    • Men's Champ Pairs Final
      • By Allan Galbraith L/R P. Anquetil, S. Scoones, B. Amer (s) and A. Ryan The final of the Men’s Champ Pairs, the Chas Warr Cup, was played this morning in brilliant sunshine, before a small but appreciative audience. The Chas Warr Cup was first played for in the 1970/71 season, when it was won by JBC legend, Todd Anquetil. There was a nice connection with today’s game, which featured Todd’s son, Paul, playing with Steve Scoones against Brady Amer and Adam Ryan. This cup has often been won several times by some of the Club’s most experienced players, however none of today’s players had won the trophy before. Paul and Steve were unable to replicate Todd’s success, with Brady and Adam having a comfortable win.

    • Tuesday Triples Gala (and Melbourne Cup)
      • By Allan Galbraith L/R Ernst, Neil and Trevor The Tuesday Triples Gala, which has for some years has been played on Melbourne Cup Day, comprised thirteen teams from Johnsonville, Plimmerton, Khandallah and Titahi Bay. After two of the three rounds, four teams had two wins and one (because of a bye) already had three. At the end of play three teams had three wins. The winners, Johnsonville’s Neil Hargreaves, Trevor Ross and Ernst Schuch, was decided on ends won.

    • Bowls Specialists Centre Mixed 2-4-2 Pairs
      • By Allan Galbraith   L/R Dale, Robbie, Nichole and BradyThe first big Centre event of the season, Bowls Specialists Mixed Pairs, was played over the three days of Labour Weekend. Johnsonville was headquarters and all post-section play was at JBC. A number of JBC teams did well, with Dale Rayner and Brady Amer battling their way to a final against Commonwealth Games medallist, Nicole Toomey, and last season’s Easter 2-4-2 winner, Robbie Bird (Composite). Unfortunately, Dale and Brady couldn’t match the consistency of Nicole and Robbie in the final. Of the other JBC teams that qualified for the knockout rounds, Ian Franklin and Alison Colgate, and Paula Meredith and Isi Taito reached the last 16.

    • Twilight 2-4-2
      • By Allan Galbraith It was “wrap up warm” for the start of JBC’s Tuesday evening Twilight 2-4-2 Pairs last night. This early season event will run for seven weeks with a format of two five-end sets, and a one end tiebreaker if necessary. There is range of experience among the ten teams taking part, and it’s particularly pleasing to have five of Wellington’s Under 18 reps involved. JBC is grateful for the sponsorship of Bowls New Zealand and Lychgate Funerals for this event.

    • Men's Graded Fours
      • By Allan Galbraith The format for the five teams playing the Men’s Graded Fours on Saturday was four rounds of ten ends. Byes caused by the uneven number of teams counted as a win. After two rounds, Bruce Henderson’s four, with two played wins and a bye to come, already looked like possible winners, however they were beaten in a tight third game by the team skipped by Allan Brider. Other results meant that all four games needed to be played to find the winner.   At the end of play three teams each had three wins (including byes) and it took a countback of ends and differentials to confirm the winning team as Bruce Henderson (s), Isi Taito (3), Kevin McAlister (2) and Neil Hargreaves (lead). This is the same team that won the event last season, except that Kevin replaced Andrew Barclay.

    • Symes Family Trophy & Eric Wallis Tankard
      • Bt Allan Galbraith Given the weather around the country and how wet it has been around here, we had a lucky break yesterday to allow our first event of the season to be played – The Symes Family Trophy, donated by one of NZ’s bowls legends, Maurice Symes, back in 1995. As always, the first game saw the winning of the Eric Wallis Tankard for the first toucher of the season. Read More ...

    • Waikanae Winter Cup
      • The Waikanae Winter Cup was held on the 13th and 14th of August. Pictured are past and present Johnsonville members from the event. Brady Amer’s team with Lil George, Adam Ryan and Cynthia Evans made it to third equal in the Cup. Brent Stubbins team with Kay Martin, Dave Carr and Lui Hare made the top ten The second division plate was won by Gareth Evans, Keith Alexander, Lynette Campbell and Brent Shugg, beating past Johnsonville member Bob Liddall’s team in the final.

    • Passing of Anne Zouch
      • It is with regret that we report the recent death of former JBC member, Anne Zouch. Anne’s funeral service will be held at the Church of Ss Peter and Paul, Dr Taylor Terrace, Johnsonville at 11am on Thursday 18 August.

    • The Gavin Muir Memorial Gala
      • By Allan Galbaith JBC players usually do very well at winter events on the Kapiti Coast. Here’s the latest. Lui Hare, Brent Stubbins and Rob Ashton have just won the inaugural Gavin Muir Memorial Triples on a fabulous winter day at Raumati Bowling Club. Twenty-four teams took part in this event, with Johnsonville winning all four of their games – taking out both the competition on their green and the overall winner’s trophy. As always, Raumati organised a brilliant tournament, at which everyone enjoyed a great day of bowls and company. Photo (by Anne Burrage): Brent, Lui and Rob

    • Passing of Life Member
      • We are sad to record the death, in her 101st year, of Life Member, Dot Ivamy. Dot joined the Club in 1965, with her good friend and neighbour Rose Pullan. She participated fully in all aspects of the club and was President of the Women’s Club from 1979 to 1981. Her great contribution to club activities was later acknowledge with Life Membership. This photo of Dot (left) and her great friend, Rose Pullan, was supplied by Dot’s daughter, Jill McKie. A private cremation has taken place.

    • 2021-22 Men’s Champ Fours
      • By Allan Galbraith The final of the Men’s Champ Fours were played on Saturday afternoon. As would be expected, some great bowls were played in close-to-perfect conditions. The game saw Gareth Evan’s Four, with Steve Scoones, Terry Dean and Dave Carr, take on Bruce Henderson (s), Grant Wakefield, Isi Taito and Rob Veale. The turning point of this game was the 11th end. At that point Gareth’s team was 7-10 down but they then held on to the mat for the remainder of the game, except for one end, to win 21-11. Gareth recorded his 3rd club title. In Gareth’s four, Terry Dean, a 1st year bowler, replaced Bruce Miller, who was unable to play because of injury.

    • 2021-22 Men’s Champ Triples
      • By Allan Galbraith The final of the Men’s Champ Triples  were played on Saturday afternoon. As would be expected, some great bowls were played in close-to-perfect conditions.   Rob Ashton (s) with Phil Todd and Wayne Coleman, met Nairn MacGibbon (s), Naki Nehemia and Brent Shugg. The game was more or less level pegging until the 15th, of the 18 ends, when Rob’s shot sat out a bowl to score a four, giving Rob’s team a handy lead to finish the game 19-9.   This was Rob’s 19th Triples title at JBC; Phil’s 1st club title since joining JBC, and Wayne’s 3rd;

    • 2021-22 Women’s Champ Singles
      • By Allan Galbraith The final games of the Women’s Champ Singles were played yesterday, resulting in a final between Kaaren Guilford and Gill Oliver. After a game, played in good spirit but tightly fought till the end, Kaaren held on to win 21-18.

    • 2021-22 Taranaki Pairs Winners
      • By Bowls Taranaki Johnsonville’s Naki Nehemia (left) and Nairn MacGibbon (right) held off a mid-game come back from Allan Rickard and Hugh Andrews (Bannockburn) too win the pairs event at Paritutu yesterday. The men from the Capital took out the contest 24-11, having led 10-2 after nine ends. But Rickard and Andrews took two shots on each of the next two ends and on the 13th claimed a four. After 15 ends, Nehemia and MacGibbon led just 12-11. But consecutive threes, two singles and a four, inflated the final margin. In the semifinals, Rickard and Andrews scored two shots on each of the last two ends to pip Kerry Walsh and Ian Franklin (Johnsonville) 17-16. Nehemia and MacGibbon also withstood a fightback in the their semi, before prevailing 20-17 over Ted Morris and David Nightingale (Glendowie).

    • 2021-22 Christmas Gala
      • By Allan Galbraith A great day was had by all at the JBC Christmas Gala on Sunday. The “best dressed” team was The Stars – Dale Rayner, Kaaren Guilford, Brent Shugg and Mary-Ann Wilson. Full marks to them for staying in those costumes all day. Winner of the bowls competitions were the “No Names” team - Wayne Coleman, Christine Hyett, Travis Anquetil and Adam Ryan.

    • 2021-22 Lychgate Twilight Pairs.
      • By Brady Amer On Friday saw the presentation for Johnsonville's Lychgate Twilight Pairs.   An event won by Lil George and Adam Ryan (pictured).   Thanks to Lychgate for sponsoring the event and to all the players who made this event possible!

    • Wednesday Afternooners
      • By Allan Galbraith We usually post photos of competition winners and the like, and our members who play on Wednesday afternoons and in galas don’t get much attention. Such players are still the backbone of bowls – so here are some of our “Wednesday Afternooners”, gathered today for a end of year afternoon tea.

    • 2021-22 Centre Singles
      • By Allan Galbraith Well done by several JBC players in the Central Open Singles over last weekend – but unfortunately no podium finishes. Of our men, Brent Stubbins reached the quarter finals, where he was knocked out by the eventual winner, Finbar McGuigan (Stokes Valley). Dave Carr and Frankie made it to the last 16, where Frankie also lost to Finbar and Dave to Sar Alefosio (Naenae). Of our women, Dale again went well, reaching the semi-final, where she lost to Cath Thomson (Plimmerton). Kaaren and June Wairau both reached the last 16. We’ll also lay some claim to Pam Mulford (in her Plimmerton colours) who also reached the semi-final before losing to the eventual winner, Clare Hendra (Silverstream).

    • 2021-22 Foxplan Premier Bowls3Five
      • By Allan Galbraith Johnsonville entered three teams in this event, which was run on two green at Wilton yesterday. A total of 32 teams from the Bowls Wellington area took part. The JBC teams were:   1. Dale Rayner, Ross Gillett and Ian Franklin (reserve Bruce Miller) 2. Logan and Brady Amer and Gill Oliver (reserve Gary Milicich) 3. Rob Ashton, Kaaren Guilford and Wayne Coleman (reserve Isi Taito) The team Manager was Dennis Witt.   There were three qualifying games in the morning, followed by three knockout games to find the winner. After the morning’s play JBC’s teams 1 and 3 went through to the knockout rounds.   Rob, Kaaren and Wayne lost the first knockout game to the eventual winners, Naenae B (Sar Alefosio, Alieta Vulu and Anne Gately). Meanwhile Dale and her team beat Wilton and the Naenae A team to reach the final. The format for this event was set play and, as you might expect, the final went to a one-end tie-breaker. Also, as you might expect, the result hung on the skips’ final bowls. Johnsonville looked to be in a sound position at that point, only to have Sar play a seemingly impossible shot to change the head entirely, leaving Dale with no real chance of recovering with her last.

    • 2021-22 Centre Fours
      • By Allan Galbraith Centre Fours – last day Johnsonville went into the last day of the Centre Fours with three women’s teams in the semi-finals and three men’s in the quarters. On the women’s side, Kaaren’s Four met Paula’s on one side of the draw and, on the other, the four skipped by June Wairau met the Naenae four skipped by Lisa White. There were hopes for an all-Johnsonville final. Kaaren made it through over Paula, however on the other side of the draw, the Naenae team knocked that on the head by beating June. In the final, Naenae (Lisa White, Rozanna Muriwai, Anne Gately and Kennie Critchlow) beat Kaaren, Pam Mulford, Alison Colgate and Fiona Alexander 17-13.   Of the men’s teams, the fours skipped by Brendon Gibson (Ross Gillett, Jason Anquetil, Travis Anquetil); and Nairn McGibbon (Naki Nehemia, Keith Alexander and Brent Shugg), made it through to the semi-finals. At that point both our teams lost to Stokes Valley fours, Brendon to Gary Lawson and Nairn to Seamus Curtin. The men’s event was won by Gary Lawson, Mike Carroll, Steve Brien and John Brien.                                                                                              So – no silverware for Johnsonville but an excellent effort all round.

    • 21-22 Centre Pairs
      • By Allan Galbraith Another great turn out from both the men and women for the centre pairs.                 In the quarter-finals of the men’s event Wayne Coleman and Dave Carr met Ken Brown and Adrian Cronin and Rob Ashton and Phil Todd played Lance Pascoe and Seamus Curtin (Stokes Valley). The outcome of that round was that Wayne and Dave beat Ken and Adrian; and Rob and Phil were knocked out by the Stokes Valley pair. In the semi-finals, Wayne and Dave had a reasonably comfortable win against Caleb Hope and John Brien (Stokes Valley) – taking them to a final against, previous winners, Sar Alefosio & Robbie Yemm (Naenae). At that point the JBC team’s good run ended, as Sar and Robbie proved too strong.   On the women’s side, in a tight contest until the last bowl – but played in great spirits, Lui Hare and Hilda Abraham lost to June Wairua and Lil George. June and Lil went on to defeat Christine Robson & Sheryl Young (Petone Central) in the final. Notably for in-form Lil – this is her first Centre title.

    • Women’s Champ 1-5 Year Singles 2021-22
      • By Allan Galbraith With just two entries this season, the Women’s Champ 1-5 Year Singles was run as a best of three games this morning, with Fiona Alexander meeting Lynette Campbell. In the first game, Lynette had a slow start but came back well to challenge Fiona later in the game, finally losing 17-21. Fiona had a firm grip of the second game from the beginning, winning it (therefore the final) 21-9. Well done to Fiona and Lynette for putting their hands up for this event and therefore keeping it alive for junior players. Photo: Lynette and Fiona

    • Green Working Bee
      • By Allan Galbraith There was an excellent turnout of close to 20 workers on Saturday morning to shift recently delivered sand from the top car park to the bottom green, and to screed the green for levelling ahead of the full competitive season.   Thanks to the good number of workers, under the expert guidance of Brendon, this part of the green’s preparation was done in one morning.   Thanks to Brent Stubbins for the photo.

    • Women’s Graded Event 2021-22
      • By Allan Galbraith Usually a graded fours event, this competition was played today with five triples and one fours team over three rounds of 14 ends. Teams were drawn and graded from the entries on the board. The games were played in cool and changeable wind conditions, with scrim down, making accurate bowls difficult. After two rounds, there were two teams with two wins – Lui Hare, Janet Nehemia and Christine Hyett; and June Wairau, Kay Martin and Gill Oliver.   Both these teams won their third games with Lui, Janet and Christine winning on their better differential.

    • Men's Graded Fours 2021-22
      • By Allan Galbraith Today, ten teams played the Men’s Graded Fours for the McLauchlin and O’More Memorial Trophy, first played for in the 1972/73 season, although the Graded Fours date back further than that. Aided by a good influx of new players, this was the healthiest number of teams in this event for some years. The competition was played over four rounds of ten ends.   After two rounds, teams skipped by Bruce Henderson, Brent Stubbins, and Wayne Coleman each had two wins but after the third round only Bruce’s team remained unbeaten – and went on to win with a clean sweep of four wins. The team was Bruce Henderson (s), Isi Taito (3), Neil Hargreaves (2) and Andrew Barclay (L). Second placed, was the team skipped by Logan Amer.

    • Peter Keen Memorial Trophy 2021-22
      • By Allan Galbraith Eight teams competed for the Peter Keen Trophy today – a cool but beautifully sunny Saturday.   After three rounds of ten ends, the winners were Kay Martin’s team of Keith Alexander, Joss Mouat (new haircut) and Terry Dean (new bowler). Good to see Terry in a winning team so early in his bowls experience - and some other new faces also.   Runners up were Dick Williams, Pearl Archer, Bill Mouat and Craig Hepetema.     Photo: Keith, Kay, Joss and Terry
