    • Q&A with Adam 'Blue' Page...
      • This December 9, our favourite South Australian-turned-Wellingtonian Adam Page collaborates with the exceptional Stroma New Music Ensemble for a night of blues-inspired works. Adam's multi-instrument and looping experience mark him as one of the most creative musicians working in Wellington, and Stroma is New Zealand’s largest and most flexible chamber ensemble, comprising mostly players from the NZSO.

    • Dave Armstrong on growing up...
      • One of New Zealand's finest dramatic and comedic storytellers, Dave Armstrong has written for stage, screen and print. We put it to Dave that his new play with Capital E: National Theatre for Children, Magnolia Street (25 & 28 July at Downstage) - was the latest example - following the likes of Niu Sila, Bro' Town and Seven Periods With Mr. Gormsby - of his work exploring the experience of growing up. Here's what he had to say about those days when your neighbourhood is your world and anything is possible...

    • Grant Tilly 1937-2012
      • We were saddened to learn today of the passing of Grant Tilly. Our thoughts and condolences are with Grant’s family and friends. He will be missed by all of us in the industry, and all who have enjoyed his work throughout the last 50 years or more. From stage to screen Grant became one of this country’s most beloved actors. Grant was a part of Downstage from its very earliest years, making his first appearance in 1966 in show whose title alone was so controversial The Dominion newspaper refused to publish it. You’ll Come to Love Your Sperm Test went on to play to more than 5000 Wellingtonians.

    • On the passing of Ben Hana
      • On 15 Jan our Courtenay Pl neighbour Ben Hana, more commonly known as Blanket Man or Brother, passed away at Wellington Hospital. In the days since an impromptu ‘shrine’ has appeared on the wall of the ANZ building where Ben was most commonly seen over the last few years. The shrine, like Ben, is destined to become controversial. Simultaneously creative and destructive, as it spreads over the faux-grecian façade of the bank questions and conflicts will arise as to whether it should be left alone, or washed clean. A fitting tribute, and one that would’ve no doubt amused the man himself.

    • Midnight in Paris - Movie Night fundraiser
      • The Downstage Theatre Society was the group who first put Downstage on its feet back in 1964, and they've stood alongside us ever since. Next Monday 10 Oct they are holding a special advance fundraiser screening of Woody Allen's new film Midnight in Paris at the Penthouse Cinema in Brooklyn. With an ensemble cast including Owen Wilson, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody and Marion Cotillard, this is Allen at his best, funny, insightful and with a touch of magic at work, as he explores his abiding themes of love and neuroses in the City of Light.

    • Voices of support
      • We've been heartened and humbled by the messages of support and goodwill we've received over the last week. As we set to work over the next few months revitalising and strengthening our theatre ahead of 2012, knowing our community is behind us is vital. We have a number of events and initiatives planned where those who have asked how you can help will be able to make a real difference. In the meantime, we'd like to share some of the kind words we've received.

    • Our Brand New Name!
      • No - we haven't changed the name of the theatre! Our first floor bar has had a makeover thanks to Massey University design student Brit O’Hara and mentor Debra DeLorenzo, with help of generous donations from our supporters, and funds raised from last year's Flourish scarf auction. After much thought, discussion and suggestions it has been officially christened: The ½.

      • We believe in making our work accessible to our community. Last year we received funding to purchase a set of telemagnetic receivers to support users of digital hearing aids in accessing the hearing loop audio in the theatre. This June we’re going one step further. With the help of the Wellington City Council we have scheduled a sign language-interpreted performance of Roger Hall’s C’mon Black!.
