After just eight years of occasional and then weekly worship in and around the scattered settlement of Eastbourne, the local Church of England committee was poised to begin building the first Anglican church in the district.

I loved it, because it was really fun!’ For two hours each day, an amazing team of leaders helped the children use boxes and b

- With Wellington City Council holding a design competition on modernising its housing units Downtown Community Ministry thought it’d ask some clients for their input. “Overwhelmingly we were told that people wanted flats that were light and dry. Things like insulation to keep them warmer throughout winter were at the top of the list,” says Community Outreach Worker Kate Bell.

FAITH COSTS …
- 31 Oct 2008
- Karori Baptist Church
- Barnabas Fund, a Christian ministry which seeks to support, help and encourage Christians who suffer discrimination, oppression and persecution as a consequence of their faith, has invited churches to designate one Sunday in November as ”Suffering Church Sunday”, and on that day to think about and pray for believers who suffer and even die because of their love for Jesus. That will be our focus in our services this morning. Imagine being fined for the “crime” of holding a Christian worship service in your home - and the fine for your first offence being the equivalent of 10 times the average wage for a month. That’s happening right now in Uzbekistan. Imagine having a powerful dream that convinced you that Jesus was real, and choosing to follow Him, and as a result experiencing a miraculous healing of a condition you’d suffered from for 16 years - and then your husband throwing you and your 8 children out of the house because of your new faith, and having nowhere to live and no way of feeding or caring for yourself or your children. That happened recently to a West African woman. Imagine being given low grades or failed in exams, simply because you were a Christian; this happens regularly in countries like Egypt and Pakistan. And in Burma, Christian parents are promised education for their children if they will convert to Buddhism. These things are happening to our Christian brothers and sisters. It is important that we remember them, pray for them, and support them in whatever practical ways we can. To find out more, check out the Barnabas Fund website: www.barnabasfund.org

From Andrew’s desk
- 3 Sep 2008
- Karori Baptist Church
- The other day I came across the following adaption of the Apostles Creed. The original creed is a reminder of what it is we believe - the basis of our security and the hope we have for the future. This creed, a little tongue in cheek, does the same - it states what many of us would prefer not to admit - that our basis for security and hope has much more to do with what we can buy and store away. Perhaps like me, you too struggle with the insidious way in which those things I bought have somehow now come to own me and have a far greater influence over the decisions I make, than I like to admit. This week may we find the courage and the strength to find again a far greater creed to live to. I believe in my income and standard of living, maker of pleasure on earth. And in things-I-own and Things-I-want-to-get, which are conceived by desire for possessions born of a regular paycheck, suffered under monthly payments, then glorified, cherished and admired. They descend in their value, but on a future day I’ll acquire some more ascending in my status, ’til I sit in comfortable retirement, from whence I shall come to enjoy them all without end. I believe in my home or apartment, my comfortable automobile, my vacation with pay, my insurance for life the satisfaction of my wants and a bank account ever increasing. Amen. (Attributed to R.Vallet, Congregations at the Crossroads.)

This Wellingtonista newsitem has 10 comments.
- ‘The should've got Kate Winslett to come and pee on the fire.’
- ‘I am delighted to say St Peters did have sprinklers installed and because of that the fire was contained although there was a lot of water damage. Still, better that than a destroyed building. And I would recommend every building have sprinklers.’
- ‘Meant to say excellent title, btw’
