LGWM: The Gauntlet

Hi fishes. Well the LGWM thing was announced supporting the big, most expensive package. As you know I got my issues, discussed in 3-Big-Flaws here. Thought I’d come back and address a few bonus thoughts. First up: The Gauntlet Tunnel.

To recap. The selected package aims for trams to Island Bay, frustratingly bypassing Newtown, and a busway to Kilbirnie and Miramar frustratingly attached to a new highway tunnel.

On the buses

I hesitate to even bother to post this, as the topic seems so small and the problem is so easily solved, but apparently the Busdriver’s Tramways Union has been “in discussions” for over 18 months on this topic, and they still don’t have an answer.

Jesus wept. The incompetence of people in charge! It is all very solvable, for the price of less than $20.

Present situation – with intolerably reflective white surfaces inside
The problem, dear reader, is that the new buses, apparently only the electrically powered new buses, are “dangerous” at night as there are too many reflections, caused by bright lights inside the new buses, and the driver cannot safely see the road.

It’s wonderful to see that the dreams of East by West Ferries have come true, with the launching of the Ika Rere, the brand new electric ferry that will ply its way from Wellington to Eastbourne and back. It is a striking design, with the twin prows of the catamaran almost vertical for chopping through the waves of the harbour, and a vibrant acqua / turquoise colour scheme all over, tying in with the branding of Meridian, electric company / weather forecast sponsor.

What is the Cycling network based upon? It’s a bit of a quandary to me, because while in the online discussion form the WCC the other day, the designers were claiming that they had been studying the situation for years, looking which areas to link to which other areas, and this was the first time that they had gone to the step of actually showing Roads linking them.

Firstly, one you may not have been aware of: the proposal by KiwiRail and InterIslander to build new terminus stations in both Picton and Wellington, in order to tie in with the arrival of two new ferries due here in three years time. You can find out more about this proposal here. I’m not sure when they want the feedback by, but I’m sure that they want some feedback!

LGWM: 3 Big Flaws

Hi all. It’s been a long time since I’ve posted (feels like it could be ten years). But I’m back to raise some major flaws with the LGWM plans because this has been a near and dear subject to me over the past 20 years. None of these flaws appear to be necessary compromises forced by cost or other constraints. And it appears we could fix them without additional cost. If we do fix them, we’ll have a much better transit network for Wellington. We won’t get a shot to do this over, so we should do it right.

Lets Get Wellington Leaking

We’ve been waiting for years for this and although it is not yet official, at long last we are seeing some progress. This was a scoop leaked by the Dom Post – and I’m keen to know more, so I’m posting it up here. While I’m sure that LGWM have gone through millions of alternatives, and fully evaluated tham and argued endlessly over them, for the last several years, this is the first time we’ve seen anything concrete.

Station to Station

Wellington’s main (only?) central Railway Station has been getting a lot of press recently, mostly over the intransigence of the Heritage NZ lobby who are, to be honest, being silly over the heritage of this building. They’ve only just today approved the installation of a pedestrian ramp out the front doors – the disabled have been forced to use the side door for the last several decades. They’re sitting on the approval of installation of the Snapper ticketing terminals because they don’t like the colour. KiwiRail: do it anyway. It needs to be a living piece of heritage, adapting and changing to the times – not preserved in aspic (whatever aspic is).

You may already be aware of this world-breaking event, but in case you are not, here’s the news: LGWM have actually made a decision! Of course, now having made a decision, they now want to ask us our opinion on their momentous decision. So, this post, the topic of discussion is all about the proposed Cobham Drive crossing. Seeing as their method of discussion is all behind closed doors (they are calling for submissions by the end of July), I though that it might be more useful to have some discussion in public, and the Eye of the Fish seems to be a good place to discuss that.

Pedestrianisation

The Golden Mile is going to be pedestrianised – and that is great news. Great news to me, great news for Wellingtonians, great news for visitors to our city if they ever return, but apparently some of the retailers along Lambton Quay feel that this is not great news. I’m not sure why – nobody in their right mind tries to drive to their favourite retailer in Wellington at the moment, so I’m not sure why they would in the future.
