Their draft policy for the city’s social housing service describes a vision of affordable and safe accommodation for Wellingtonians in need. It also provides details on the Housing Upgrade Project (HUP) with Housing New Zealand.

Few Rights for Boarding House Tenants

- Some boarding houses in Wellington appear to be cashing in on big events in the city by evicting their residents at short notice to make room for out-of-town visitors. Downtown Community Ministry is aware of three instances where tenants have been given less than a day to vacate because their room was to be let to someone else.

- “More like a private home than a rental” is what many tenants are saying about the pensioner units that Compassion Housing manage in central Upper Hutt, Wellington. The Sisters of Compassion purchased all of the Upper Hutt City Council’s pensioner unit’s way back in June 2000.

- With Wellington City Council holding a design competition on modernising its housing units Downtown Community Ministry thought it’d ask some clients for their input. “Overwhelmingly we were told that people wanted flats that were light and dry. Things like insulation to keep them warmer throughout winter were at the top of the list,” says Community Outreach Worker Kate Bell.

Council’s Liquor Bylaw Amendment Fails to Consider Key Issues

- As submissions close today on the proposed amendment to Wellington City Council’s Liquor Control Bylaw, Downtown Community Ministry says effective options are still available to address the issue. Downtown Community Ministry Director Stephanie McIntyre says, “We remain unconvinced that enough evidence exists to support this amendment especially when tried and true options used elsewhere have not been explored.”
