Let’s be less rubbish about waste – have your say pronto!
- Talk Wellington
- This one almost got away on us: the Wellington Regional Waste Management and Minimisation Plan needs your shove – closing Friday 5pm! There’s a lot of good intention in there and it’s badly needed. We are a bit rubbish about waste in New Zealand, including Wellington region. At the Southern Landfill, which has probably the...

Ika Rere
- Eye of the Fish
- It’s wonderful to see that the dreams of East by West Ferries have come true, with the launching of the Ika Rere, the brand new electric ferry that will ply its way from Wellington to Eastbourne and back. It is a striking design, with the twin prows of the catamaran almost vertical for chopping through the waves of the harbour, and a vibrant acqua / turquoise colour scheme all over, tying in with the branding of Meridian, electric company / weather forecast sponsor.

FOMI work trip – 20-22 March 2020 – bird hide seating, picnic table, flax weevils
- Friends of Mana Island
- At the time of writing this report New Zealand will go into lockdown to minimise the spread of coronavirus, at midnight tonight. This trip is likely to be our last for some time. Nine people participated in a very productive weekend with all tasks completed. Fewer numbers allowed greater distance between volunteers in the bedrooms. […]

No evidence that stoats have impacted on Kapiti Island’s birds
- Te Papa's blog
- Kapiti Island is one of New Zealand’s premier bird sanctuaries. It is home to nationally important populations of little spotted kiwi, kaka, North Island saddleback, stitchbird and North Island robin, as well as other threatened bird species. The island was considered to be free of all introduced mammal pests after rats were eradicated in 1996. [...]

Iceberg hits Welllington
- The Sidestrip
- A fake 'iceberg' in Wellington's Oriental Bay the other day was made by special effects wizards Weta for a Climate change stunt. The object, which appears to be made of polystyrene or a similar material, is between the Carter Fountain and the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Eyes Wide Open for Climate change
- The Sidestrip
- Today, August 12th at 1pm, hundreds of New Zealanders paused for five minutes with woolly hats over their eyes. We then lifted our hats together, showing that we will not have the wool pulled over our eyes about the possibilities for real action on climate change.

Super Fry

- Stephen Fry, actor, author, wit and geek, is on his way to dear sweet Wellington and we are rather excited! He's coming to Aotearoa New Zealand to film some bits for a BBC series he's presenting, Another Chance To See, where he's travelling the world, checking up on endangered species. While he's in Wellington, he'll be visiting the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary to see how the kakapo is doing (rather

Hot theatre
- The Wellingtonista
- BATS Theatre's new play Heat starts this Friday, and has been selling itself on an unusual point: "eco-theatre". The show's lights and sound will be completely off-grid, and the preparations for the sustainable energy sources were visible over the weekend. Such a ploy could come across as gimmicky, but it's designed to mimic the constraints of its setting, an Antarctic survival capsule.

The Greens: recyclers extraordinaire
- The Wellingtonista
- This particular Wellingtonista was just down at a protest taking place at the Greater Wellington Regional Council offices. Of course, the GWRC transport plans (PDF) are well worth protesting about: more roads, no light rail? Despite the hundreds (and the great majority) of submissions asking for the opposite?

We've been judged
- Texture
- The new Lonely Planet New Zealand guide, released last week caused a bit of controversy through New Zealand. Pointing out our weird and tacky rural icons and urban landmarks such as Auckland's Skytower, which the book says looks like a giant hypodermic needle giving a fix to the heavens and describing Wellington's Stonehenge Aotearoa as weird and tacky were some of the funnier and light hearted parts of the book. The rest of it lavishes praise on the country's beauty, but urges New Zealand's tourism industry to protect its ‘green' status. Most important, though, is that Wellington gets talked up well."If your New Zealand travels thus far have been all bout wilderness and lonesome, one-horse towns, rock into Wellington for a big-city hit. Art-house cinema, hip bars, designer boutiques, live music rooms and late-night coffee shops - it's all in ‘Windy Welly'." The book also tells visitors to check out the local museums sample the good coffee and quality beer and make the most of the wind with a lesson in sailboarding or kiteboarding. It also says to check out rare and endangered NZ wildlife at Wellington's Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. -Stacey

It ain't easy being Green (Cabs)
- The Wellingtonista
- Our favourite cab company has expanded to Auckland and Christchurch and are doing pretty well in both. But it's not all expansion and increasing profits. Recently the eco-friendly cab company has had to defend itself against statements from the head of the Taxi Federation. Then they had to fend off claims from other taxi companies (Combined in this case) that they were also "green".

Why I voted against Mayor Prendergast for Local Government New Zealand
- Bryan Pepperell - Back To The Future
- The position of president of Local Government New Zealand is too important to be held by a peak oil denier. That is why I would not support Mayor Prendergast in her bid for the position. Peak oil is the most serious issue that we face on a local and global level. I made that clear while the Dompost reporter was recording proceedings. Furthermore, the mayor has shown nothing of the balancing qualities needed in a democratic role. Democracy is much bigger than one person getting their way. Majority rule is always to be balanced with minority protection and sharing the benefits.Bryan Pepperell Wellington City Councillor for Southern

Turn OFF your lights - 8-9pm tomorrow (Saturday)
- The Wellingtonista
- Support the Earth Hour initiative tomorrow (Sat 28th) and turn off your lights between 8pm-9pm. But it will be dark! I know ... fun eh!? Light candles, play spooky games (I recommend Werewolf) or tell ghost stories - in essence HAVE FUN! And it's not just about the lights, that's the minimum. If you can turn off anything else then do so - how about turning off the computer!!!
