    • Adopt-A-Seats
      • We're pleased to announce the first Adopt-A-Seat recipients - Ray and Julie Malcolm, from Sydney. The couple flew over to Wellington especially to receive their certificates and see their name plaques proudly displayed above their chosen seats. They also purchased two seats in Everlasting Memory of their Beloved Father Stanley and Nephew Nathan. Read more on the Adopt-A-Seat page. Tags: adopt a seat

    • News Update
      • Whilst things have been quiet over the past few months we have been working behind the scenes. We are pleased to advise that our Adopt-A-Seat scheme is taking off and we have so far adopted out five; four silvers and a bronze. We will be producing the plaques shortly and will post photos once they have been fitted on the train. Mike has been negotiating with Kiwirail for the acquisition of rail stock. Thanks to the generosity of Kiwirail we can advise that they have offered us a total of $10 000 worth. This is a significant gesture on their part given the amount of money they invested in the move and we thank them for this further support. We are planning to officially acknowledge the contributions made by others during spring, we will keep you posted through this page and the website. RIRHT member Steve Porter has provided a maintenance report for the Cyclops 3 car set; it is a requirement of holding a rail operating licence that these reports be completed, at present our stock falls under the RIRHT licence until we have obtained our own. The main issue for Cyclops at present is making sure that all handbrakes are operational; whilst there are sufficient brakes working at present we need to ensure that they all do. Eventually we will be doing our own maintenance reports, completing the necessary work and signing them off when completed. Before we can do so we need to have people authorised to do them and / or supervise those doing the work. Mike and Rob have started to undertake the necessary training for this. We are initially training as shunters and, having now completed the theory part of the process, will be assessed on our understanding of the required signals and our ability to convey them to the shunting driver. We will also be getting an understanding of the reports and where necessary working alongside those who prepare them before finally being trained to drive Tr189 and therefore move our own stock around the site. Other members will be given the opportunity to also undertake the training however it will only be considered once they have shown an ongoing commitment to participation in other activities required onsite at Maymorn.

    • Cyclops open to public
      • RIRHT are officially commissioning Tr189 on 22nd June, and we are making Cyclops open to the public as well. We have built a set of steps that will provide safe access for the public into one of the carriages. New members are welcome, so come along and have a look around our yard. • Cyclops at Maymorn
      • We're pleased to announce that the Cyclops EMU is now at Maymorn.  We're in the process of tidying up the site and storing the spare parts. Visit the Rimutaka Incline Railway website to view the story and photos of the Cyclops' journey into preservation at Maymorn.

    • Cyclops moves to Maymorn
      • Great news! We can now confirm that Cyclops will be moved to Maymorn on Sunday 21st of April. The line will be slewed across to the RIRHT line after the first northbound passenger service goes through and will be moved back before the afternoon service comes back through.   We will be allowing spectators on site, planning for managing this is currently under way. There will of course be plenty of opportunity to see the train as it is towed north from Woburn. Please note that unfortunately there will not be any opportunity for people to travel on Cyclops during the move. Tags: cyclopsmaymornmove

    • English Electrics Secured
      • 23 January 2013 The Board of Wellington Heritage Multiple Unit Preservation Trust are pleased to announce that they have successfully secured English Electric multiple unit vehicles DM556, D2130 and D2411 for preservation. These vehicles spent their last years in revenue service as the easily recognised "Cyclops" set and were most often seen operating from Wellington station to either Melling or Taita. Following many months of negotiation with the unit's current owner, Greater Wellington Regional Council, our success was announced in their press release earlier this morning. It is our intention to move the units to our base at the premises of the Rimutaka Incline Rail Heritage Trust in Maymorn around the end of February. We are currently working with Kiwirail, GWRC and RIRHT to prepare the train for movement to the site and continue development of the siding it will be stored on. The train is in very good repair, having been withdrawn from service in operational condition, and our first priority is to make it secure. Long term we intend to return the train to mainline operation, in the meantime we will be working towards to the construction of suitable accommodation and maintaining the unit in a condition in which it can be displayed to the public. For us to achieve our goal of returning the train to service we would like to increase our membership. There are many different ways that people can help the Trust, from assisting at the site to promotion at shows. Those wishing to do so can log on to our website for further information and membership subscription details at: cyclopsemu.drupalgardens.com Donations can be made direct to our bank account: Kiwibank 389014 0364519 00 WHMUPT would like to acknowledge the huge amount of support that we have received from Councillors and officers at GWRC in out attempts to secure Cyclops for future generations to enjoy. We would also like to thank RIRHT for their assistance so far including bringing some of their own projects forward in order to make it possible to get our train on site. WHMUPT is a brand new group in the rail heritage world and the level of support, advice and assistance from them has been invaluable. Our own project would have been made even harder without them and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them for many years to come. Cyclops will be one of three English Electric sets to be preserved by a rail heritage operator. One has already returned to its home at Ferrymead, to start its retirement for the second time. Phoenix, the third red "celebrity" set has been secured by the National Railway Museum in Christchurch; we look forward to working with these organisations in the future. A number of other vehicles have been secured by private owners, as reported in GWRC's release today.
