Hark, hark the art

- THE noise that Wellington’s newest sculpture makes “is halfway between a hum and a whistle”, says Sculpture Trust chairman Neil Plimmer. Akau Tangi, (the sighing sound of the wind) created by renowned artist Phil Dadson, is the fifth and final installation in the $750,000, 10 years in-the-making, Meridian Wind Sculpture Walkway.

- ‘The New Zealand Netherlands Society had a sculpture on the waterfront once. It was unveiled by Queen Beatrix when visiting Wellington. Because of vandalism it had to be moved indoors. Good luck with that.’

Islands on the wharf

- SILVER trees have sprung up between Circa Theatre and Te Papa this week. Called Green Islands, the sculptures were designed by Wellington artist Regan Gentry as part of the Wellington Four Plinths Sculpture Project.

Controversial waterfront sculpture

Forest by the sea

- IT took three days for a forest to spring up along Cobham Drive. However it is not a natural forest of leaves and branches but man-made. Called Wellington Urban Forest, it is a sculpture by Dutch artist Leon van den Eijkel and it looks like a giant child’s toy building blocks.

Win(d)spired

- CLOUDS “scudding” over the bay in Wellington inspired Len Lye to design the Water Whirler. The sculpture, to be installed in Frank Kitts Park on March 7, was built by the Len Lye Foundation, a non-profit society which acts to conserve, reproduce and promote the works of the late Kiwi artist and filmmaker.

Millennium project nearly completed

- BACK in the days when some people fretted about the Y2K bug, others were planning projects to mark the new millennium. One of those projects is set to get under way, six years later. Construction of kinetic artist Len Lye’s Water Whirler in Frank Kitts Park will commence in the week after Waitangi Day, says Wellington Sculpture Trust chairman Neil Plimmer.
