wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I arrived at the police station. The others were waiting. I got into the waiting patrol car, and buckled up. I was going out on community patrol in Naenae.

Community patrols work alongside police to build safer communities, providing an extra set of eyes and ears. We drove a random route but to some set areas, through schools, up alleyways behind businesses, making sure the streets were safe and providing a visual deterrent for tagging and other crime.

Crime statistics released today show Wellington Police District's total recorded crime in the 2009 calendar year has remained at similar levels to 2008.

There was an increase of less than 1 percent in recorded crime for the year ending 31 December 2009 compared to the previous year.
Newtown: it's sometimes more than a bit shit

On Wednesday night, our next door neighbours were burgled.

It's times like this that I need to be reassured of the good things in Newtown. Things like:

    * The otters at the zoo!
    * The haloumi at Cafe Kialis
    * The macademia & chicken salad at Baobob

What are your favourite things about Newtown right now?
