So this little chair waits… what’s going in there? Nine beautiful, sexy Formula One cars - along with a whole lot of other amazing objects and stories.

Black Nightshade - it’s (nearly) everywhere
- 14 Apr 2009
- Te Papa's blog
- Black nightshade has been in the news recently, after its berries turned up masquerading as peas in packs of frozen vegetables. Without wanting to be seen to cast aspersions on your aptitude for gardening, there is a good chance black nightshade is in your garden. Black nightshade is a small plant (less than 75 cm tall) that is [...]

- ‘Hi Grant, Short answer: I don’t know, sorry. I am not aware of similar reports of black nightshade sap being problematic. And, with my previous weedy garden, I did pull out numerous black nightshade plants without ill effect, but I don’t remember getting the sap on my skin. However, the sap of some plant species can be poisonous/toxic via skin contact, and ***people do differ in their reactions***. Although a lot of people report happily consuming black nightshade, it is I think worth pointing out that the NZ Poisons Centre list it amongst their top 10 poisonous plants; for more, see: http://www.poisons.co.nz/fact.php?f=12&c=22 I hope you’re feeling better by now. Leon ’
- ‘By the way, ref one of the earlier comments, Woody Nightshade is an alternative common name for Bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara) in the UK. ’
- ‘Hi, interested to read the comments above. Very strange experience today – tried to pull up a particularly vigorous specimen of presumably black nightshade growing in our compost bin. As I pulled I stripped the outer stem, leaving green juice over my hands. Thinking nothing of it, I carried on with my chores. Ten minutes or so later, I came over very peculiar – sweating, dizziness, disorientation, etc. I had to sit down before I fell down. Several hour later symptoms still persist but milder. Is this a coincidence or was it a result of toxicity from the nightshade? Can it enter the body via the skin? Thanks. ’

- ‘I have been writing an essay on McCahon’s work i’ve found his earlier religious aspects to be very ambitious and out going for the time that he did them. Im very proud to no he was a new zealander and he did in a way stand up for those of us that are lost on our beliefs.:) ’
- ‘I have just been writing about this period and the 1948 reviews of McCahon’s work. I found it really intersting that McCahon and Angus were so mutually supportive considering their huge stylistic differences. Comparing their 1947/48 works side by side was an eye opener. ’

Weedy ferns

- Chris Horne of the Wellington Botanical Society recently sent me a fern frond they collected on one of their trips. - ‘Thanks Antony, You’re correct in that CHR specimens of D. filix-mas don’t appear to include any from CMS plots. I will be checking with Landcare for plot records later in the year. ’
- ‘Hi Graeme. I was there in October 2003, establishing CMS (now LUCAS) plots. From memory we were in the Clarence river valley. I suggest you request LUCAS recce data from plots in southern Marlborugh / northern Canterbury, from Hazel Broadbent, Landcare Research, Lincoln Check recces for records of Dryopteris. It would be advisable to physically check which Dryopteris species is at the site yourself as it could have been incorrectly ID’d. I doubt any vouchers were retained by CHR. It was certainly Dryopteris and very numerous. It was located on river gravels within the flood zone. Good luck with the project. ’
- ‘Hi Antony, Which river north of Kaikoura? Under Buddleja, does this mean on very recent river gravels? I am currently collecting records and site information for Dryopteris filix-mas and finding that it is widespread but patchy through the North Canterbury foothills. Often just a single plant but mature plants often have clusters of smaller plants within five meters, suggesting that dispersal is a factor in its current distribution. Otherwise, I have seen it along the Canterbury side of the Lewis Pass Highway, at Murchison, along the Motueka Valley and at Ikamatua. It is reported as well established in Arthurs Pass Village by Hugh Wilson. ’

- ‘Hi Nathan, I understand your concern regarding the acrylic. Each hole was sanded by hand and flamed, then we checked each one before putting the lid back on the tank. By time we had to put the lid on and bolt it down, the majority of the liquid had come up to ambient temperature. Even so, I was still wary of the danger of the acrylic stressing with the last of the liquid being filled and pressurisation with gas production, so we didn’t do a complete fill, leaving air gaps down either side, and leaving valves open to a spill chamber so that gas and air bubbles exit the tank as they develop. Once we see that gas is no longer being produced, we’ll recycle a percentage of the liquid via gravity feed to remove the bubbles from the lid and do a final fill. We hope to be able to do that this Wednesday 1st. You should come on down and check it all out! ’
- ‘Awsome, glad to hear that it went well, the sanding of the acrylic tank concerns me, i work with acrylic quite a bit, building custom resivoirs and the like, and seeing sanding come into play i do hope that they inspected after the sanding, to make sure no small cracks or fractures had started, since as a liquid changes tempeture with most acrylics the acrylic can start to stress and fracture. love that you added the wheelchair ramp, and am looking forward to the day i can vacation from Canada and come see your lovely island. ’

In 2005 he was the representative of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), part of the Smithsonian, at the Venice Biennale. You can find info about that, plus a whole lot of other things he has done, on his website http://www.jamesluna.com. I’m sure James would be interested in an invitation to the Edinburgh Festival. Contact details for him and his agent Nola are also on his website. thanks for your comment charlotte ’
- ‘Do you have any news on when James will next be visiting? I have watched his performances on you tube and like the way that he mixes sense of humour with the sense of tradition he so readily evokes. I enjoy his understandings of the human condition. And the way he criticises the stereo-types we all adhere without thinking things through. Has he ever travelled to Europe? I am originally from Edinburgh, in Scotland UK, and I know that there would be a lot of interest if he chose to give a performance, especially around the time of the festival (August). ’
