Free Walking Solution- Hataitai to CBD

Would more people walk to work or school from the Eastern suburbs if they didn’t have to use the dark, crowded, loud and smelly Mt Victoria tunnel? Here’s the idea: can WCC and GWRC work together to give walkers a free trip from one side of the Hataitai bus tunnel to the other?Once the bus system is up and running with a bit of spare capacity, think what a boon that could be for walkers.

Hataitai Tunnel To Be Bus Only

Should buses only be allowed to use Wellington’s Mt Vic bus tunnel, which runs between Pirie Street in Mt Victoria and Waitoa Road,Hataitai?
It’s been a hotly debated issue – just like Auckland’s debate about when cars should be allowed to use Grafton Bridge.

Positive Meeting with Go Wellington

Good progress has been made with Go Wellington in an effort to resolve the issue of out-of-service buses using the Pirie Street bus tunnel.According to the Greater Wellington Council bylaw, only scheduled services that have been registered with the Council may use the tunnel. At a meeting convened by GWRC, Go Wellington acknowledged that there was an imperfect understanding of the rules by some drivers, and undertook to educate staff better.

A Mural for the Tunnel

The Pirie Street bus tunnel has long been a magnet for graffiti, and in an effort to help make the area more attractive the Council is considering commissioning a mural. The design concept can be seen above, and has been designed by Robert Stewart.
