facebook page. Auckland alt-pop-rock band Ha the Unclear will join us from the comfort of their bubble, along with Miss June who will treat the audience to a solo set—a rare occurrence for the noisy, energetic punk rock four-piece. After a two year stint in London, Wellington rapper Name UL is back, along with the always engaging Same Name Confusion, synth-maestro Dayle Jellyman, dream pop songwriter Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant and rising alt-pop artist RIIKI. Usually a band of seven musicians, Dr Reknaw will present a special stripped back solo set, and Maori world-roots performer Māmā Mihirangi will also perform solo. The Ping Pong Party People will wrap up the night with a 90s trance party that’ll scratch your dancing itch. A special thanks goes to WellingtonNZ and the Wellington City Council for their support on this initiative and making Go Home Stay Home possible. CubaDupa is encouraging viewers to donate to MusicHelps, the New Zealand charity that provides vital support to members of the New Zealand music community in times of illness, distress and hardship. There will be a donate button on the Go Home Stay Home live stream for viewers to contribute to MusicHelps. CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home will be free to watch on the CubaDupa Facebook page from 5:00 pm NZST Saturday 18 April. Here is the schedule: Ha the Unclear 5:00 PM 5:20 PM Māmā Mihirangi 5:30 PM 5:50 PM Dayle Jellyman 6:00 PM 6:20 PM Same Name Confusion 6:30 PM 6:50 PM Name UL 7:00 PM 7:20 PM KITA 7:30 PM 7:50 PM Dr Reknaw 8:00 PM 8:20 PM Miss June 8:30 PM 8:50 PM RIIKI 9:00 PM 9:20 PM Ping Pong Party People 9:30 PM 9:45 PM For quick access to our artist pages, click the following link. https://linktr.ee/cubadupa To head straight to the CubaDupa facebook page for live streaming, click the following link. • DANKE!!
      • Well, I did tell you that Record Store Day 2019 would be something special…! (pic by Tim Gruar) I mean, at that stage there was only the suggestion that blimmin’ Kurt Vile might be joining us, and we didn’t know for sure until we got a call that he and the Violators were on their way from the airport, having played 2 sold out shows in Auckland, and ahead of another sold out show here in Wellington. And it NEARLY didn’t happen, but we are so glad it did – and if you were here, good for you – it really was quite amazing to have one the most singular and unique voices in modern songwriting playing for us all here on this special day. He and his band and management were absolutely delightful, huge music fans, and KV even stuck around to sign albums and pose for pics, for which we are hugely grateful and humbled. (pic by Tim Gruar) We also enjoyed terrific sets from ex-Slow Boater/ Chill/ Verlaine Caroline Easther, who ran through some fine songs from her debut solo album, “Lucky”, with her wingman, guitar ace Alan Galloway, along with ‘Friend Of Slow Boat’ Lawrence Arabia, who shared some choice selections from his brilliant new album “Singles Club” (which may just be his finest hour yet…) (pic by Tim Gruar) So finally – can we just say a huge thankyou to everyone who made the 13th so special – to PJ who always designs us the most beautiful posters, to Ziggy from San Fran, soundguy extraordinaire Bernie Gruschow, the good people at Music Planet, Drunken Piano Touring, our suppliers, especially Universal, Rhythmethod and Southbound, to Kurt, Caroline and James/ Lawrence for the wonderful live entertainment – and finally, to you guys, the punters, some of whom queued in the cold from early in the morning to get your mitts on limited RSD collectables, and were, without exception, some of the friendliest, most enthusiastic and genuine music lovers we have encountered. The whole day felt more than just a little magical, which is more than you could reasonably expect, right…?! Give us a year to recover, and we’ll see if we can’t do it all over again, huh?! • RECORD STORE DAY 2019 AT SLOW BOAT!!!
      • Howdy, all – well, it’s nearing that time of year again, when we spend a day celebrating ourselves, and you, theoretically, get the treats!! Record Store Day 2019 at Slow Boat on the 13th of April is shaping up as one of our best yet – and that’s no idle threat, when in the past it has involved instore performances from Dave Dobbyn, Neil Finn, Anika Moa, David Kilgour, Tiny Ruins, Julia Deans, and many more musical luminaries. We will also, all things being equal, have a whole swag of limited RSD vinyl releases, plus the usual lollies, giveaways, and good vibrations! And while I realise that many have been critical of it as an event, suggesting it has become over-commercialised, is too busy, and rains on your regular Saturday vinyl-trawling buzz, spare a thought for those who are new to the game – the celebration of physical media, the culture of independent record stores, and the community that springs up around the simple, pleasurable act of flipping through vinyl records (or CDs, or DVDs, or even, God forbid, TAPES…!) , and finding something you can love and clutch to your heart. Maybe you will meet someone you share a passion for Yes with, and fall madly in love, or start a band, or make a lifelong friend… you just never know!! We are proud of our place in the Wellington musical landscape – of the relationships we have forged with people who share our love of music, and records, and the mystique that still surrounds music, and to this end we would love it if you were to come celebrate with us on the day – or any other day, for that matter, if you’d prefer. As ever, with the limited releases, no pre-orders, no holds, and while we have ordered a whole bunch of things, we don’t know what we will actually get until the day – opening the doors an hour early than usual at 9am, and having a queue building is a total delight, and we look forward to sharing details of the day soon. We are pretty psyched, that’s all I’m gonna say at this point…! So, stay tuned – we’ll let you know when there is news, and hope to see you here on the 13th of April to celebrate with us!!! xxx THE SLOW BOAT CREW xxx

    • Fresh start
      • Meh. Bygones. I’m over it. What Wellington needs now, and seems very good at providing it, is a fresh start on an old street corner, and the corner of Abel Tasman and Cuba Street seems just the right place to do that. Wandering around this slightly forsaken part of town the other night, I hadn’t really realized just how funky and vibrant a mere street corner renovation can be. It’s not down to any particular governmental, or council idealistic drive, but just a simple effort by local entrepreneurs who want to make a difference.

    • The city chocolate fix
      • Hurray, another guest post from Heather at Foodie Gems of Wellie Where to go in the city for a quality chocolate fix between usual excuses – chocolate festivals, Valentines, Easter, Xmas, national chocolate day, your birthday, your best friend’s birthday, White Day in Japan, Chocolate Dipped Fruit and Fondue day in the US (hmmm, any others?)? Follow me, and know that the calories will go straight out the bottom of your legs if walking… Start at Bohemein Fresh Chocolates, 109 Featherston Street (unless it’s Sunday and then start at the Esque stand at the City Market in the Chaffers Building).  A two-bite sensory experience of fresh ingredients, no preservatives, and interesting flavours.  To be eaten within 2-3 weeks if you take some away and can hold out that long. Try the award-winning Sea Salt Caramel. Call past Kirkaldie and Stain’s gourmet shop to pick up your favourite Schoc tablet.  The Xmasy Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold is all go again. Pop into The Chocolate Cake Company in Capital on the [Lambton] Quay (a mouthful in more ways than one!) to order a take-home dense and delicious chocolate mud cake for sharing.  To appease the guilt of hogging out all day by yourself.  Unless its Sunday, and then order online once home and you’ve licked away any telltale chocolate moustache. The next stop should be Tempt Cupcakes in the Old Bank Arcade (front corner of Smiths The Grocer) to see if you can resist a Chocolate Caramel or Traditional Moist Chocolate Cake creation.  Just beautiful to behold. As you stroll up Willis Street, stop by Butlers Chocolates near the Manners corner.  Whilst not a local producer, they offer some nicely packaged goodies for Xmas stockings, and have a delightfully sunny afternoon upstairs balcony for a wee chocolatey rest if required. For the regularly-voted best hot chocolate in the city, proceed to Scopa on the corner of Cuba and Ghuznee Streets.  One of those experiences that just simply should be on your bucket list.  Although the shot size is very cute, go for the regular at least.  If you’re gonna do it, do it thoroughly. I’d suggest a sit down in a dark quiet room by about now, so loop around to lower Taranaki Street and Hashigo Zake (downstairs below Zibibbo), and order up a Rogue Chocolate Stout.  And if you’re hungry, one of Hashigo Zake’s famed gourmet pies to go with it. And for a dessert finale, uplift your stomach and meander along to Matterhorn opposite the bucket fountain in Cuba Street, and order up the Eight Textures of Chocolate ‘Thai Style’.  A clever and delicious finish. From here there are a range of buses and taxis nearby, who will take your chocolate-satisfied self wherever you need to go….

    • Whither Cuba?
      • Gosh – that was a surprise! Our venerated local broadsheet, el Domino Postale, appears to have gone and written an excellent, thoughtful article on what we need to do with Cuba St. Have they got a new reporter perhaps, one who is actually interested in matters more important than cute doggies or cats stuck up trees? There is hope, at least – keep an eye out on Nikki McDonald. The article raises some serious points, which I think that we have also raised before – what to do with a street whose charm lies in it’s eclectic collection of semi derelict buildings?

    • Rasa Malaysia – top eats near the top’o Cuba
      • Over the past couple of months I have been reviewing Malaysian restaurants all around Wellington for Malaysia Kitchen (full disclosure – I got refunded some of the costs). It’s time to share the reviews! A freezing southerly was blowing around Wellington when I met with a group of friends at Rasa Malaysia on Upper Cuba Street, pushing all thoughts of trying something new out of my mind. The weather meant I had to have my favourite laksa.

Now we have dispensed with the usual sarcasm, please enjoy this beautiful video by Ro Tierney of the snow in Cuba Mall. Snow on Cuba Mall in central Wellington (HD) from Ro Tierney on Vimeo.
