    • 2020 Programme
      • The year is now well underway and we are very excited to be able to announce our programme for 2020! Director Liz Alpine will kick the year off in April with Louise Proudfoot’s “Desperate Huttwives“. This fast paced comedy, set in a quiet Hutt Valley cul-de-sac, throws us through a ranch slider and into a dizzying romp of neighbourhood barbeque drama as lonely housewife Lisa’s addiction to bourbon and coke and streaming American soap operas leads her down a path of destruction. Following along in late July we then have “Sex, Drugs & Rick ‘n’ Noel” by David Tristram and directed by Claire Fleming. It is the story of Richard Branson. No not the Richard Branson – Sir Richard Branson – entrepreneurial, iconic, philanthropic multi-millionaire boss of the Virgin Corporation. No, this is the story of Richard Branson – redundant foundry worker from the Black Country – whose wife has just left him for another woman. In a desperate attempt to regain his self esteem, Richard applies to do a history course at Birmingham University. There he meets Noel, another ‘mature’ student with a whole different outlook on life. Together – well, together they learn more than either could have imagined possible. About life. About women. About themselves. Not too much about history, though. Finally in November, Gennie Barton will be directing “The Motor Camp” by Dave Armstrong based on a story by Danny Mulheron. Two couples, two caravans, two teenagers arrive at a motor camp and have to park next to each other. As both families try to enjoy their holiday and keep their hormonal teenagers apart, a hilarious series of events unfolds. The Motor Camp is a glorious celebration of our annual Kiwi camping rituals. As always we’ll bring you more information about each of our shows closer to the time. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of summer & prepare yourself for another year’s worth of great entertainment! • US Comedian Rex Havens @ Kapiti Playhouse
      • Rex Havens is a college professor who gave up academic life to become a comedian – and what a hugely successful career change it’s been! Thru a mutual friend who introduced Tricia and Stewart of the Stetson Group to Rex, he is now going to perform one exclusive show called “WOMEN & CHILDREN FIRST!” at Kapiti Playhouse Theatre on the 6th of March. It’s an uproariously hilarious, honest and frenzied tribute to men and women everywhere. As Rex says “Leave your ego at the door, have a seat, and laugh out loud at what silly, silly creatures humans can be.” And here’s one of many reviews… “Thank you for a wonderful performance! It is so refreshing to listen to a comedian who doesn’t use foul language and still gets huge laughs. You are truly a great performer! Motorola, Inc. Tickets can be purchased through Eventfinda.co.nz and at Coastlands. The post US Comedian Rex Havens @ Kapiti Playhouse appeared first on Kapiti Playhouse Inc..

    • Blind Eye Review
      • Blind Eye, by April Phillips and directed by Teresa Sullivan – Review by Andrew London. Kapiti theatre-goers are certainly spoilt for choice at the moment. Coasters production of Menopause The musical is a joyous and accessible frolic guaranteed to raise a smile, but if your taste runs to something more dramatic and intellectually substantial, get along to ‘Blind Eye’ at the Kapiti Playhouse. Wellington playwright April Philips has had a string of successful plays produced all over New Zealand and abroad. Many readers will be familiar with ‘Stiff’, ‘Death and Taxes’, ‘Bonking James Bond’ or ‘Snip’; but, with the exception of the slightly edgier ‘Motel’ (also staged at the Playhouse a year or two ago), all fall solidly into the comedy basket. ‘Blind Eye’ is something of a departure, and leads the audience down some particularly dark societal alleyways, forcing us to ponder on our most basic concepts of right and wrong. For most of us, these matters are generally black and white; but as Patrick, the young policeman in the show, points out, ‘It’s the grey that keeps you up at night’. The production is sparse, but convincing variation of setting is provided by imaginative direction from Teresa Sullivan and evocative lighting by Peter Fleming and the technical crew. With a cast of only four, attention can focus more intently than usual on the dialogue, which must therefore be delivered snappily and crisply. Alistair Smith and Dominique Ware, as policeman and district nurse, achieve this admirably, drawing the audience into their relationship by degree throughout the show. Special mention must be made of Sullivan’s using the song ‘Say Something’ as an accompaniment to the young couple’s dialogue; their lines synchronised perfectly with pauses in the song’s vocals. John Govier and Rachel Neilson portray elderly couple Wally and Vera with great sensitivity. These are demanding roles involving lengthy scenes of great emotional rawness and both excel, drawing the audience into their world of tenderness and devotion, their virtual ‘holidays’ and, ultimately, their pasted-over past. Blind Eye is a provocative work, illustrating once again that writers who tend naturally towards the comic can often be relied on to explore society’s darker side with great insight. This is an outstanding play from one of New Zealand’s greatest and most prolific playwrights, and to see it performed so well in our local theatre is a privilege. Blind Eye is on at Kapiti Playhouse from November 21 to December 1. Find out more. The post Blind Eye Review appeared first on Kapiti Playhouse Inc..

    • Heaven Help Us! – The Review
      • Local musician Andrew London attended opening night of Heaven Help Us! and was kind enough to provide us this review of the show. Heaven is full, St Peter is on leave and the Cherubs, who deliver the mail, are on strike. This scenario was obviously crying out for every pun and afterlife-themed one-liner that writer Tim Hambleton could throw at it, and rest assured he left nothing in the tank. The jokes go by so fast it’s probably worth seeing this twice to pick up what you missed the first time. The complexity of the plot is not such that an Oscar Wilde or a Noel Coward would envy; but it is rollicking good fun and does provide an admirable framework on which to hang an anthology of gags and some colourful characters. Director Mark Harris has coaxed the essence out of each of the six, helped significantly by excellent casting. Claire Fleming is assured and comfortable as busybody waiting-room receptionist Angela Fraser, who is filling in for St Peter. Bruce Weir is equally engaging as her first ‘client’ of the day, goody-two-shoes Charles Little. David Butterfield lucked in big time by being cast as macho deer hunter Trevor Brown, and relishes the role, delivering some of the best lines in the show: ‘Don’t You believe in God then?’ – ‘No, I’m an anaesthetist’. Kimberley Butterfield shines as nasty corporate ladder-climbing CEO Simone; evoking Meryl Streep in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ but with more outright sarcasm and malevolence. We can’t wait to see her get her comeuppance. Grace Wynne-Evans portrays Gothic teenager Natasha Hollows to an utterly convincing tee, rounding out an eclectic gang of new arrivals surprised to find themselves in Heaven’s waiting room rather than the ‘other place. The show is stolen, however, by the arrival off the bench (half way through the second half in standard Kiwi tradition) of Nancy McLean, playing mischievous old battle-axe Dorothy Simpson. Nancy’s ‘possum in the headlights’ entry and her dry comic timing are the perfect late-game pick-me-up, carrying the show through with lively pace to an ‘oh is it over already?’ finale. Award for attention to detail? Perhaps the ‘Repenthouse’ magazine in the waiting room. And if I seem to be giving away too many of the punch-lines – don’t worry, there’s plenty more where these came from in ‘Heaven Help Us!’. Written by Dunedin’s Tim Hambleton, this is a gentle comedy, set in Heaven’s waiting room, that pokes fun at the afterlife. There’s trouble in Paradise. Heaven may be eternal, but it’s not infinite. In fact, it’s as full as a very full thing. Potential entrants have to hang around in the Waiting Room until a place opens up when someone breaks the rules and gets deported to The Other Place. With St Peter off his game, the Waiting Room is being managed by Angela, whose recent choices have been a little less than inspired, and Simone, God’s ambitious CEO, wants her head. The latest batch appear to be a real disaster but Angela has a plan to redeem herself. AUDITIONS Heaven Help Us will be a fun-filled production to be involved with. • New Zealand’s own, New York based B3 organ powerhouse, vocalist, composer and band leader Adrienne Fenemor is unleashing her brand new album Mo’ Puddin’ in NZ this month, including a performance at Kapiti Playhouse in Paraparaumu. Born in New Zealand into a musical family, Adrienne acquired her first organ in 2003 when she imported a Hammond C3 from Canada and with no jazz organ players in NZ, she taught herself to play by copying recordings by Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Groove Holmes and Jack McDuff. After performing in clubs and at festivals throughout New Zealand and Australia, Adrienne moved to the USA in 2008. Adrienne is a singer pianist extraordinaire, with 9 cruise ship contracts under her belt as well as performances in top New York hotels including the Waldorf Astoria, the Russian Tea Rooms and the Hilton. Audiences world-wide agree Adrienne is a fantastic entertainer with CDs released on several record labels in Asia, New Zealand and the USA. Since its release in April, Mo’ Puddin’ has quickly made its way up to the number 4 position in the CMJ Jazz Charts USA. Recorded in NYC with master musicians Peter Bernstein and Willie Jones III, this album is an original spin on the rich tradition of the B3, guitar, drums instrumentation. The tracks on Mo’ Puddin’ have been carefully crafted and feature three B3 classic covers and 6 original compositions written by Adrienne, each with its own flavour, audacity and infectious groove. For her performance at Kapiti Playhouse, Adrienne will be sharing the stage with amazing musicians, New York based New Zealander Mark Lockett on drums, and Wellington guitarist Noel Clayton.
