Record store day 2024 at slow boat!!!
- Slow Boat Records
- Slow Boat is again thrilled to share with you our plans for Record Store Day 2024!! After the success of last year’s event, we have again agreed to co-ordinate with our dear neighbours at 173 Cuba Street, the venerable Flying Nun Records, so that there won’t be any clashes for our respective instore performances, which we are thrilled to announce thus; Flying Nun; 1pm – Living Clipboards – featuring Marineville’s Mark Williams, along with Ghost Club’s Denise Roughan and Jim Abbot – their “All Over Tawa” album is released on the day! Slow Boat; 2pm – Bleeding Star – fresh from the previous weekend’s Otisfest event at San Fran, the excellent Poneke/ Wellington indie guitar band will present their songs in a stripped back, largely acoustic fashion. Flying Nun; 3pm – Cruelly – grungy, punky, shoegazy? Who can say – what it is is life affirming, melodic noise from this young Wellington band – come check it out! Slow Boat; 4pm – Erny Belle (duo) - after the success of her superb second album (on the Flying Nun label), the Tamaki Makaurau/ Auckland based singer songwriter will perform in a duo setting – can’t wait!! We will also be opening at the earlier time of 9am (to give the eager beaver/ early bird RSD queuers an hour less to wait!), and will be bringing you an array of limited RSD vinyl exclusives for your delectation – you know the drill; no holds, no reserves - first in, best fed!! Thoroughly looking forward to what has become a real highlight of the record shop calendar, and to a day where we celebrate vinyl, music, and the culture of the independent record store!! 2024!!

- Bloody hell, it's another year, already!! Welcome to it, everyone, and let us start by offering our sincerest thanks to you all for helping make it a busy and memorable one for us all here at The Boat - so many people must have gotten vinyl, and CDs, and vouchers, and tee shirts, and posters and all manner of Slow Boat goodies for Christmas, and that means more people listening to and loving music, and that can only be a good thing, right?! Thanks, also, for your patience in bearing with us with reduced hours and staff in the Xmas/ New Year period - all pretty much back to normal now (just as the Summer really arrives - typical, huh?!) ANYWAY - enjoying meeting folks from around the motu, and indeed around the globe, and helping people find the music they connect with - redeeming those vouchers seems like a swell time to me...! So - all the very best to you, your friends and whanau for 2024, looking forward to continuing to serve you up the platters that matter (have just topped up a HEAP of new vinyl that we sold out of over Xmas!), and to bringing the joy - a few things in the pipeline (not least of which being Record Store Day '24!), will let you know when plans firm up... If you’re a big film fan, or have lived nearby, you’ve probably stopped into the Aro St Video Shop (at least until you got Netflix). Since opening the doors in 1989, proprietor Andrew Armitage has amassed a whopping 27,000 titles. The shop, and the similarly-sized Alice DVD Library in Christchurch, have the largest movie collections in the country, with many titles unavailable elsewhere in New Zealand or even via the internet.

Record Store Day 2022 at Slow Boat!!

- Well, with all the disruption and distraction of the last few years now (hopefully!) largely behind us, Slow Boat is thrilled to share our plans for Record Store Day 2022 - this year taking place on just the one Saturday, the 23rd of April (a week after Easter!) As usual, we will be looking to serve up a tasty array of the limited edition RSD vinyl releases – we have done what we can to order in what we think might be of interest, and it is now in the lap of the gods/ vinyl manufacturing plants/ freight firms/ couriers – godspeed, people! We are also utterly thrilled to announce we will be joined by a couple of our favourite artists for instore performances – namely; Vera Ellen Having released the wonderful “It’s Your Birthday” on the iconic Flying Nun imprint last year, Vera has garnered some excellent reviews with what is a clever and charming collection of songs, and a real grower. Vera will perform instore at 2pm Luke Buda Dear friend of the ‘Boat, and Phoenix Foundation mainstay and co-frontman Buda last year released his long overdue third solo album, the eponymously titled “BUDA”; a wonderfully reflective collection of songs that ponder our place in the world, getting older, getting along – which wound up on a lot of people’s ‘best of the year’ lists. Given that he was denied the opportunity to tour it (TWICE!) by that blimmin’ Covid, we are thrilled that Luke and violin maestro Anita Clark (aka Motte) have agreed to perform for us here instore at around 3pm. We will have plenty of copies of both artists’ albums, and they will be happy to sign for you at the conclusion of their performances. We will also have the odd spot prize and giveaway, as well as some lollies and other goodies, and will be opening at the earlier time of 9am, just to make the wait for those eager beavers outside just a little shorter. No reserves, no holds on the limited releases, please mask up, and please be patient and considerate of others – we want everyone to have a great day - can’t wait to see you all! Taylor Hawkins RIP

- Terribly sad news through in the weekend of the passing of Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins - especially in the wake of the news that they were to tour NZ in December (our prize draw for tickets will now, obviously, not be taking place) - a monster drummer, who once popped into the store (and asked if he could use our bathroom!), he seemed like a hell of a nice guy, and Slow Boat sends our very deepest condolences to his bandmates, friends and family.
